- The purpose of this paper is to focus on approaches that could build a didactic framework for School-Age Educare Centres (SAECs). As a theoretical basis and a research field, didactics exists within many disciplines (e.g., education in natural sciences and preschool). This is not the case within the SAEC. While a lot of research has been devoted to subject didactics, there is a lack of research on didactics in SAECs, and the marginal research that exists shows a fragmented picture of what it could consist of. However, researchers in the field agree that didactics in SAECs is something else than subject didactics and differs from general didactics. Our aim in this paper is to suggest and discuss how a didactic framework in SAECs could be conceptualized with an intention in the near future to find the specific didactics that distinguishes the work in SAECs. The proposed design involves theory building/testing with a bottom-up perspective and various data collection methods. Because building a didactic theory for SAECs is the intention, the research process will take informed grounded theory (GT) as its methodological starting point. The empirical material will be related to the two dominant didactic frameworks: the German and the Anglo-Saxon. This framework will also be critically reviewed in relation to the activities in SAECs. The results will contribute important knowledge to the development of a relevant and useful didactic theory for SAECs. The practical implications are directly relevant to every stakeholder affected by the SAECs’ activities: policy actors, staff, students, and researchers. In the long term, we will be able to find a legitimate platform for didactics in SAECs, which will have concrete importance for professionals and researchers in particular.

- This paper presents leadership perspectives and leadership styles in the didactic room. The paper problematizes and develops new knowledge concerning the complex and often paradoxical circumstances that characterize teachers’ leadership. The aim is to develop new knowledge about teachers’ leadership perspectives and styles in the didactic room. Our literature review demonstrates a lack of an explicit and unifying concept that encompasses teachers’ various perspectives and behavioral styles in the didactic room. The meaning of the concept “perspective” precedes the implementation of an individual style of leadership by promoting alternative overviews that the teacher can use, depending on the context, situated activity/task, and student. Any style of leadership will then refer to a specific social behavior. Our result shows that using conscious didactic action skills, teachers can act more effectively and qualitatively better approach new and unpredictable problem situations.

- Vocational programs are facing educational challenges. Many students leave secondary school in Sweden without completed grades, and this is problematic in many ways, e.g. in terms of equivalence and skill segregation. This study tries to see learning through students’ eyes and examined learning styles in six different vocational programs. The research questions have addressed which general learning styles traits dominates and which differentiates. The study involved 244 students. The Productivity Environmental Preference Survey (PEPS) learning styles assessment was used to identify 17 different traits. Sex groups were compared with descriptive statistics and analyzed by using F-test and analysis of variance, ANOVA. The tendencies were low motivation and conformity, a high need for structure and routine, multimodal dominance, and a need for intake and movements. The most productive time of day was in the afternoon. The statistical analysis revealed that six of 17 elements differed; light, temperature, conformity, persistence, intake, time-of –day (early morning and morning). This study shows similarities and differences concerning learning styles preferences in vocational program, which can be a basis for further insights in didactics issues. This study highlights the importance of finding pedagogical model that is suitable for vocational education, expanded educational strategies and in-depth didactic discussions. The results are valuable for people involved in the planning of vocational education and for the students themselves.

- In this study, we focussed on designing and evaluating a learning tool for the research process in higher education. Mastering the research process seems to be a bottleneck within the academy. Therefore, there is a great need to offer students other ways to learn this skill in addition to books and lectures. The MethodViz tool supports ubiquitous aspects of the research process in their scientific works higher education students follow. Moreover, the tool facilitates and structures the process interactively. In this paper, we describe the creation process of the artefact and examine the characteristics and scope of MethodViz alongside the traits and ideas of design science research. The evaluation’s results are encouraging and show that MethodViz has the potential to improve students’ learning achievements.

- Research directed at institutions focusing on diverse aspects of childreńs social and cognitive development outside school is a growing field. This article discusses Swedish school-age educare centres for children between 6–12 years of age before and after school. These centres are regarded as important for young children’s learning and care, although national statistics and an increasing amount of research shows that the preconditions for fulfilling these assignments are not favourable. This case study is based on Giddens’ theory of structuration and studies staff at three educare centres using a mix of different methods, including interviews, observations and vignettes. The staff assert that their work is regarded as subordinate to that of class teachers. This is demonstrated by distant management, a fragmented working day and a lack of time for planning the work. These conditions are seen to affect the quality and the staff´s opportunities to fulfil their mission.

- Syftet med den här studien är att bidra med kunskap om svenska rektorers upp-fattningar om didaktikbegreppets innebörd i fritidshemmet. En tidigare studie har visat särskiljande uppfattningar hos rektorer i relation till andra aktörer inom fritidshemmet, varför behovet av en fördjupad studie av rektorers uppfattningar är relevant. Det empiriska materialet består av en webenkät besvarad av 51 rektorer omfattande öppna och slutna svarsalternativ. Det har analyserats med inferentiell och deskriptiv statistik samt innehållsanalys. Studien synliggör upp-fattningar rektorer har om innehållet i begreppet didaktik i fritidshem. Rektorer anser sig generellt sett ha goda kunskaper om begreppet, men deras beskrivningar av begreppet är relativt knapphändiga. Inga tydliga samband föreligger mellan rektorernas svar och deras ålder eller år inom yrket. Vidare visar resultatet få skill-nader mellan dem som anser sig ha goda kunskaper inom fältet och dem som an-ser sig ha mindre kunskaper. Den kvalitativa analysen av svaren genererade några olika teman om didaktik och undervisning med viss anknytning till didaktisk teoribildning. Slutsatsen är dock att rektorerna inte beskriver begreppet didaktik ingående eller mångfacetterat, men att det i viss mån sammanlänkas med under-visning, särskilt i skolmiljön. Gällande undervisningsbegreppet gör rektorerna mer explicita uttalanden, men dessa kan tolkas som tydligare länkade till rektors-rollen i grundskolan. Inga spår av didaktik i relation till fritidshemmets omsorgs-perspektiv kan skönjas. Ska rektorer leda verksamheten i fritidshemmet på ett framgångsrikt sätt krävs en samsyn mellan dem och personalen om hur upp-dragen ska förstås och genomföras. Där spelar didaktiken en avgörande roll. Av detta skäl ser vi behovet av intensifierad forskning på fältet som stort.

- In order to examine regional educational development in combination with school development in Sweden during the last 40 years, this paper presents the results of an integrative, systematic literature review. The study shows a sprawling result: a dozen regional projects mostly directed to higher education, little debate, mostly descriptive studies, weakly evaluated governmental educational initiatives, and hardly any research or debates ranging from preschool through the whole school system. However, the most important implication is the need for reanalysis of the values that permeate the entire school system and the community of life values in rural areas.
