  • Två musikpedagogiska fält : en studie om kommunal musikskola och musiklärarutbildning
  • 1995
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The thesis consists of two parts. One is directed towards municipal music schools, and one deals with music teacher education at university level. The purpose was to investigate the recruitment to these two educations, and to describe and explain how different student groups perceived and used their education. Five empirical studies have been accomplished, and central questions were: which deliberate and non-deliberate choices of musical activities are made by children and music students, and how are these choices affected by socio-economical, geographical and gender prerequisites.Theoretically, the first part of the thesis was based on the educational sociology of Pierre Bourdieu and on previous empirical studies in music pedagogy. The first empirical study was directed towards the recruitment of pupils to the municipal music school in Piteå (n=1085). The study showed that two out of three pupils are girls. Furthermore, it was twice as common among children of higher employees and university graduates to study at the music school than among children with working class backgrounds. The second empirical study was an interview with children, 12-13 years of age (n=369). The results indicated that boys and girls understand and use music and music education in significantly different ways. Furthermore, differences related to socioeconomic background, musical background and residential area were also shown. The second part of the thesis begins with a summary of the origin and scientific basis of Swedish music pedagogy, followed by an investigation regarding recruitment to the music teacher education at the School of Music in Piteå (n=177). The investigation indicated that recruitment is socially biased, similar to that of the municipal music school. One third of the music teacher students were recruited from families where one of the parents worked as a teacher. One out of three students came from homes where religion was an important part of family life. In an interview-study with 60 music teacher students, differences related to gender and educational orientation arose in how students looked upon and used their education. The study showed two attitudes to music and music education, which were linked to the following concepts: musician code and teacher code. In connection with these concepts, three action strategies could be identified: navigation, revolt, and adjustment. These strategies were interpreted as an expression of the tension between the demands of the education and the individuals' wish to have his or her interests and needs met. The dissertation concludes with a project called "Self-formulated goals and self-evaluation in music education" and a short forward-looking discussion pertaining to questions that have been generated throughout the entire research process.

  • Utbildare i dans : perspektiv på formeringen av en pedagogutbildning 1939-1965
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis describes and theoretically illuminates perspectives on the formation of a dance teacher education in Sweden during the period 1939–65. The process is explored mainly through the visions and activities of Svenska Danspedagogförbundet, SDF (The Swedish Dance Teacher Association). Particular attention is paid to specific instances which eventually could lead toward the establishment of a government-sponsored educational program. The work is both chronologically and thematically arranged in order to enlighten time specific turning points that also encompass three major themes which can be seen as initiation, expansion and establishment. These themes summarize the problems my investigation zeroes in on. The chronological framework is bounded by the foundation of the SDF in 1939, and the first year of classes at the new pedagogical section of Koreografiska Institutet, KI (the Choreographic Institute) in 1964–65. The study focuses on the intersection of aesthetic, educational, and professional transformative processes which also includes the international field of dance. More specifically the study explores the initial process gathering practitioners in a professional association, which could lead both to unionization and the establishment of an education. As far as professional and educational questions are concerned the process toward establishing a system of dance teacher education followed a general growth and organization of the Swedish educational system as a whole. The educational alternatives which evolved between 1959 and 1965 corresponded to both internal and external needs, especially by exposing the lack of a competent corps of teachers. The study examines how these alternatives collaborated and competed with one another for a relatively short time. Though lines of contention were drawn between leading actors this work also illuminates how the profession and the art itself acquired increased status in a broader cultural context. The vision of modernizing the art of dance along with its pedagogy is shown to be as much about pedagogic matters as about aesthetic ideals. Regardless of actual differences and approaches to aesthetics and education the process was guided toward the establishment of a dance teacher education.

  • "Vad månde blifva af dessa barnen?" : En studie av David Björlings pedagogik och dess bakgrund i äldre sångundervisningstraditioner
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The dissertation's title is: "What is to become of these children?", a study of David Björling's way of teaching and the background to it in older traditions of teaching singing.During the first decades of the 1900s, David Björling formed a singing school for children with his sons. Teaching started at a sensationally early age. David Björling's methods were controversial, and were questioned. David Björling himself asserted that his methods of teaching the children were serious and would give good results, and at the same time he emphasised that teaching singing was part of the musical upbringing he wanted to give his children. The aim of the dissertation is to deduce the methods David Björling applied to his sons. In the study, I investigate how David Björling taught, how it was recieved and which vocal pedagogical and didactic traditions David Björling can have been inspired by in his teaching of singing. The presentation is based on the tradition of hermeneutical interpretation and first and foremost on Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics. The results show that the school was formed in accordance with the pedagogical model we understand today as the Suzuki method. Björling is also found to have been inspired by theories of teaching children singing that were proposed at the beginning of the last century. According to the analysis of the results, David Björling is found to have roots in an older Italian tradition. The results point to recurring similarities between David Björling's methods and the Lamperti school's didactic principles.

  • A total institution within reach? : Music education at Framnäs Folk High School in the 1950s and 60s
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Finnish Journal of Music Education. - 1239-3908. ; 14:2, s. 60-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to increase understanding of what music studies at a folk high school could mean to individual students, and to discuss what Framnäs Folk High School meant to music education opportunities in northern Sweden. The 1950s and 1960s are primarily addressed, in other words, the period from the foundation of Framnäs up until the major changes that took place in the 1970s. How were students recruited, and what did the new study opportunities mean to prospective students? What was the study situation like at the school and what was the social environment like? What role did music play in the study environment and what view towards music found expression at Framnäs Folk High School? Terms used in the analysis include “total institution” (Goffman 1961) and “reach” (Kåks & Westholm 1998). The argument in the article uses analysis of archived material from Framnäs Folk High School, published literature and interviews with former students. In the study, it is shown that Framnäs Folk High School’s music education was within mental reach for many who would hardly have seen the Royal School of Music in Stockholm, at the time Sweden’s northernmost institution for advanced music, as an alternative. The social environment at Framnäs included elements of control and discipline, as well as community and consideration. Something that distinguishes the folk high school environment from total institutions in Goffman’s sense of the term is the camaraderie between teachers and students and the fundamental freedom. The view towards music and culture that characterised the music education at Framnäs may be described as admiring appropriation of the bourgeois or classical music heritage.

  • Developing distance music education in arctic Scandinavia : electric guitar teaching and master classes
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Music Education Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1461-3808 .- 1469-9893. ; 14:4, s. 448-456
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article was to present the project Vi r Music, with a focus on electric guitar teaching (Case 1) and master classes (Case 2). What were the benefits and shortcomings in the two cases and how did online teaching differ from face-to-face teaching? A guitar teacher with a specialisation in jazz music introduced distance teaching to three of his students. Under supervision the students taught upper-secondary students living 290 km from the university. The guitar lessons were held with the use of Skype. In the project, 11 distance master classes were also studied. The devices used were a video-conference system, external microphones and speakers, and 50–52′′ TV screens. The methods for data collection in both cases were above all qualitative interviews with teachers and students and to some degree observation of the teaching sessions. The overall impression from the study was that teachers and students seemed to consider the online teaching in the project a positive experience. The informants looked upon the distance-learning situation as a fruitful complement to face-to-face teaching. Because of the time delay, the most difficult part of the online teaching was playing together or marking the rhythm. The results suggested that video-conference teaching is more intensive than face-to-face teaching and requires both thorough planning and readiness to improvise during the lesson.
