  • The shift from Geopolitics to Geoeconomics and the failure of our modern Social Sciences
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Geoeconomics is gradually replacing the importance of Geopolitics. The transition is marked by the start of the process we call Globalization , about two decades old now, but still in its infancy, when government and government institutions discovered that they no longer were self-evident key actors and watchmen of world events . The process is an effect of the end of the Cold War and marks a strategic shift from political ideologies to economic realities. For decades fellow economists have praised the value of public and private borrowing, the production of services at the expense of the production of goods and they have underestimated the importance of trade surpluses for the Competitive Advantage of Nations. They have done so because they have failed to see what makes a nation, a region or a city wealthy in the long run. We have developed a social science paradigm at our universities which have undermined our own development. At the same time we have disregarded much of the tradition for critical thinking, as implied in Critical Theory but more fundamentally as understood for centuriesThe study of all living organisms is now studied with the use of Evolutionary Theory; except for the study of Man. We must start to ask ourselves why. Why should the Social Sciences be any different than Zoology in this respect, unless we say that Man stands outside of biology?

  • The CILO method : firm-supportive research approach enhancing enterprise performance
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Knowledge Management and Innovation. - : International Business Information Management Association (IBIMA). ; , s. 1239-1251, s. 1239-1251
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a case of collaboration between academia and business firms in supporting innovation processes based on the CILO method, named after the CILO project (communication in learning organizations). The CILO method is an example of firm-supportive research approach. We describe the outcomes related to enhancing enterprise performance from applying the CILO-method in relation to one of the partner companies. The aim of the paper is to describe and discuss the concept of firm-supportive research in relation to the concept of innovation and to demonstrate how the specific characteristics of this research approach can enhance enterprise performance in one of our partner companies, Flower Systems Ltd.

  • The Internationalization of Multinational Companies (MNCs) : An intra-sector comparison among firms from developing and developed countries
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • According to the international statistic data of the United Nations Conference of Trade and Development (Unctad, 2008), the majority of Multinational Companies (MNCs) are from developed countries. However, in the last decade the participation of MNCs from emerging economies in the international flows of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) increased significantly, making them important global players. Although several scholars have addressed the internationalization process of emerging MNCs, no attempt has been made in the sense of directly comparing the internationalization process of firms from both developed and developing countries. To fill this gap, the aim of the present paper is to highlight the differences and similarities of the determinants and patterns of their internationalization. The integrated analytical model used in this study, which draws on insights from the Eclectic Paradigm and the Uppsala Internationalization approaches, has proved useful by helping to shed some light on the literature about MNCs’ internationalization process. The model in question has been structured in order to explore the differences and similarities of the internationalization processes of MNC from a developed and a developing country. This research uses a qualitative method with an exploratory nature, which allows deeper cross- cultural understanding. Multiple case studies of MNCs from countries with different levels of development (Brazil and Sweden) were carried out; this type of research allows addressing questions related to the determinants and patterns of internationalization. The results of the study show that there are strong evidences, which point out differences in term of ownership advantage development. However, the firms did not show substantial differences regarding internalization advantages. On the other hand, learning and experience of internationalization have been factors that have influenced the pattern and structure of the MNCs in both contexts. However, as the MNC from the developed country is more international and has longer experience, location decisions are no longer heavily influenced by these factors. The international network the MNC is part of and access to technology and knowledge partners are nowadays influencing the MNCs internationalization processes more. These findings are in line with earlier research that has pointed out that learning is most important in the early phases of MNCs international development while networks and location advantages are more important in later stages.

  • The internationalization challenge - Enabling and constraining factors in the medical-technology sector
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Strategic Entrepreneurship - The Promise for Future Entrepreneurship, Family Business and SME Research. - St. Gallen : KMU Verlag HSG. - 9783906541273 ; , s. 327-345
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • SMEs in high-technology industries, such as life-sciences, face a fundamental challenge. On theone hand, high product development costs push companies into early internationalization to increaseturnover and recover investments. On the other hand, internationalization is constrained, e.g. by financialand managerial resource limitations or the demand to follow local regulations. To date, little isknown about how high-tech SMEs actually manage this challenge. This paper presents an in-depthcase study of the internationalization process of a Swedish high-tech SME, to develop a better understandingof how the trade-offs related to internationalization are handled in practice. Combining insightsfrom the process theory of internationalization with international new venture theory, our findingsoutline factors affecting the internationalization process specific to the medical-technology industry, the company and the founding team.

  • The role of networks during different epochs of the early internationalization journey in a medical technology firm
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The importance of different types (i.e. both social and economic) of networks for the internationalization of new ventures is increasingly acknowledged in academic research (e.g. Coviello, 2006). Despite this increasing attention, few studies have in detail studied the role of networks and the link between networks and internationalization journeys over time (cf. Slotte-KockandCoviello, 2010). Instead, a rather descriptive, snap-shot approach to studying networks is still common. In addition, network dynamics are likely to be different in different industries. For life-science industries such as medical-technology Stremersch and Van Dyck (2009) demand that due to the specific industry characteristics new concepts would be needed to adequately understand the dynamics of this industry. In this paper, we attempt to contribute to filling gaps in current research by reconstructing the emergence and following the development of the network ties of an international new venture during different critical epochs of its internationalization journey. We present an in-depth case study of a Swedish SME from the medical-technology industry and the development of its network relations over time. By providing a detailed account of this development, we hope to improve the understanding of how different network constellations are related to the internationalization process over time.

  • Understanding and assessing science student teachers´ contemporary pedagogical content knowledge
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 20th Symposium on Chemistry and Science Education. ; , s. 111-122
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is based on a science teacher education research project that aims to connect what we know from research on [formative] assessment with what we know about student teachers ́ development of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), and, as a consequence, seeks to determine how an articulation of this knowledge can inform innovative and meaningful approaches to science teacher education. The message inherent in the project is the potential to positively focus on formative assessment of student teachers’ development of PCK in order to determine how that can contribute to student teachers’ professional learning in ways that they personally value. Therefore, an important consequential activity is the ability to develop a contemporary framework of quality pre-service teaching that builds out of the ways in which student teachers come to understand and develop their PCK.
