  • Lessons Learned from Teaching Nursing Students about Equality, Equity, Human Rights, and Forced Migration through Roleplay in an Inclusive Classroom
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - Basel : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 12:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive education, sustainable development, and core nursing values all share common goals of promoting diversity, equity, social justice, and inclusion. However, prevailing norms of exclusion may shape health systems and healthcare workers’ attitudes and threaten inclusive patient care. Ongoing global conflicts and violence resulting in growing patient diversity in terms of ethnicity and migration status have led to questions regarding healthcare systems’ preparedness for inclusive nursing. Diversity-rich classrooms and collaborative learning methods, like role play, are inclusive strategies that may be useful in nursing education. The purpose of this paper is to present lessons learned from incorporating role play about forced migration in inclusive nursing classrooms. Various diversity-rich nursing student groups participated in a two-hour role play on forced migration facilitated by youth volunteers from the Swedish Red Cross Society between 2017 and 2019. This study is based on the amplified analysis of qualitative data materials, in the form of notes and summarized feedbacks, obtained from evaluating the role play as a teaching-learning activity. Three themes were identified, specifically, knowledge exchange, existential reflections, and empathy evoked. Findings suggest that working collaboratively in an inclusive environment may improve nursing students’ understanding of the vulnerabilities created by forced migration and to be better prepared for promoting social justice for this group in health care settings.

  • Collaborative Media in Educational Settings : Teaching as a Design Profession
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Design Education. - : Common Ground Publishing. - 2325-128X .- 2325-1298. ; 13:2, s. 1-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports on a participatory design project conducted with K-12 schools in the US and Sweden to create an international collaboration on Marine Biology using video production as a tool for learning and representation. The aim of the project was to explore teachers' challenges and strategies due to digitalization and new curricular demands through a lens of sociocultural perspectives. Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) was used to understand and support participating teachers' development as well as the design process. Using the CHAT model as a design tool enabled teachers to grasp a complex learning environment and frame contradictions and tensions in the activity. Challenges in terms of curricular demands and media literacy could be identified and addressed as part of interacting activity systems, and the process enabled expansion of knowledge and ideas for both design and future work practice.

  • Att hantera vardagsnära utmaningar mot ett socialt system : Ur blivande slöjdlärares perspektiv
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nordic Studies in Education. - : Universitetsforlaget. - 1891-5914 .- 1891-5949. ; 39:3, s. 228-243
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a case study, 36 future sloyd teachers, who have taken a leading role in working with pedagogical development, describe their experience of pupils' unmotivated and disruptive behaviour. It was revealed that the teachers were disturbed by pupils whose risk-filled behaviour was aggressive or destructive, as well as by pupils who were reluctant to take risks in their constructive or passive behaviour. It was also revealed that these types of behaviour occurred periodically or permanently, which in different ways challenged the sloyd lesson as a social system. From an ecological perspective, the teachers employed various strategies in their attempts to maintain a balance, social sustainability in the classroom. They had various strategies for directly handling challenges, such as attempting to keep the pupils in the classroom, and other strategies for indirectly handling challenges outside the classroom. In this way, the teachers hindered, stopped, brought back or removed pupils who were unmotivated or disruptive. It was also revealed that dealing with these challenges was energy- and time-consuming and that it shifted focus from the teachers' didactic management of sloyd class.

  • Performativity as pretence : A study of testing practices in a compulsory school in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Ethnography and Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-7823 .- 1745-7831. ; 7:3, s. 297-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our aim in this paper is to analyse the impact of the standardised test on classroom practices in grade 5 in a compulsory school in western Sweden. In our analysis, the use of the concept of pedagogic device provides a framework for understanding hos high-stakes, standardised testing regulates classroom discourse and teachers' and students' classroom behaviours. The study was conducted during 2006-2007 as part of a larger ethnographic inquiry. The results reveal how the demands of the test impact upon the daily work in the classroom. In the neo-liberal apporach to governance, stnadardised tests have become an important measure of quality. School practices run the risk of being viewed as valuable, only relative to the performance of teachers and students at the individueal level. This view shifts the focus from a discussion about a societal responsibility to ensure that all children have equitable access to education, to a debate centred on the individualäs responsibility to perform. The analysis reveals that the test was not carried out as intended. However, both teacher and the students respond to the test situation and the results as if it had been and as if the test really mattered.

  • Home economics teachers’ perceptions of facilitating and inhibiting factors when teaching sustainable food consumption
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : AMER SOC ENGINEERING EDUCATION, 1818 N STREET, NW SUITE 600, WASHINGTON, DC 20036 USA. - 2071-1050. ; 10:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present study is to explore experienced home economics (HE) teachers’ perceptions of the influencing factors that condition their teaching opportunities regarding the revised mission to implement sustainable development (SD) in food-related education. Five purposefully selected HE teachers participated in individual, semi-structured, in-depth interviews. The recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using qualitative thematic analysis. The results show a shared view of in the importance of educating the next generation of sustainable food consumers. Teachers returned to specific influencing factors that conditioned their opportunities to implement a perspective of SD in HE food education. This generated four themes: (1) Unscheduled foodwork in preparing sustainable food education, (2) opportunities to link everyday food choices with larger food system issues, (3) access to sustainable supportive food products and materials, and (4) a school environment in support of food-related teaching. The teachers outlined a number of local and national factors perceived to inhibit access to facilitators and expressed a concern for pupils’ opportunities for quality assurance and goal achievement. The suggested influencing factors could serve as propositions for further investigations in the continued work of both resource reinforcements as well as of developing a SD perspective in food-related HE education. © 2018 by the author.

  • Middle school pupils’ understanding of bacteria and virus in the aftermath of Covid-19
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Tepe 2023. ; , s. 20-20
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the past couple of years, the COVID-19 pandemic had an immense impact on lives of individuals and societies around the world. The main purpose of this study was to delineate Swedish middle school (10-12-year-old) pupils’ understanding of bacteria and virus thereby illustrating the impact of the pandemic at schools and in society. Data were collected by semistructured, individual interviews and by asking participants to draw images of bacteria and virus. Thematic coding and content analysis of children’s annotated drawings were used. The morphology of the microorganisms from the drawings was analyzed by the deductively induced themes shape, surface texture and internal feature. Viruses were frequently considered larger than bacteria, but it was also common to view them being similar in size. Interrelationships between bacteria and viruses were expressed like a hierarchy with a “superior” microorganism, and as bacteria could generate viruses. Pupils drew microorganisms as cell-like and never portrayed them as animals or with anthropomorphic features, as reported in earlier research. Metaphoric aspects of drawings of viruses were summarized as being “bacteriophage-like” or “corona-like”. A virus was considered to induce the more grievous disease. Pupils seldomly tethered a specific virus to a specific infectious disease, and often named both "corona". However, when they did so, virus was tethered to flu and COVID-19 and bacteria to cold and plague. One ostensible suggestion for learning improvement would be to pay more attention to differences between microorganisms and their liaison to specific infectious diseases. This liaison is suggested as an important concept for developing contagion literacy. Furthermore, we recommend pathogenic bacteria and viruses to be explicitly taught in biology education at middle school or earlier in balance with knowledge about essential microorganisms. Finally, we propose the measures above to be integrated into the biology education of teacher´s education.

  • Beyond Individual Matters : Sloyd Teachers posts in a Facebook group
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Techneserien. - Helsinki, Finland : Nordiskt Forum for Forskning och Utvecklingsarbete inom Utbildning i Slöjd. - 1238-951X. ; 29:2, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reason for conducting this study was two-fold: sloyd teachers have over a period of time expressed a need for fellow sloyd teachers at their workplace in the beginning of 2016 felt that there had been an “attack” on their subject. Using thematic analysis, we studied 334 posts written by participants in a Facebook group called Nationellt Resurscentrum (National Resource Centre) during an “ordinary” month, April 2016. The results show that the posts were mainly concerned with the exchange of teaching experiences, functional discussions concerning matters such as internal and external conditions related to sloyd as a school subject, and information sharing related to the teachers’ own continuing professional development, such as invitations to specific lectures. In terms of community of practice theory, the results of this study can be interpreted as demonstrating that this specific Facebook group strengthens the sloyd teacher community and allows them to initiate and assert ownership of discussions related to their profession. The result also shows that posts in this specific Facebook group made it possible for the members to transform individual competencies into a collectively possessed skills “toolbox” beyond individual matters

  • Writing for life? : A case study of affordances of writing in four L1 upper secondary classrooms
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: L1-Educational Studies in Language and Literature. - 1567-6617 .- 1573-1731. ; 15:SpecialIssue, s. 1-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the period of 1994-2011 all programmes in Swedish upper secondary school comprised a set of core subjects with the aim to entail equity on the policy level. However, a division between programmes still prevailed on the school level, particularly in the core subject L1 Swedish. The main purpose of this study has been to explore how the teaching of writing in two academic and two vocational programmes differs, which writing repertoires are developed and how writing is assessed. The study is part of a long-term ethnography of writing in upper secondary school (Andersson Varga, 2014). The data produced during the two-year field study contain field notes from writing lessons, lesson observations and talks with four teachers, as well as recorded and transcribed, semi-structured teacher and student interviews, instructions on writing tasks, student texts and teachers’ responses to student texts. This article focus-ses on the preparation for the National Test, the afforded assignments, the realisations of the student texts and the assessment. The teachers in the four programmes handle the national syllabus in relation to the students, resulting in four different curricula in the classroom. Thus, issues of inequity, disparities in curricula as well as different expectations on students, depending on programme, became obvious. To understand the processes of social reproduction, we use Bernstein’s sociology of education (1996, 2000) and the concept of the pedagogic device and pedagogic identity. However, we also show one example of interruption (Singh, 2013) in one of the four classrooms. Thus, the main results demonstrate how one particular teacher brings about change to a group of working class girls. © 2015 International Association for the Improvement of Mother tongue Education.

  • Integration into and through sports? Sport-activities for migrant children and youths
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal for Sport and Society. - Abingdon : Informa UK Limited. - 1613-8171 .- 2380-5919. ; 18:1, s. 64-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Migration over recent years has meant that issues of integration are high on the agenda. Sports clubs are considered important settings for promoting integration. This notion is reflected in national and international policy documents. This study focuses on how leaders in a non-profit sports club, operating in a community where a majority have a migrant background, work with the stated goal of promoting integration. The aim of this study is to explore how leaders interpret and negotiate their explicit assignment to promote integration and counteract segregation and how they try to implement strategies to reach these goals and also to explore how participants experience the sports club's activities related to aspects of integration. The study takes an ethnographic approach with participant observations and interviews. The results indicate that the leaders' work in terms of integration was related to negotiating diversity, norms, rules and language. Both leaders and participants highlight how the activities enhance feelings of trust despite racism in society and how the leaders worked to create relationships and to make the activities into safe spaces. Whether this work contributes to integration is, however, debatable and the leaders emphasised inclusion as their main strategy and goal.

  • Making sense of health in PE : conceptions of health among Swedish physical education teachers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Health Education. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0965-4283 .- 1758-714X. ; 123:2, s. 79-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeOver the last couple of decades, health has become a central part of the subject content in physical education (PE) curricula in many countries. As a result, issues of health have been foregrounded much more clearly in the teaching of PE. The aim of this study was to explore how Swedish PE teachers make sense of health in relation to their teaching practices. This was done through investigating conceptions and theories about health in the teachers' descriptions of their teaching practices.Design/methodology/approachThe data analyzed in this paper were collected through focus group and individual interviews with PE teachers in the grades 7-9 within compulsory schools in Sweden. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis.FindingsFour dominant themes were identified in the data: 1) Health as a healthy attitude, 2) Health as a functional ability, 3) Health as fitness, 4) Health as mental wellbeing. There is a clear impact from healthism and obesity discourses on the teachers' accounts of health, but there is also an impact from holistic views and approaches to health. The authors contend that teachers should be explicit in what they mean by health in relation to what they teach, how they teach and why they teach health in a certain way.Originality/valueThe knowledge produced by this study is crucial since teachers' assumptions regarding health affect the subject content (what), the pedagogies (how), as well as the reasons (why) they teach health and therefore what students learn regarding health.
