    • In recent years, the location of logistics facilities, in particular with regard to “logistics sprawl,” has emerged as a topic in the literature that is, a process of spatial decentralisation of logistics facilities in large metropolitan areas. The aim of this paper is to look at logistics sprawl patterns in the Gothenburg metropolitan area, in the south-west of Sweden. Looking at a medium-size monocentric urban region that is also a major port gateway for the country, this study provides novel elements in the study of locational patterns of freight facilities in metropolitan areas. It also provides an opportunity to identify the role of freight in planning, land use and zoning policies. A literature review is carried out on the issues of freight and logistics facilities locational patterns. A quantitative analysis is proposed, using data from Swedish statistics about the number of establishments with a NACE code related to logistics, as well as an original method providing a “cleaned” and more comprehensive dataset. We look at data at two different scales, one metropolitan and one regional, for years 2000 and 2014, as to enable a comparative and diachronical analysis. Logistics sprawl is measured by the average distance of warehouses to their common centre of gravity. Finally, interviews with transport and logistics providers as well as real estate investors and public agencies in the region, add qualitative information on the relative importance of different location factors related to logistics facilities and the issues raised. Logistics sprawl in Gothenburg occurs in specific ways, and differently at the two geographical levels of analysis.

  • The Shipper's perspective on slow steaming : Study of Six Swedish companies

    • Trans-ocean liner shipping companies adopt slow steaming during periods when the market is characterised by low demand, high fuel prices, low freight rates and overcapacity. The most recent instance in which this occurred was the period following the 2008/2009 global financial crises, and the speeds have not yet rebounded to the pre-crisis levels. Most of the existing research regarding slow steaming takes environmental, economic and maritime engineering perspectives, meaning that the phenomenon is studied from the viewpoint of ship owners. The purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of slow steaming from the shipper's perspective.

  • Shipping in the EU emissions trading system: implications for mitigation, costs and modal split

    • EU recently decided to include shipping, meaning all intra-European shipping and 50% of extra-European voyages, in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) beginning in 2024. This article provides an early assessment of the impacts of the EU ETS on the shipping sector’s potential reductions in greenhouse gas emissions for different types of ships. It further examines selected mitigation measures and the impact on modals split and costs. The study employs a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative estimates (based on data from the EU monitoring, reporting and verification system) with qualitative data and information from interviews with key actors and from previous literature. This approach aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of the EU ETS. The inclusion of shipping in the EU ETS is expected to introduce significant incentives to reduce emissions. We estimate that switching to bio-methanol at an emissions allowance price of €90–100/tCO2 will be cost-effective for a minor share of shipping segments (representing about 0.5-5% of all ships), whereas at a price above €150/tCO2 it could be cost-effective for a considerable share (potentially 75%) of ships. In the short term, the costs incurred by the EU ETS will be passed on to transport customers as a surcharge. The increased cost may, unless properly addressed, drive carbon leakage. Meanwhile, a modal shift away from shipping may occur in the roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) and roll-on passenger (RoPax) segments due to direct competition with road and rail transport and the relative ease of shifting to other modes of transport.

    • Förstudien illusterar hur de svenska inre vattenvägarna kan användas för lokala och regionala godstransporter. Värden identifieras som potentiellt kan realiseras till nyttor på systemnivå. Det är ökad framkomlighet och bättre markanvändning i urbana miljöer, minskad belastning på väg och järnvägsnät, redundanta transportvägar (lägre sårbarhet), systemflexibilitet genom snabba förändringar, energieffektivitet och lågt buller. Vi ser att det finns potentiella nyttor på systemnivå och svagheter kring fartyget och dess gränsytor till väg- och järnväg som kan handla om omlastning och tillgänglighet till kajer och hamnar. Det senare är en fråga för stads- och regionplanerare som förefaller ovana att se kajer och strandlinjen som en potentiell på- och avfart till vattenvägen. Ett övergripande mål för projektet, Vattenvägen -den intermodala pusselbiten till resurseffektiva regional- och tätortstransporter är att visa hur, på vilket sätt och i vilken omfattning, vattenvägen kan användas för att energi- och resurseffektivisera region- och tätortstransportsystem och därmed bidra till de transportpolitiska målen. Förstudien har påbörjat arbetet och identifierar en rad avgränsade steg som kan genomföras som delprojekt och samtidigt leda mot de övergripande projektmålen.

  • Impact of including maritime transport in the EU ETS

    • The European Green Deal from the European Commission in 2019 set a high aim: that EU will become climate neutral by 2050. As a part of this, the European Commission proposed that the EU Emission Trading System (ETS), is extended to include the maritime sector. This report assesses different design features of shipping in ETS, analyse the impact on the shipping industry and the environment. The report investigates what impacts the inclusion of shipping may have on incentives for abatement, what types of emission reductions may follow, if the policy will lead to modal shifts or carbon leakage (meaning that vessels avoid EU ports in order to evade the policy) and what attitudes and expectations can be found among Swedish shipping lines and transport customers.

    • Six principles for the design of transport systems are described in this article, including direct link, corridor, hub-and-spoke, connected hubs, static routes, and dynamic routes. The designs are theoretically discussed defining the operational character of each design and their applica-tion in passenger, freight and rail freight transport. The theory is then applied to intermodal freight transport by comparing the terminology in this article with that used in scientific literature. Advantages of using a generic terminology over contextual ones are identified from the perspectives of researchers, commercial operators and policy makers.

    • The focus of this article is to identify, characterise and qualitatively evaluate the existing measures for increasing the utilisation of loading space in intermodal road-rail freight line trains. Normally, these trains operate like intercity passenger trains, because they make short unit load transhipment stops along rail corridors in order to travel comparatively small and short flows. The measures for loading space utilisation include adapting the train’s capacity, changing the departure times, altering the train routes and sending trucks to different terminals as well as replacing rail transport with trucks. Some of the measures require improved information sharing, and executives can strengthen the effect of the measures by adding decision support systems and price incentives to transport buyers.

    • Understanding and meeting stakeholder demands for sustainability while striving for improved business performance (BP) presents a significant challenge. The shipping industry has been relatively slow in its sustainability efforts. However, it faces mounting pressure from various stakeholders, particularly customers (i.e., shippers directly or via logistics service providers), who increasingly demand reduced emissions from shipping operations. Consequently, environmental performance (EP) has become a key criterion in awarding shipping tenders, prompting shipping firms to adopt sustainable business practices (SBP). This study aims to investigate the relationships between customers' expectations (CE), the adoption of SBP and the EP and BP of European shipping companies. Structural equation modelling was employed to analyse the interrelationships among CE, SBP, EP and BP. The findings indicate a positive association between CE and the adoption of SBP, which in turn enhances EP and BP. Managers are encouraged to proactively allocate resources towards implementing SBP, as this not only improves EP but also enables better responsiveness to stakeholders' expectations, leading to increased profitability, customer satisfaction and corporate image. These outcomes yield benefits for all stakeholders involved in the European freight transport ecosystem.

    • Maritime transport buyers such as shippers and freight forwarders demand maritime transport firms to improve their environmental footprint. Besides price, the environmental performance of maritime transport firms is increasingly being used as criteria for awarding shipping tenders by customers. The objective is to examine the impact of customer expectations on the adoption of sustainable business practices (SBP) in the European short sea shipping (SSS) industry and in turn, the impact of SBP on their environmental and business performance. To investigate the hypothesised relationships among customer expectations, SBP, and environmental and business performance, a structural equation model is developed and tested with data from a survey answered by 101 SSS companies headquartered in Europe. The results include that customer expectations positively affect the adoption of SBP, which as a result improve the environmental and business performance of European SSS companies.
