  • Do gender norms travel within corporations? : The impact of foreign subsidiaries on the home country’s gender wage gap
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Applied Economics Letters. - : Routledge. - 1350-4851 .- 1466-4291. ; 31:17, s. 1661-1665
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this note we study how the share of workers in a corporation located in a high gender wage gap country impacts the wage gap in their home country operations. Our findings support the hypothesis that firms with strong intra-firm linkages to a high gender wage gap country also display a relatively large gender wage gap at home.

  • Learning to Use Trade Preferences : A Firm and Transaction Level Analysis of the EU-South Korea FTA
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: World Trade Review. - : Cambridge University Press. - 1474-7456 .- 1475-3138. ; 23:2, s. 117-144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines imports by Swedish firms and the utilization of the tariff preferences offered by the EU-South Korea Free Trade Agreement. To benefit from tariff preferences, the importer must make a formal request to use the preferences and also document the origin of the imported products (with a certificate of origin provided by the foreign exporter). This may be costly, and some importers choose to pay import tariffs even when tariff preferences are available. Hence, the preferences are not fully utilized. Using a detailed firm-transaction level data set on Swedish imports from South Korea, we analyse the determinants of preference utilization and how firms learn to use preferences. The results show that preference utilization is strongly correlated with potential duty savings, which depend on the preference margin and the size of the import transaction. From a learning perspective, we find that preference utilization is closely related to the number of import transactions undertaken by the firm, suggesting a learning-by-doing mechanism. The length of time the firm has been involved in importing activities plays a smaller role.

  • Regional Integration and Trade Diversion in Europe
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Integration and Trade. - : Inter-American Development Bank. - 1995-9532. ; :26, s. 205-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper re-examines the relation between regional integration and trade by using the framework suggested by Yeats [1998] to analyze the effects of European integration. We identify the industries that experienced the largest increases in regional trade orientation during three phases of European integration, and examine the simultaneous changes in revealed comparative advantages. Our main conclusion is that there are signs of trade diversion for the earliest phase of European integration (1962-1973), when intra-regional trade increased in industries with weak comparative advantages, but not for later time periods. The main reason is that regional integration has coincided with reductions in external trade barriers, improving market access also for outsiders. At the same time, integration has promoted economic growth and import demand, which has been beneficial for outside producers. We also argue that the static concept of trade diversion is not well suited for analyzing modern integration, which aims to raise the comparative advantage of regional producers by promoting scale economies and competition. If successful, it will reduce the market shares of outsiders, but it does not constitute trade diversion: more efficient outsiders are not replaced by less efficient insiders.

  • Statliga innovationsstöd till små och medelstora företag : har de någon effekt?
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ekonomisk Debatt. - : Nationalekonomiska föreningen. - 0345-2646. ; 44:1, s. 6-19

  • Is China Different? : A Meta Analysis of the Effect of Foreign Direct Investment on Domestic Firms
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chinese Economic and Business Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1476-5284 .- 1476-5292. ; 8:4, s. 353-371
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Empirical evidence suggests that China has benefited from foreign direct investment (FDI). However, an important question that remains unanswered is whether China has benefited more from FDI than other countries in general and other transition and developing countries in particular. This paper investigates this issue by performing a Meta-analysis on a sample of 67 country-specific studies yielding 125 observations that have gauged the nexus between FDI and measures of income growth. The results show that studies on China report relatively high tvalues and thus indicate that China may have benefited more than other countries from FDI.

  • Is China Different? A Meta-analysis of export-led growth
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 115:2, s. 177-179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We examine whether China has benefited more from exports than other countries. The results show that exports have been more significant for growth in China than in other countries, even when China is compared with other transition economies.

  • Multinationals, cross-border acquisitions and wage dispersion
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Canadian Journal of Economics. - : Wiley. - 0008-4085 .- 1540-5982. ; 44:2, s. 627-650
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multinational firms pay relatively high wages. Less is known about the wage structure within multinational and non-multinational firms. We examine the impact of acquisitions on wage dispersion in Sweden using a large matched employer-employee data set including about 50 percent of the Swedish labor force and with detailed information on job-tasks and education. Foreign acquisitions of both domestic multinationals and local firms increase the wage dispersion by increasing wages for high-skilled employees. The positive impact is concentrated to CEOs and other managers, whereas other groups are either negatively affected or not affected at all. The impact on high-skilled workers' wages seems to be caused by the acquisition rather than by the ownership itself, since changes from foreign to Swedish ownership result in similar increases. Our results are in line with theories stressing ownership changes as opportunities to renegotiate contracts and perform organizational changes.

  • The Dynamics of Offshoring and Institutions
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The B.E. Journals in Economic Analysis & Policy. - De Gruyter : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 2194-6108 .- 1935-1682. ; 15:4, s. 1975-2016
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research has found that weak institutions can hamper investment and alter patterns of trade. However, little is known about the impact of institutional quality on offshoring. This lack of knowledge is surprising, given that offshoring has become an important part of many firms’ internationalization strategies. This study uses detailed firm-level data for the period 1997-2005 to examine the relationship between institutional quality in 113 source countries and offshoring by Swedish firms. The results suggest that weak institutions are negatively related to offshoring in general and to offshoring of R&D- and relationship specificity-intensive inputs in particular. Analysis of learning effects suggests that the impact of weak institutions on offshoring of relationship specificity-intensive inputs vanish when firms return to countries from which they have previous market experience. Our results are robust to various measures of institutional quality.

  • Service offshoring and corruption : Do Firms Escape Corrupt Countries?
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Industry, Competition and Trade. - Springer : Springer. - 1566-1679 .- 1573-7012. ; 15:4, s. 363-381
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze how service offshoring by Swedish firms is affected by corruption in source countries. The results suggest that firms avoid corrupt countries and that corruption reduces the volume of service offshoring. Analyzing firm heterogeneity, we find that large and internationalized firms are the ones that are the most sensitive to corruption. In addition, sensitivity to corruption tends to increase with falling income in source countries. These results suggest that the gains from reduced corruption may be the greatest for poor countries.

  • Economic Growth and Growth Linkages in China 1994 – 2003
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: China Economic Journal. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1753-8963 .- 1753-8971. ; 2:3, s. 257-276
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates to what extent income growth in the Chinese provinces is linked to growth and income levels in neighboring provinces. We find that the rate of income growth in a province is positively related to income and growth in neighboring provinces. However, we find no evidence of such positive interdependence between growth in rich coastal provinces and their immediate inland neighbors. This suggests that there has been little synchronization in economic growth rates between these regions, and/or that the immediate hinterland of the coastal growth centers might have been bypassed as China's manufacturing sector has migrated westward.
