  • The shift from Geopolitics to Geoeconomics and the failure of our modern Social Sciences
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Geoeconomics is gradually replacing the importance of Geopolitics. The transition is marked by the start of the process we call Globalization , about two decades old now, but still in its infancy, when government and government institutions discovered that they no longer were self-evident key actors and watchmen of world events . The process is an effect of the end of the Cold War and marks a strategic shift from political ideologies to economic realities. For decades fellow economists have praised the value of public and private borrowing, the production of services at the expense of the production of goods and they have underestimated the importance of trade surpluses for the Competitive Advantage of Nations. They have done so because they have failed to see what makes a nation, a region or a city wealthy in the long run. We have developed a social science paradigm at our universities which have undermined our own development. At the same time we have disregarded much of the tradition for critical thinking, as implied in Critical Theory but more fundamentally as understood for centuriesThe study of all living organisms is now studied with the use of Evolutionary Theory; except for the study of Man. We must start to ask ourselves why. Why should the Social Sciences be any different than Zoology in this respect, unless we say that Man stands outside of biology?

  • The empowered user - The critical interface to critical infrastructures
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 2010 5th International Conference on Critical Infrastructure, CRIS 2010 - Proceedings. - Beijing : IEEE. - 9781424480814 ; , s. 5617575-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Future smart grids will enable increased energy efficiency due to utilization of vast amounts of Distributed Energy Sources (DER) and Renewable Energy Sources (RES) partially controlled by empowered customers. Smart generation and distribution systems will connect energy providers with customers and other stakeholders utilizing new kinds of smart monitoring, coordination and data management infrastructures in service clouds. The service clouds are based on suitable virtualization techniques that could to used to harness critical interdependencies between critical infrastructures by introducing smart programmable interfaces. Smart meters enable empowerment of end users. Smart meters are, however, also access points to the service cloud. The paper addresses some security challenges of energy service clouds and smart meters.

  • A General Architecture For Developing A Sustainable Elderly Care e-Health System
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on some identified problems and challenges to the current healthcare system, this paper proposes architecture for developing e-health system to meet the challenges and resolve some problems. The architecture is based on a solid theoretical model of human activity, and it has properties such as sustainability, generality, and expandability. We demonstrate the properties of the architecture through an ongoing research project. We concluded that this architecture can be widely used to integrate various small scale applications of e-health systems and to resolve some current design problems such as interoperability and knowledge sharing.

  • The Role of Platforms in Software Development : Planting Real Options to Manage Uncertainties
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The innovation process of developing new software is a challenging job and an uncertain process because of the tasks associated with the development. These uncertainties can be categorized based on what drives the uncertainty. In this paper we separate between inner and outer uncertainty. Inner uncertainty stems from how a software product shall be developed and the cost associated with it. The outer uncertainty stems from what software product shall be developed and the revenues associated with it. This paper draws on theories from innovation and development research to develop a model to analyze how the uncertainty during a software development project can be managed. In doing so, we take a supply side view on software development where the firm does not merely respond to given market needs in the development cycle but instead plays a more active role. We operationalize the supply side of the innovation process in the software development by developing a model where we analyze how service platforms create real options for future innovations. An empirical study has been conducted to examine whether and how platforms are used in software development to plant options for future innovations as suggested by the model. The study was conducted at a company that primarily develops IT-phone-service products. This study shows that the company use platforms for the development of their products. Further, it is a prerequisite for developing software at the pace as well as the cost and the quality demanded by their customers. The platforms play different roles in the development depending on the product being developed. The study describes the development of two different products and how the platforms are used in different ways in the development of these products. The differences in the use of platforms is partly because of the different nature of the products but also due to the market maturity of the software, this result in a difference in the kind of real options that is created for the future. The study shows that both inner and outer uncertainties are reduced by the use of platforms in the development phase.

  • Developing an Object Oriented Model of Critical Success Factors for Clusters : The Linköping Information and Communication Technologies Cluster Test-Case
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An object oriented model (OOM) of critical success factors (CSFs) for clusters is developed on the basis of an extensive and critical review of the literature. The model is tested, as a proof of concept, in the Linköping information and communication technologies (ICT) cluster, Sweden. The model is flexible, scalable, and open-ended, applying equally to particular clusters as well as to clusters in general. The model aims to act both as a diagnostic tool for CSFs in particular clusters as well as a framework for policy and research in general. The model encompasses some 21 CSFs (e.g. trust, vision, knowledge) that belong or depend on one or more objects (e.g. firms, institutions, entrepreneurs) relevant to a cluster. A Venn diagram is initially developed on the basis of the literature to help delineate the relevant objects and is subsequently translated into the aforementioned model. The testing of the model follows a cluster life-cycle approach and ranks the 21 CSFs in terms of their relevance during different stages in the life-cycle of the Linköping ICT cluster. It is argued that the importance of different CSFs varies throughout a cluster´s life-cycle concluding with some relevant policy implications and areas of further research.

  • Competitive Intelligence at Trade Shows
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Findings from the case study confirm previous research by Marshall (1920) and Hayek (1937) about knowledge as a powerful engine of production. At trade shows Knowledge transfer between human being involves extensive communication (Albino, 2004). As suggested by Cook and Brown (1999) the crucial role of practice in learning processes may suggest relying on face-to-face communications rather than on electronic document exchange. This is also emphasized by Argote and Ingram (2000). Furthermore our findings correspond with those of Stringfellow et al. (2006) who suggest that current marketing education do not fully comprehend business imperatives. The same conclusions are found in McKenzie et al. (2002). We also observed poorly defined trade show objectives and an inability to follow them (Dallmeyer, 1998). The trend towards more entertainment as suggest by Friedman (2005) and Jensen (1999) was also confirmed.
