  • Interfaces of control. Technocratic and socio-ideological control in a global management consultancy firm
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Accounting, Organizations and Society. - 0361-3682. ; 29:3-4, s. 423-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates a variety of forms of management control in a large management consultancy company. The very high level of compliance with corporate objectives among employees is highlighted and singled out as a phenomenon worth exploring. The company exhibits a rich variety of various formal control devices focusing on financial issues as well as human resources. The paper shows that these do not fully work according to intention and that their control effects do not comply that well with the bureaucratic- technocratic logic they rest upon. Technocratic control systems are instead identified as non-obvious sources of socio-ideological control. The paper emphasizes the interface between different forms of control and argues for a more symbolic, meaning-focusing view on bureaucratic and output measurement control. • Waterborne nitrogen and phosphorus inputs and water flow to the Baltic Sea 1995-2018
  • 2020
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Annual water flow in 2018 to the Baltic Sea was approximately 14,300 m3 s-1 which is about 9% lower than the average of 1995-2018. Annual waterborne input (inputs via rivers and direct point sources discharging directly into the sea) of total nitrogen was approximately 530,000 tonnes in 2018 or 21% lower than the average of 1995-2018. The corresponding annual total phosphorus input amounted to approximately 21,900 tonnes, which was 32% lower than the average. Inputs of nitrogen and phosphorus from direct point sources have decreased with approximately 60% and 84% since 1995, respectively. In 2018, inputs from direct point sources constituted 5% of the corresponding total waterborne input to the Baltic Sea. In 1995, the proportions of the direct inputs were 8% for TN and 15% for TP, respectively. Annual flow weighted riverine TN concentration decreased significantly (95% confidence) to the Bothnian Sea, the Baltic Proper, the Danish Straits and the Kattegat, and for TP to the Bothnian Sea, the Baltic Proper, the Gulf of Finland, the Gulf of Riga and the Danish Straits since 1995. Both TN and TP concentrations decreased significantly for the total riverine inputs to the Baltic Sea.

  • Habitat and Habitus: Boxed-in versus Box-Breaking Research
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Organization Studies. - : SAGE Publications. - 1741-3044 .- 0170-8406. ; 35:7, s. 967-987
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper argues that scholarly work is increasingly situated in narrowly circumscribed areas of study, which are encouraging specialization, incremental adding-to-the-literature contributions and a blinkered mindset. Researchers invest considerable time and energy in these specialized areas in order to maximize their productivity and career prospects. We refer to this way of doing research and structuring careers as boxed-in research. While such research is normally portrayed as a template for good scholarship, it gives rise to significant problems in management and organization studies, as it tends to generate a shortage of novel and influential ideas. We propose box-breaking research as a strategy for how researchers and institutions can move away from the prevalence of boxed-in research and, thus, be able to generate more imaginative and influential research results. We suggest three versions: box changing, box jumping and, more ambitiously, box transcendence.

  • Less followership, less leadership? An inquiry into the basic but seemingly forgotten downsides of leadership.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: M@N@Gement. - 1286-4692. ; 8:3, s. 266-282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Leadership is generally viewed as important and beneficial for individuals as well as organizations. The term, however, also implies followership and the targets for leadership may be less enthusiastic about adopting a follower position. From a follower’s point of view, there might be downsides associated with a leadership/followership relationship, including negative effects on identity and reduced autonomy. These often neglected downsides may lead to a dampening of the enthusiasm for leadership in practice and form a counterforce to the prevalence of leadership. This aversion towards followership may therefore mean ‘less’ leadership, for instance less salient ‘leader/follower’ qualities in relations and interactions than is generally assumed in leadership/followership studies.

  • När ledarskapet krackelerar
  • 2015

  • Questioning the notion of feminine leadership
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Gender, Work and Organization. - : Wiley. - 1468-0432 .- 0968-6673. ; 7:3, s. 144-157
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditionally, leadership has been equated with masculinity. Managerial jobs, at least in business and on senior levels, have been defined as a matter of instrumentality, autonomy, result-orientation, etc. something which is not particularly much in line with what is broadly assumed to be typical for females. Today, however, there seems to be a broad interest in leadership being more participatory, non-hierarchical, flexible and group-oriented. These new ideas on leadership are often seen by students of gender as indicating a feminine orientation. This article argues that it is necessary to critically discuss the whole idea of gender labelling leadership as masculine or feminine and suggests that we should be very careful and potentially aware of the unfortunate consequences when we use gender labels. Constructing leadership as feminine may be of some value as a contrast to conventional ideas on leadership and management but may also create a misleading impression of women's orientation to leadership as well as reproducing stereotypes and the traditional gender division of labour.
