  • The Use of Professional Development to Enhance Education of Students with Autism : A Systematic Review
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Education Sciences. - : MDPI AG. - 2227-7102. ; 13:9, s. 1-13
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study objective in this article was to present the state-of-the-art on teachers’ professional development to enhance educational quality for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in primary and secondary education. A systematic review was conducted, following the PRISMA guidelines. Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies were eligible for inclusion. Fifteen studies were identified and summarized. To identify the eligibility criteria, we applied the SPIDER framework. Quality appraisal was applied using the MMAT. A thematic summary and narrative synthesis of the included studies was conducted to establish a comprehensive understanding of what makes a difference in preparation for teachers of autistic students. Two key factors were found regarding the design of professional development for teachers to enhance their skills to teach autistic students. Firstly, teachers’ developed autism-specific knowledge, and secondly, the need for practice-based training with a focus on the challenges teachers meet at their own schools. Multiple ways of addressing teachers’ need for professional development regarding autistic students may further contribute to inclusive values and actions.

  • Body image in physical education : a narrative review
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sport, Education and Society. - : Routledge. - 1357-3322 .- 1470-1243. ; 28:7, s. 824-841
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Physical education (PE) has significant potential to shape how young people experience their own and others’ bodies. This potential has not always been realized in positive ways and some research suggests that experiences in PE have contributed to young people’s dissatisfaction with their appearances. The broad aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive understanding of body image as a pedagogical issue within PE. A narrative approach to the review is adopted that enables us to summarize, compare, explain and interpret various types of research relevant to our aim. From the databases ERIC, SCOPUS and PsycInfo, 25 articles were identified that deal with either body image in typical PE lessons or researcher-led attempts to influence students’ body image (what we have termed ‘pedagogic interventions’). Main findings are that: (1) PE has been presented as both part of the cause and a potential site of intervention to the problem of negative body image; (2) Researchers have based pedagogic interventions on four types of guiding principles; and (3) Researchers have made an array of recommendations for practitioners relating to gender, time, professional development and the characteristics of the pedagogical interventions. Findings are discussed in relation to broader research on body image in society and in PE with a focus on how the findings might inform further scientific practice.

  • The relation between teaching physical education and discourses on body weight : an integrative review of research
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Curriculum Studies in Health and Physical Education. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2574-2981 .- 2574-299X. ; 12:3, s. 287-305
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this integrative review of research is to contribute to knowledge about the relation between teaching physical education (PE) and discourses of body weight. The review consists of summarising and synthesising features focusing on how discourses on the relation between teaching PE and body weight in scientific literature in different ways shape the idea of the role of PE. The results of the review reveal that the purposes, content, and forms for teaching PE constitute three discourses of teaching PE in relation to body weight: (i) a risk discourse, (ii) a critical obesity discourse, and (iii) a pluralistic discourse. From these discourses, five different roles of PE are identified; (i) Solving obesity and inactivity, (ii) Including overweight pupils, (iii) Rejecting an obesity epidemic, (iv) Supporting and understanding overweight pupils, and (v) Transforming PE in relation to a plurality of perspectives on body weight. As a consequence, we urge practitioners to take a reflective distance towards the purpose, content, and the pedagogies they are employing in relation to discourses on body weight in order to make informed decisions regarding PE curricula.

  • Integrated teaching for vocational knowing : A systematic review of research on nursing-related vocational education and training
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Vocational Education and Training. - : Nordic network for vocational education and training. - 2242-458X. ; 9:2, s. 19-50
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim for this review was to systematize, describe and critically analyse previous research concerning school-based integrated teaching for vocational knowing in nursingrelated training in upper secondary and in higher level education. Searches were conducted in four databases, two specifically for Swedish hits, and two for international hits. Also, search was made in a Nordic journal on vocational education and training. References in included studies were also assessed for further inclusion of studies. Altogether, 14 studies were included and assessed for quality and coherence with GRADE CERQual. Review findings comprised three types of integrated teaching, through embeddedness or streaks, problem-based learning, and between school and workplace; vocational knowing relating to a professional and academic context; and methodological significance for the vocational knowing highlighted in the studies. In conclusion, the methodological approach typically used in the primary studies related to a quantitative approach, which was also discerned as quality measure. The primary studies brought forward a partial understanding of integrated teaching and vocational knowing, which is dependent on the methodological approach. In order to enhance understanding about the research topic, there is a need for more studies on integrated teaching utilizing a qualitative approach.

  • Training future generations to deliver evidence-based conservation and ecosystem management
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ecological Solutions and Evidence. - : Wiley. - 2688-8319. ; 2:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1. To be effective, the next generation of conservation practitioners and managers need to be critical thinkers with a deep understanding of how to make evidence-based decisions and of the value of evidence synthesis.2. If, as educators, we do not make these priorities a core part of what we teach, we are failing to prepare our students to make an effective contribution to conservation practice.3. To help overcome this problem we have created open access online teaching materials in multiple languages that are stored in Applied Ecology Resources. So far, 117 educators from 23 countries have acknowledged the importance of this and are already teaching or about to teach skills in appraising or using evidence in conservation decision-making. This includes 145 undergraduate, postgraduate or professional development courses.4. We call for wider teaching of the tools and skills that facilitate evidence-based conservation and also suggest that providing online teaching materials in multiple languages could be beneficial for improving global understanding of other subject areas.

  • På spaning efter fritidshemmets didaktik
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Acta Didactica Norden. - : University of Oslo Library. - 2535-8219. ; 16

  • A systematic review of research on laboratory work in secondary school
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Studies in science education. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis. - 0305-7267 .- 1940-8412. ; 59:2, s. 245-285
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an integrative mixed-methods systematic review of research on laboratory work in secondary-school science education from 1996 to 2019. The aim of the study is to identify important aspects of how to successfully make use of laboratory work as a science-teaching strategy in secondary schools. By engaging teachers, our study uses a demand-driven approach where the users of evidence participate in setting the scope. Of a sample of 11,771 studies, 39 were selected for the integrative analysis. The result is structured around three theoretical frameworks to inform our understanding of what characterises laboratory work, (1) with the aim of developing students’ learning of science, (2) with the aim of developing students’ learning to do science (science practices), and (3) regarding the level of inquiry that facilitates aims 1 and 2. The results are discussed in the light of previous research reviews, and recommendations for future research are suggested.

  • Framing for Success : Governance of Swedish School Mathematics, 1980–1995
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Educational History. - Umeå : Umeå University Library. - 2001-7766 .- 2001-9076. ; 7:1, s. 3-32
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the design of the mathematics curriculum applied in Sweden between 1980 and 1995 and how this design affected student results between two international tests, SIMS1980 and TIMSS1995. During this period, the results in mathematics improved on a general level, but in some topics it did not. The results increased significantly in arithmetic, but very little in algebra. I investigate in what respect the arithmetic and algebra curricula were designed differently. The analysed materials are syllabus, commentary material, tests, and textbooks. The analysis is based on Bernstein’s theory on classification and framing. The main conclusion is that strong framing in the curriculum can be associated with better student results in TIMSS and evidence for a causal relation between these entities is presented. On the basis of my finding, I raise a critical question about the change in governing policy that took place in Sweden between 1975 and 2000.

  • Homework – is there a connection with classroom assessment? A review from Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Educational research (Windsor. Print). - : Informa UK Limited. - 0013-1881 .- 1469-5847. ; 55:4, s. 325-346
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The growing interest among researchers concerning how to use assessment to enhance students' learning as well as to improve instruction provided the impetus for this review of teachers' assessment activities related to homework.Purpose and method: The purpose was to bring together and critically examine the evidence in a way that illuminates research findings firstly on homework related to formative assessment, and secondly to relate research findings on homework to teachers' classroom work to formative assessment, and finally to complement existing international research by examining findings from Sweden. International peer-reviewed articles as well as doctoral theses, reviewed anthologies, encyclopaedias, international reports, and handbooks were used.Findings and conclusions: Findings show a gap in the research field of homework, especially in relation to formative assessment. Various research findings point to the importance of exploring the quality of homework. Research on how to assign and assess homework must consider the problems and conflicts that homework causes students, parents and teachers. Research is also needed to illuminate issues related to conditions for equity in relation to homework and feedback.

  • Eurocentrism in Steiner/Waldorf education – a literature review and postcolonial critique
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: RoSE. - 1891-6511. ; 14:1, s. 39-62
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Steiner/Waldorf education has seen an increasing discussion regarding Eurocentrism, especially with regards to the so-called theory of cultural epochs that can be found in anthroposophy. This paper is an attempt to present a complete review of current research and the various perspectives represented in it. The framework is, roughly, postcolonial theory and its critique of Eurocentrism masking itself as universalizations as well as essentialisms. The review is structured into four categories: research on postcolonial frameworks and globalization; research on subject-didactics from a decolonial perspective, especially history and language; research on integrating Steiner education with indigenous education and intercultural education; and critical studies regarding the concept of the human being in Steiner education. It concludes with a discussion of the commonalities and differences between the various perspectives represented as well as some thoughts on themes left large unexplored.
