  • Kvinnors företagande : arbetsmarknadsbeteende och organisatorisk lösning
  • 2007

  • The concept of urban hibernation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Planning Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0965-4313 .- 1469-5944. ; 24:2, s. 316-343
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today, as a result of fast-paced societal transformations, many small towns face severe developmental challenges and an uncertain future. Departing from the broader theory of developmental disequilibrium, we launch the concept of urban hibernation to explain the process of periodic small-town regress. The concept—along with its key stages and turning points—is presented to the background of urbanization processes encountered in Poland. At the same time, the focus on small towns offers an alternative and more context-sensitive explication to eclectic development models inherent to larger cities. As such, we argue that the concept of urban hibernation is apt to serve as a more precise research and planning tool in the context of small towns, and particularly in the critical moments of rise and recession. By applying a historical perspective, we address the importance of proper identification of the various and ever-changing city-forming factors, including their role for spatial planning at different scales. Urban hibernation should thus be considered as an intrinsic part of the geographic environment, which, due to the volatility of its socio-economic components, transcends the traditional rural–urban divide. Our conceptual contribution may thus serve as a background for a fuller understanding of the variability and dynamics of intra-urban structures.

  • Landlords, Land Companies, Farmers, and Migrant Workers in Global Agrarian Capitalism until the First World War
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Przeglad Polonijny. - : Polska Academia Nauk. - 0137-303X. ; XXXI:1, s. 67-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this article, I want to outline some perspectives of the political economy of the mass migration, which can be connected to agrarian capitalism as a world wide and long lasting process. One of its starting points is the changing nature of landowning from vague definitions of ownership to a distinct individual one, whereby land turned into a commodity on a growing land market. The process started in England and continued in the northwestern parts of the European continent, and then it was developed in areas, where Europeans settled as landowners.Another starting point is the proletarianization process that is connected to the changing nature of land ownership, meaning that sons and daughters faced growing difficulties to take over the family farm but instead had to turn into laborers or try to find land somewhere else. Thus, the mass migration that leads to settling and homesteading in another land - may it be North America, South Africa, Australia or Bosnia - should be looked upon as a way of avoiding proletarianization but instead keeping the social position as a farmer. Often that mass migration included ejection of native peoples, who did not practice individual and private land owning principles. Some of the farmers - the agrarian bourgeoisie - were one of the foundations of capitalist modes of production, and they employed farm workers permanently or for seasonal work in large numbers. These workers migrated to areas with large-scale commercial farming. Where the large migrant settlers/homesteaders demanded large numbers of workers but could not get them as for instance in the southern parts of North America and South Africa, forced labor was recruited in different ways. In those cases, the class relations were racialized, indicating that mass migration often must be connected to an analysis of ethnic relations. I will also touch upon the issue of the gendered and generational perspective of mass migration within a growing, worldwide agrarian capitalism.

  • Polish Migration to Denmark and Sweden before World War 1
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Przeglad Polonijny. - : Polska Akademia Nauk. - 0137-303X. ; XXXIII:4, s. 63-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although Polish migration to Denmark and Sweden in the early 20th century was not very numerous and was limited in time (1890-1929), it is worth a study, because it had a specific and odd characteristic. Labour and seasonal migration dominated totally. Children of peasants left their homes to earn money, which they sent home, and the families could survive and reproduce themselves of part of the Polish peasant class. Most migrants were young women, who came from Galizia and Russian Poland, but also some men came from Russian Poland. In this article, I criticize the existing view in Denmark and Sweden that Polish migrants were wage depressors and/or strike breakers. Instead, I argue, that a vast majority of them made a labour reserve. Employers in Denmark and Sweden actively recruited and contracted Polish workers for seasonal work that native workers were not willing or able to perform on offered conditions. The employers sent the Polish workers back home when there was no more demand for their labour during the winter season, and they recruited workers again when extra labour was demanded next spring. Thus, the Polish workers could spend winter time with their families, and Danish and Swedish employers did not have to pay the reproduction cost of its labour reserve, when they could not put the Polish workers to do profitable labour.

  • From policy to misery? The State Agricultural Farms vs. 'the rural'
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Quaestiones Geographicae. - : Adam Mickiewicz University Poznan. - 2082-2103 .- 2081-6383 .- 0137-477X. ; 38:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1989 was a turning point within the socio-economic development in the former Eastern bloc, initiating a system transformation that affected the society at large. It also contributed to the crystallisation of certain cultural landscapes, hitherto largely illegible due to the inhibition of spatial processes encountered during Communism. In Poland, after a quarter-century of free market economy, the focus on social problems began to expand to the spatial realm as well. It became apparent that the progressive social polarisation that followed was most prominent in environments striated by a particular landscape type – the former State Agricultural Farm (PGR). Considering PGRs “the epitome of rurality” subject to ideas informing the direction of contemporary “rural development” prompts a different way of looking at the problem. In this paper, we investigate the concept of rurality in the discursive tenor of implemented policy and contrast it with contextualised empirical examples. Our findings suggest that efficient policy should be confronted with the expectations of residents at the local level, while introducing top-down actions usually ends in failure as in the case of post-PGR estates.

  • Capturing complexity : Forests, decision-making and climate change mitigation action
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Global Environmental Change. - : Elsevier. - 0959-3780 .- 1872-9495. ; 52, s. 238-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Managed forests can play an important role in climate change mitigation due to their capacity to sequester carbon. However, it has proven difficult to harness their full potential for climate change mitigation. Managed forests are often referred to as socio-ecological systems as the human dimension is an integral part of the system. When attempting to change systems that are influenced by factors such as collective knowledge, social organization, understanding of the situation and values represented in society, initial intentions often shift due to the complexity of political, social and scientific interactions. Currently, the scientific literature is dispersed over the different factors related to the socio-ecological system. To examine the level of dispersion and to obtain a holistic view, we review climate change mitigation in the context of Swedish forest research. We introduce a heuristic framework to understand decision-making connected to climate change mitigation. We apply our framework to two themes which span different dimensions in the socio-ecological system: carbon accounting and bioenergy. A key finding in the literature was the perception that current uncertainties regarding the reliability of different methods of carbon accounting inhibits international agreement on the use of forests for climate change mitigation. This feeds into a strategic obstacle affecting the willingness of individual countries to implement forest-related carbon emission reduction policies. Decisions on the utilization of forests for bioenergy are impeded by a lack of knowledge regarding the resultant biophysical and social consequences. This interacts negatively with the development of institutional incentives regarding the production of bioenergy using forest products. Normative disagreement about acceptable forest use further affects these scientific discussions and therefore is an over-arching influence on decision-making. With our framework, we capture this complexity and make obstacles to decision-making more transparent to enable their more effective resolution. We have identified the main research areas concerned with the use of managed forest in climate change mitigation and the obstacles that are connected to decision making.
