  • The Usage of Learning Journals in a Technology Management Education
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing]. - 9781612849515 ; , s. 900-904
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Technology Management is a unique program at Lund University, where a selected number (40) of students from the Faculty of Economics and from the Faculty of Engineering are taught together during their last 2 years of study. Their degree will be a Master's degree. Their views on problems and challenges in today's industry often complement each other. In addition it is important to complement their academic knowledge with insights about themselves and their own behavior. The introduction of so-called Learning Journals has proved to be a successful step in this direction. The learning journals are introduced in the course Project Leadership. Throughout the whole course (2 semesters) the students are writing learning journals and supervisors are commenting monthly. The learning journals have the purpose of 1) enabling personal reflection on the own process, 2) enabling reflection on the own position and part in the group, and 3) through the longitudinal effect of the course; it provides an opportunity to compare journals over time to become aware of and able to analyze the own learning process. In a newly performed Placement report, students that have graduated from the Technology Management programme the last 10 years, rate their education 4.37 out of 5. Some students even consider the Learning Journals among the most valuable parts of the whole programme in retrospect.

  • The CILO method : firm-supportive research approach enhancing enterprise performance
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Knowledge Management and Innovation. - : International Business Information Management Association (IBIMA). ; , s. 1239-1251, s. 1239-1251
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a case of collaboration between academia and business firms in supporting innovation processes based on the CILO method, named after the CILO project (communication in learning organizations). The CILO method is an example of firm-supportive research approach. We describe the outcomes related to enhancing enterprise performance from applying the CILO-method in relation to one of the partner companies. The aim of the paper is to describe and discuss the concept of firm-supportive research in relation to the concept of innovation and to demonstrate how the specific characteristics of this research approach can enhance enterprise performance in one of our partner companies, Flower Systems Ltd.

  • Counting beans or moving mountains - the predicament of energy efficiency policy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Energy efficiency first. - Stockholm : European Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ECEEE). - 9789163344558
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many studies identify energy efficiency as the most important and least costly option for reducing CO2-emissions while at the same time contributing to other policy objectives. The main challenge seems to be how to design, implement and evaluate policy to ensure that these opportunities are captured and policy perceived as legitimate. There is often a gap between rhetoric or broadly stated objectives in policy development and the narrow focus on verifying additional savings in evaluation. Ancillary benefits and costs are often overlooked and the primary criteria for impact evaluations are whether policies deliver additional and cost-effective savings. In practice, however, such impact evaluations are fraught with fundamental methodological difficulties and uncertainty. Double counting, spill-over, free rider and rebound effects are real and recognised factors that complicate evaluation. This has been experienced in the development of a harmonised calculation model as stipulated by the Energy Services Directive where a fair amount of attention has been given to such factors. In the mean time the more challenging, yet non-binding, 20 percent target of the EU Energy Efficiency Action Plan is stressing a need for new policy implementation. The question then becomes: how can the legitimate demands for policy to deliver additional savings be realistically addressed in practice and balanced against broad and long-term objectives? To answer this question, we provide an overview and assessment of the issues, opportunities, and correction factors for energy efficiency policy design and evaluation. We challenge the preoccupation with verifying countable savings and argue that it can be counterproductive. What counts are policy frameworks that can unleash and accelerate energy efficiency across all sectors in order to reach levels that are commensurate with broader energy and climate policy goals.

  • Rethinking User Involvement in the Front End of Healthcare Innovation
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to share insights from an empirical study within the Swedish healthcare system, based on a case study of the largest business unit of a Swedish medical technology company and its key customer segment. The study involving a Swedish medical technology company and three Swedish hospitals indicates need to move away from an archetypical, largely homogeneous view of the user, towards a more flexible, heterogeneous user perspective. Following from that insight the paper outlines a preliminary model aimed at improving the conditions of the firm for user involvement in the front end of healthcare innovation. In the proposed model, different users are brought to the foreground in different parts of the front-end innovation process. The research performed aimed at putting the business unit in a more beneficial position to involve users in the front end of innovation by increasing their understanding of a) which user types they actually have access to, b) which roles that different user types may take in the various stages of the innovation front-end.

  • Technological change and users: An actor-network perspective on the digitalization of video surveillance
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses aspects of technological change and the path towards institutionalization of new innovations, with a focus on how users matter and are part of the co-construction of such change. An empirical example from the security industry is used to illustrate how two distinct phases in the analog-to-digital shift in video surveillance technology have had very different outcomes with respect to the pace and nature of user adoption. The notions of actor- networks and communities of practice are used to analyze the different user and industry reactions to the introduction of the digital video recorder (DVR) and the network video camera respectively. The analysis focus on how established industry socio-technical actor- networks encompassing users incumbent industry and technological artifacts can resist attempts of disruptive innovation technological change from powerful outside forces.
