- This paper presents a study of differences in occupational rank between gay and heterosexual males as well as between lesbian and heterosexual females. We estimate different specifications of an ordered probit model on register data from Sweden. Our data consist of married heterosexual men and women and homosexual men and women living in civil unions. We find that homosexual men have a lower probability of working in a profession demanding a longer university education or a management profession than heterosexual men. In contrast, we find that homosexual women are more likely than heterosexual women to work in such professions.

- We present earnings differentials between homosexuals and heterosexuals. In line with previous research, we find that gay males earn less than heterosexual males, and that lesbians earn more than heterosexual females. However, when combining the individuals into households, our results are strikingly different: very small earnings differentials between gay households and heterosexual households are found. Lesbian households earn considerably less. The largest earnings inequalities between spouses are found among gay males followed by heterosexuals. Studying sexual orientation and earnings is complex, and household earnings have to be taken into consideration when conclusions are drawn.

Self-employment matching: an analysis of dual-earner couples in Sweden

- This paper presents an analysis of self-employment matching among dual-earner couples in Sweden. The results show that self-employment propensities are positively correlated across partners. Self-employment propensities are significantly higher for both males and females whose spouses are self-employed. The existence of ‘positive assortative mating' and the fact that self-employment knowledge and abilities are transferred across partners are presented as explanations for the results. One policy conclusion that can be drawn from the results is that if governments and policymakers want to increase the rate of female self-employment, stimulating overall self-employment might be effective, since an important determinant of female self-employment is having a self-employed spouse.

- This paper studies the intergenerational transmissions of self-employmentabilities among immigrants in Sweden. The results show that second-generationimmigrants are over-represented in self-employment compared to natives.Male immigrants from countries neighbouring to Sweden and natives alike seem touse both mothers and fathers as role models in their self-employment decision, butthe father is the stronger role model among male immigrants from more geographicallydistant regions. Female immigrants use both their father and theirmother as role models in their self-employment decision. Furthermore, maleimmigrants and male natives tend to become self-employed in the same businesssector as their fathers; female immigrants and female natives with self-employedparents are over-represented in self-employment but not necessarily in the samebusiness sector as their parents.

- This paper presents a Seemingly Unrelated Regressions estimation of earnings differentials between three generations of immigrants and natives in Sweden. The results show that male first-generation immigrants were at an earnings advantage compared to male natives. Among male second-generation immigrants the earnings differentials compared to natives were very small, while third-generation immigrants were at an earnings disadvantage compared to natives. The same pattern was found among females. Thus, the results indicate that ethnic differences in earnings are likely to occur even after several generations spent in a country and that the problem of immigrant assimilation that exists in many European countries may last for several generations.
