  • Evolutionary theory and the advantage paradox of multinational corporations : testing the effects of subsidiary embeddedness and autonomy on innovation development and transfer intensities
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings, 2011. ; , s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on innovation development and transfer in multinational corporations. We use the evolutionary theory of the multinational company as our point of departure and confront it with the advantage paradox of such organizations. Evolutionary theory on the multinational corporation argues that the more innovations are developed, the more the subsidiary is transferring them internally within the organization. However, there are studies indicating that, due to the multiplicity of roles, a subsidiary increasingly engaged in development activities has difficulties engaging in transfer activities. This suggest that there is an advantage paradox connected to the evolutionary theory of the multinational corporation in that being competent at developing innovations does not necessarily lead to the fact that such innovations become transferred. In the paper we explore the effects of external embeddedness and subsidiary autonomy on subsidiary innovation development, and these three dimensions are subsequently linked to subsidiary innovation transfer intensity. Our analysis suggests that embeddedness and autonomy is enhancing subsidiary innovativeness but does not contribute to transfer intensity. However, we can confirm that the more a subsidiary is innovating, although being embedded and autonomous, the more it will engage in innovation transfer to sister subsidiaries. Consequently, this paper addresses core dimensions of evolutionary theory, finding support for its arguments, while we cannot find support for the advantage paradox of multinational corporations.

  • Innovation project embeddedness as a driver of innovation novelty and business performance
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores innovation development in subsidiaries of the multinational corporation and offers a finegrained analysis of innovations in networks. We develop a conceptual model linking innovation project embeddedness to the degree of innovation in terms of novelty and innovation related business performance at the subsidiary level. We confront our conceptual model with a data set comprising 85 innovation development projects using partial least squares regression. Our findings reinforce the notion that innovations with a high degree of novelty, which have been found to reflect the competitive advantage of firms, increase business performance at the subsidiary level. However, we find no direct link between project level embeddedness and related business performance. Instead, such embeddedness, taking both internal and external relationships into account, enhances the novelty of innovations. Thus, embeddedness contributes to performance outcomes indirectly. Our study thus creates a link between the project level, innovation and firm level outcomes and contributes to the network and innovation literature.

  • Internal Embeddedness, Headquarters Involvement, and Innovation Importance in Multinational Enterprises
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Management Studies. - : Wiley. - 0022-2380 .- 1467-6486. ; 48:7, s. 1612-1639
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we apply a business network perspective to investigate the effects of internal embeddedness and headquarters involvement on subsidiaries’ innovation-related competencies, and on the perceived importance of innovation in multinational enterprises. A model framed in the innovation context is developed and six hypotheses are tested on 85 innovation projects in 23 multinational enterprises using partial least squares based structural equation modelling. The results suggest that, contrary to predictions of the business network perspective, headquarters involvement in the innovation development process improves subsidiary competencies while internal embeddedness does not. Headquarters involvement, driven by subsidiary internal embeddedness, enhances the innovation impact on the subsidiary, which in turn influences innovation importance at corporate level. Thus, the business network perspective is challenged but at the same time expanded in terms of highlighting the role of, and interplay between, different internal corporate actors, particularly the role of headquarters, in developing competencies and creating competitive advantage.

  • Rationality vs ignorance : The role of MNE headquarters in subsidiaries' innovation processes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of International Business Studies. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0047-2506 .- 1478-6990. ; 42:7, s. 958-970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Innovation processes in multinational enterprises (MNE) are largely context specific, and carried out at the subsidiary level. Therefore, corporate headquarters (HQ) involvement in these processes becomes a major issue. A typical assumption in international business (IB) theory is that HQ based on its own knowledge, makes rational choices about its own involvement. However, according to some studies, HQ involvement can be assumed to be less rational, in the sense that it reflects not HQ knowledge but the normative expectations associated with the role of HQ as top manager. The purpose of this paper is to contrast these two perspectives by exploring their implications regarding the relationship between HQ knowledge about and HQ involvement in innovation processes at the subsidiary level, and regarding the impact of this potential involvement on innovation processes performance. The analysis results in six propositions and an illustrative case. Our contribution to IB research is primarily theoretical: we bring to the scene an alternative approach the sheer ignorance perspective with the potential to explain the behavior of key actors in the MNE. We argue, however, that the theoretical conflict between the two perspectives should be addressed by empirical research. We conclude with suggestions for the directions such research might take.

  • Headquarters' Influence on Knowledge Transfer Performance
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Management International Review. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0025-181X .- 0938-8249 .- 1861-8901. ; 50:4, s. 471-491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates headquarters' value-adding role in knowledge transfer. Transfer performance is considered in terms of both efficiency and effectiveness, and a model that includes headquarters' distribution of decision-making rights, resource allocation, and direct intervention is tested on 141 innovation transfer projects. The findings indicate that headquarters have both positive and negative influences on the efficiency and effectiveness of transfer processes. There is thus a need to consider the inherent trade-offs in the choices made in promoting knowledge transfer.
