  • Ecology and the accumulation of capital : thinking capitalism through the web of life
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Capitalism as world-ecology is an effort to move from the “environmental history of” capitalism, or modernity, or the world market, to capitalism AS environmental history. Financial crises, for instance, are not social or economic crises that make their footprint on the rest of nature; they are crises of a key moment of capitalism’s symbolic and material ordering of the relation between humans and the rest of nature. This dialectical alternative views the great movements of modern world history – industrial and agricultural revolutions, successive new imperialisms, the development of the world market – as socio-ecological projects and processes, aimed at reconfiguring nature-society relations. ‘Nature,’ no longer a passive substance upon which humanity leaves its footprint, becomes an active bundle of relations, formed and re-formed through the historically- and geographically-specific movements of humans, with the rest of nature. This entails more than a catalogue of capitalism’s biophysical depredations. It calls for new synthesis that locates the accumulation of capital, the production of nature, and pursuit of power in a singular and differentiated whole. This perspective begins from the premise that capitalism does not act upon nature so much as develop through nature-society relations. Capitalism does not have an ecological regime; it is an ecological regime.

  • Swedish Advertisers’ Association and Institutional Development of Swedish Export Promotion Advertising 1955-1972
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Marketing and Social Change. - Toronto : Conference on Historical Analysis and Research in Marketing (CHARM). ; , s. 37-40
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Purpose – To analyze the Swedish Advertisers’ Association role in the institutional development ofSwedish export promotion 1955-1972.Methodology/approach – Qualitative method, business interest organization theory, advertisingconcepts related to the historical development of marketing.Findings – Thanks to bottoms-up engagement of members in the mid-1950s, leading to the formationof the knowledge-exchange committee for members of the association (the E-group), the associationbecame crucial in enabling Swedish companies getting access to marketing resources when competingon foreign markets, as well as becoming a key player in supporting the collective export promotionefforts of the Swedish government. The E-Group increased member participation and knowledgeexchange among members, supporting professionalization and legitimacy of advertising practices.Limitations/implications – While based on a national case, the study illustrates how marketingassociations act in an institutional system, while being challenged by member demands to supplythem with adequate resources, highlighting the importance of analyzing both the collectiveorganizations and the political system they are part of to understand the historical development ofmarketing.Originality/ value – The history of export promotion and export advertising is not well studied on aninstitutional level. This study furthers knowledge of this significant aspect of marketing history aswell as the history of political economy, making salient the interaction between the state andorganized business interests in a key aspect of a national economy. This should interest the fields ofmarketing history as well as, business studies, economics and political science. Keywords – Advertising history, business history, export promotion, business associationClassification – Research paper

  • Selected urban centers of the Holy Cross Province in view of the concept of urban hibernation : Wybrane ośrodki miejskie województwa świętokrzyskiego w świetle koncepcji hibernacji miast
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 5th National Conference on Historical Geography (V Ogólnopolska Konferencja Geografii Historycznej), 22-23 June 2017, Łódź, Poland.
Problemy te Autorzy omawiają w kontekście przykładów miast z terenu obecnego województwa świętokrzyskiego – m.in.

  • Making a Living, not Music History: The Economic History of the Swedish Dance Band Music Industry 1970-2010.47th Annual Economic and Business History Conference, Salt Lake City, 18th - 22nd May.
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Dansband music, a genre exclusive to Scandinavia and having a profound influence on the success of Swedish music, has post 1960 accounted for a significant part of music sales - the most successful bands have sold more albums than ABBA - and live performances in Sweden. The genre has particular features: Musicians are pro or semi-pro and often have their own companies; songs are not foremost for listening, but to supply live dance music. This gives the music a strong commercial potential, and a specific business model where gigs account for much of revenue, while music sales often utilize channels (petrol stations, grocery stores and mail order) outside the traditional record trade. We link the development in the industry to socio-demographic and institutional factors. We find that adaptation to the audience's taste, a standardization of products, and control over production and distribution channels have contributed to the industry's longevity.

  • Corporative Privileges Undermined. : The Meaning of Extra-Ordinary Taxation in Sweden in the 17th and 18th Centuries
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: La Fiscalità nell'economia europea. Secc. XIII-XVIII • Fiscal Systems in the European Economy 13th - 18th Centuries.. - 9788884537034
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The point of departure for this paper is the notion that taxation in Sweden in the 17th and 18th centuries was a special case. It was essentially direct, periodic and individual in character. Based on that, the communicative aspects of extra-ordinary taxation are considered. To do something to someone is to make a statement. The solutions to the questions of who should pay, and how much different groups and individuals should pay, can be seen as an articulation of the relationship between different groups or classes. The social distribution of taxation thus had ideological implications. In the course of the 17th century extra-ordinary taxation in Sweden was not only levied on individual peasant households, but it was also targeting specific crafts and professions, particularly civil servants and military officers. In the 18th century this became even more evident, although it was never an unproblematic or uninterrupted process. Thus, extra-ordinary taxation in Sweden tended to undermine corporative privileges, in particular noble privileges. It adhered to the principle that the rich should make a more substan¬tial contribution to the common good than those who had less. In this way, it conveyed a type of christian morality at the same time as it expressed a political program. This process can in turn be related to the pro¬cess in which royal subjects were transformed into citizens.

  • Management of cultural heritage for growth - preservation in search for user values
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Objects and environments related to cultural heritage have attained an increased interest in policies for regional growth. Heritage management is then not only considered as a preservation of history but a resource and an asset for creation of attractiveness and development. In Sweden, this change is in accordance with the ongoing transformation of the national regional policy, where initiatives are delegated to the regions. The transformation is moreover, in accordance with aims in the European union, where cohesion money is directed towards the regional level. However, historically preservation of cultural heritage has been a national interest and although it formally is delegated to counties, management still is dominated by traditional values, perspectives, and methods developed for the national heritage. This paper presents a study among administrators of cultural heritage at the regional level, county antiquarians, that indicate how lack of theory, empirical examples, evaluation, as well as basic knowledge on regional development, add confusion to the debate between heritage interests and actors from industry, housing, politics, and other parts of public administration. Ambitions to develop cultural tourism and attractive housing highlight conflicts between preservation perspectives and commercial interests. While developing a language for the analyses of relations between cultural heritage and regional development, taking care of the spatial context a heritage object is located in, it is here argued for further introduction of methods of regional analysis and policy evaluation in the management of cultural heritage. Such methods and languages may improve the basis for negotiations between conflicting interests.

  • Post-socialist estates and the concept of rurality : From policy to misery
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Eastern European Countryside Revisited - 25 years after the transition, 26-27 June 2015 - Toruń, Poland.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1989 was a turning point within the socio-economic development in the former Eastern bloc, initiating a system transformation that affected the society at large. It also contributed to the crystallization of certain cultural landscapes, hitherto largely illegible due to the inhibition of spatial processes encountered during Communism. In Poland, after a quarter-century of free market economy, the focus on social problems began to expand to the spatial realm as well. It became apparent that the progressive social polarization that followed was most prominent in environments striated by a particular landscape type – the former State Agricultural Farm (PGR). Its dysfunctional character, noticeable in a wide array of dimensions (unemployment, poverty, social anomies, poor health, claiming attitudes, substandard housing, ghettoization) has since posed serious challenges for planners and policy-makers. Typically, estates stricken by these kinds of aggregated predicaments are associated with “urban areas” along with specific theoretical frameworks and their implications for consecutive development strategies. In that light, considering PGRs “the epitome of rurality” subject to ideas informing the direction of contemporary “rural development” prompts a different way of looking at the problem. In this paper, we investigate the concept of rurality in the discursive tenor of various development programs and contrast it with richly contextualized empirical examples. Our findings suggest that not only is the concept of rurality becoming increasingly difficult to work with on an applicative level, but – in certain environments – it may also be conducive to the reproduction of human suffering.

  • Swedish Large-Scale Historical Maps as Sources for Archaeological Research : Examples from Gotlandic Maps from 1693-1705
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The Gotland Papers. - 9789186343071 ; , s. 475-490
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Historical maps are a vital and often used source in a variety of disciplines and applications in Sweden today. For a decade or two, they have moved into the GIS-community. A large scanning project by Lantmäteriverket will make most ofthe maps in Sweden available as raster images. In this article some different applications are presented, which goes beyond the traditional use of historical maps in GIS. These brief examples involve data mining, statistics, retrogressive analysis andhypothesis testing.
