  • Entrepreneurship and technological innovation : The influence of uncertainty and entrepreneurial ability on innovation speed in new technology start-ups
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship, People and Organisations. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781783478767 - 9781783478774 ; , s. 116-135, s. 116-135
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the study we develop and test a novel theoretical framework that examine how innovation speed in technology start-ups are influenced by the uncertain character of the technologies and markets that underlie patented inventions. We rely in our framework on previous conceptual and empirical work to distinguish between perceived state, effect and response uncertainty and to hypothesize about their potential differential impact on innovation speed. In addition, our framework also seeks to explain how the ability of the technology entrepreneur to spot and seize new business opportunities influences the uncertainty-speed relationship in start-up settings. We tested our framework and hypotheses on a unique and comprehensive dataset with detailed information about patented inventions commercialized in start-ups by independent technology entrepreneurs in Sweden. Overall, our results show the value and importance of distinguishing between different kinds of perceived uncertainty when theorizing about the process of developing and commercializing patented inventions in new technology start-ups. Moreover, our empirical findings suggest that the ability to spot and seize new business opportunities can be both an asset and a liability in this process.

  • Boyan Jovanovic : recipient of the 2019 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : SPRINGER. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 53:3, s. 547-553
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 2019 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research has been awarded to Professor Boyan Jovanovic at New York University in the USA. Boyan Jovanovic has developed pioneering research that advances our understanding of the competitive dynamics between incumbent firms and new entrants, entrepreneurial learning and selection processes, and the importance of entrepreneurship for the economy. Key perspectives in his research are that the entrepreneur makes employment choices based on the comparative advantage of his or her skills and that entrepreneurial firms are vehicles of technological change and knowledge diffusion that influence industry dynamics and, in turn, economic growth.

  • Variable risk preferences in new firm growth and survival
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Venturing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0883-9026 .- 1873-2003. ; 31:4, s. 408-427
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We outline and test a decision-making theory of new venture growth and survival. Building upon research in entrepreneurship and decision making under risk, we hypothesize that entrepreneurs' attention to survival and aspiration reference points changes based on venture age (experience-based learning), size (differences in decision complexity), and performance decision domain. Examining a panel of 14,760 new ventures in the professional services sector, our findings show how risk preferences change as a venture ages and increases in size. This approach offers a more nuanced view of decision making under risk and provides a theoretical explanation for the common patterns of new ventures' probability of exit and growth diminishing with age and size.

  • Dynamiken bland företagare, anställda och kombinatörer
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv. - Karlstad : Karlstads universitet. - 1400-9692. ; 15:2, s. 43-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • How Significant Events and Team Trust Predict Member’s Exit in New Venture Teams
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings. - 2151-6561 .- 0065-0668. ; 2023:1, s. 11742-11742
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines how the significant events and team member trust in new ventures affect exit from the team. We consider team member exit as an outcome that affects both individuals, the team, and the performance of the new venture. We develop our arguments based on event system theory, which is specifically beneficial to understand how new ventures develop. We test our arguments using a unique longitudinal data set that follows 108 teams and their 218 members over a year using repeated questionnaires (n=782). We use a Bayesian and joint modeling approach to model team turnover and correct for non-ignorable non-responses under population heterogeneity. We find that team members' level of trust affects how they perceive significant events (novel and disruptive). Trust does not affect team members’ exit. Disruptive events are strongly associated with team members’ exit. This suggests that disruptive events mediate the effect of trust on team members’ exit. We discuss the implications of our results for theory.

  • A Response to Honig and Samuelsson (2014)
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Venturing Insights. - : Elsevier BV. - 2352-6734. ; 3:July, s. 1-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Honig and Samuelsson (2014) recently published an article in this outlet criticizing “Does business planning facilitate the development of new ventures? “ a paper I wrote with Scott Shane nearly 15 years ago. They claim that their effort adds to the discussion of (a) the merits of business planning, (b) data replication and extension, (c) sample selection bias, (d) evaluation of normative research and (e) publication standards. However, most of the claims they make are incorrect.
