  • Social responsibility in connection with business closures : A study of closures of Ericsson Telecom facilities in Norrköping and Linköping
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Economic and Industrial Democracy. - London : Sage Publications. - 0143-831X .- 1461-7099. ; 31:4, s. 537-555
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present article analyses why and how Ericsson Telecom assumeda greater responsibility than was legally required when it dismissedmore than 23,000 employees in Sweden at the beginning of the21st century. The analysis starts from neoinstitutional theoryand is based on case studies of the company’s closuresin Norrköping and Linköping. The article focuses,in particular, on the interaction between Ericsson, the tradeunions, the County Administrative Board, the County Labour Board, the Public Employment Service, the Swedish Employment SecurityCouncil, the government and the respective municipalities. Itis shown that the greater responsibility taken by Ericsson wasbased on its desire to maintain legitimacy by taking into considerationprevailing societal expectations regarding the company’sbehaviour.

  • Innovative entrepreneurship policy : linking innovation and entrepreneurship in a European context
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Annals of Innovation & Entrepreneurship. - Järfälla : CoAction Publishing. - 2000-7396. ; 1:1, s. 5602-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today it is a well-established fact that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are important for economic growth and renewal. The ‘carrying out of new combinations’ may, however, have less to do with the size of a firm or organization, instead ‘newness’ in the form of innovation and entrepreneurship has again caught the attention of many academics and policymakers. Even so it is argued in this paper that the two areas of innovation policy a d entrepreneurship policy (both relatively recent as distinct policy areas) are seldom integrated and the concept of ‘innovative entrepreneurship policy’ has not yet fully emerged. This paper attempts to make a bridge between and integrate innovation and entrepreneurship policy. The paper presents an overview of innovation and entrepreneurship policies as derivatives of other policy areas, hinting at why it might be problematic to integrate an innovative entrepreneurship policy into existing policy areas. It is argued that public policy promoting innovation and economic growth must also involve instruments promoting entrepreneurship. Since this task is not easily accomplished, the concept of an Innovative entrepreneurship policy is also introduced in the discussion. It is argued that policies in favor of ‘innovative’ entrepreneurship should be considered in the context of a ‘holistic’ entrepreneurship policy framework. For innovative entrepreneurship to be able to fully contribute to economic growth and development it is suggested that its importance will need to be further acknowledged in innovation as well as entrepreneurship policies.

  • Combining industrial buyer and seller strategies for international supply and marketing management
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: European Business Review. - London : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0955-534X .- 1758-7107. ; 22:1, s. 64-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to review international industrial purchasing and marketing literature with a focus on portfolio models, to develop portfolio models for buyers' and sellers' international strategies, and to combine the models so that both the buyer and seller perspectives are dealt with simultaneously. Design/methodology/approach: Literature on international industrial purchasing and marketing is discussed. Dimensions that are important for the buyers' and sellers' strategies are identified. Portfolio models for buyers and sellers are developed and the two perspectives are matched together. Findings: The paper contributes a specification of features that are important for industrial buyers' and sellers' international purchasing and marketing strategies. These dimensions are used to develop a model of supplier relationship management and a marketing management model for supplier strategies. The consequences for the firm's international activities are discussed. A model combining industrial buyers' and sellers' international supply and marketing management strategies is developed. Research limitations/implications: This paper provides a deeper understanding of international exchange processes by combining literature on international industrial purchasing and international marketing. Situations are identified where different areas of theory are applicable. The paper also contributes to the discussion on what should be the conceptual domain of international business. Here, it is argued that international exchange is the product of joint decisions made by two or more actors based in different countries. Earlier academic literature reveals a striking imbalance: while one side of the coin - the exporter side - has been extensively studied, the importer side has largely been neglected. In this paper, it is tried to present a balanced view of both sides. Practical implications: This paper introduces portfolio management models that can be used for both industrial purchasing and marketing management. The paper stresses the importance of finding a fit between the marketing and purchasing strategies within a relationship. If both parties have positioned the relationship in a similar way, there are much greater possibilities for the relationship to create value for both parties. Originality/value: The paper combines international industrial purchasing and international marketing perspectives as few studies have done before. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

  • A Corporate Model of Sustainable Business Practices: An Ethical Perspective
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of World Business. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 1090-9516 .- 1878-5573. ; 45:4, s. 336-345
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers contemporary business practice and its sustainable performance from the view of stakeholders and their perceived value. A company has responsibilities and commitments to many different internal and external stakeholders in the marketplace and society. This view underlines the need for organizations to, not only provide value, but do so in a sustainable and socially responsible manner. A model is developed based on five, separate but interconnected, elements. The model is iterative and acknowledges its elementary state, suggesting further development and refinement in the field of sustainable business practices from an ethical perspective.

  • Narratives of Climate Change and Environment : The facts and values portrayed in two Swedish newspapers' online editions
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Observatorio (OBS*). - : OberCom. - 1646-5954. ; 4:2, s. 167-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study shows what the online editions of Sweden’s two major daily newspapers put on the agenda with regards to climate change and environment. It also illustrates the ideas, values, ideologies and hegemonic ideas entailed within the presented articles’ and news items’ way of narrating. The result demonstrates how the readers are presented not merely with facts concerning climate change, but moreover with general sets of values holding that, for example, Chinese and Russian people are not entirely trustworthy, that Swedish authorities are utterly dependable and that the climate crises shall be solved by means of technology – not through a change in our way of living or through political economical measures.

  • Business Simulation Exercises in Small Business Management Education : Using Principles and Ideas from Action Learning
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Action Learning. - Abingdon, Oxon, UK : Carfax Publishing. - 1476-7333 .- 1476-7341. ; 7:1, s. 3-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent calls to close the rigour-relevance gap in business school education have suggested incorporating principles and ideas from action learning in small business management education. In this paper we discuss how business simulation exercises can be used as a platform to trigger students' learning by providing them with a platform where they can merge theory with practice. We provide theoretical arguments accompanied by illustrations to show how such initiatives can create a more student-centred teaching structure than what is usually practised in contemporary business school education. This may in turn work as a potential bridge between the safe harbour of traditional classroom teaching and the more chaotic and complex world of managerial practice.

  • Interactive (networked) internationalization : the case of Swedish firms
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Marketing. - UK : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0309-0566 .- 1758-7123. ; 45:7-8, s. 1112-1129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to provide deeper insights into the extent to which an independent actor(s) actively collaborates with the internationalizing firm so as to jointly determine the choice of market, the mode of entry and the level of investment committed in the market to be entered and even after the entry (i.e. the ongoing activities). Design/methodology/approach - Against the previous purpose section, a qualitative research approach is selected to guide the exploratory nature of this study. Thus qualitative data are used to build the two case studies because case studies are generally a more appropriate approach when "how" and "why" questions are being posed and when the investigator has little control over events. Findings - Based on two multiple case studies, one major finding of the study shows that independent actors, with their interconnected networks, have played and are still playing a major role in influencing the internationalization processes of each of the two firms in this study. Originality/value - This is an original paper developed based on two case studies which have not been published in any journal before. The paper highlights the role of external independent actors in internationalization, which is not mentioned at all or stressed in the extant literature.

  • Beyond Managing Uncertainty : Insights from Studying Equivocality in the Fuzzy Front-End of Product and Process Innovation Projects
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on engineering management. - New York, N.Y. : IEEE Press. - 0018-9391 .- 1558-0040. ; 58:3, s. 551-563
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research has shown uncertainty reduction to be critical in the fuzzy front end of the innovation process, but little attention has been given to the equally important concept of equivocality, although it is a defining characteristic of many front-end projects. To address this research gap, this paper report the resultsfrom a longitudinal, multiple case study of four large companiesoriented to both product and process innovation. First, our results show that both uncertainty and equivocality is more effectively reduced in successful front-end projects than in unsuccessful ones. Second, the negative consequences of equivocality appear more critical to front-end performance than the consequences following uncertainty. Third, our results show that uncertainty and equivocality are reduced sequentially in successful projects and simultaneously in unsuccessful projects. Finally, uncertainty and equivocality takes longer time to reduce in process innovation projects than in product innovation projects, which is a consequence of the systemic nature of process innovation. Altogether, these findings provide strong implications for managing front-end projects more proficiently.
