  • Underdogs, rebels, and heroes : Crime narratives as a resource for doing masculinity in autobiographies
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - Huddinge : Sociologisk Forskning, Swedish Sociological Association. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 57:3-4, s. 289-311
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article shows how autobiographies of famous, socially well-established men (re)produce hegemonic masculinity through narratives of offending; how masculine performance is age graded; and that masculinity constructions are accomplished both via what is said and what is not said. The autobiographies of the footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović, the former high jumper Patrik Sjöberg and Sweden’s most famous criminologist, Professor Leif G.W. Persson, are analysed. Common to all three is that they openly describe a variety of crimes they have committed. These three men are highly respected in Sweden and none of them is considered as “a criminal” in general opinion. This article shows that crime can be a resource for doing masculinity even for famous, successful and highly respected men. The crime narratives in these autobiographies tell us something about the culturally accepted representations of masculinity that may not just pass as possible, but even as desirable.

  • Is 'legal empowerment of the poor' relevant to people with disabilities in developing countries? An empirical and normative review.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Global Health Action. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1654-9880 .- 1654-9716. ; 6:22854, s. 1-15
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background : Legal empowerment of the poor is highly relevant to public health as it aims to relieve income poverty, a main determinant of health. The Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor (CLEP) has proposed legal empowerment measures in the following four domains: access to justice and the rule of law, property, labor, and business rights. Despite being overrepresented among the poor, CLEP has not explicitly considered the situation of people with disabilities. Objectives : To examine the empirical evidence for the relevance of the CLEP legal empowerment measures to people with disabilities in low- and lower middle-income countries, and to evaluate the extent to which the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) addresses those measures. Methods : Critical literature review of empirical studies and a checklist assessment of the CRPD. Results : Fourteen included articles confirm that people with disabilities experience problems in the domains of access to justice and the rule of law, labor rights, and business rights. No texts on property rights were found. Evidence for the effectiveness of the proposed measures is insufficient. Overall, the CRPD fully or partially supports two-thirds of the proposed measures (seven out of nine measures for access to justice and the rule of law, none of the five measures for property rights, all seven measures for labor rights, and six out of nine measures for business rights). Conclusions : Although most of the domains of the CLEP legal empowerment measures are relevant to people with disabilities from both empirical and normative perspectives, it is uncertain whether the devised measures are of immediate relevance to them. Further research is warranted in this regard.

    • Negotiating experience in the court How do judges assess witness credibility, and how do they proceed to reach sustainable conclusions in a criminal court? This article is based on discussions in four focus groups with lay judges in Swedish district courts. In criminal court trials, a version of an event is generally reinforced if it is confirmed by witnesses. However, if their narratives are too similar, none of them is found trustworthy. The focus group participants agreed that if witnesses were suspected of having discussed their individual experiences of an event and accommodated them into a common story, their testimonies were not considered credible.  While testimonies should ideally be untainted by other people’s impressions and opinions, other rules govern the truth of the court. The lay judges appreciated their deliberations, including negotiations on impressions and memories of the trial and they sometimes adjusted their perceptions in the light of information provided by other members of the court. However, if the lay judges are regarded as witnesses of what takes place in the trial, this gives rise to a paradox: While witness negotiations on experiences are regarded as a means to construct a false or biased story, the same kind of interaction between the judges is considered necessary to establish a consensual truth of what actually happened. Key words: witness credibility, lay judges, testimony, court deliberations

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - Huddinge : Sveriges sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 59:1–2, s. 177-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The social meaning of children’s participation in family law proceedingsEver since the Convention of the Rights of the Child, we have seen a wide variety of interpre- tations on the meaning of “children’s participation.” A critical perspective, based on a social phenomenology, is here suggested to disclose the taken-for-grantedness implicit in both policy and theoretical accounts relating to the phenomenon of children’s participation. Within the situation of family law proceedings in Sweden, children’s participation will be explored in rela- tion to its intersubjective constitution in the social world and in the manifold of sub-worlds in which it appears. It is argued that a social phenomenological approach makes it possible to explicate what we mean by children’s participation in the context of policy within the situation of family law proceedings, and to thus open up for a way to approach this phenomenon based on critical reflection.

    • Youth Violence: The Discovery of a Social ProblemYouth crime in Swedish editorials 1950-1994 This article offers an analysis of how juvenile delinquency has been treated in editorials in Swedish newspapers between 1950-1994. It shows that the focus has shifted from property offences to violence. The shift is discussed from two perspectives; the objectivist and the constructionist. It is argued that the diminishing interest of the press in juvenile property offences since the beginning of the 1970´s corresponds to the pattern of recorded crime trends. From 1986 onwards, however, youth violence became a major topic in Sweden. Yet this cannot easily be explained by the objectivist approach alone. The constructionist approach seems to be a useful complement. The paper ends with a suggestion that a re-evualation of some parts of the crime statistics is needed. The emergence of youth violence as a social problem after 1986 has probably led to a higher propensity to report such acts. Therefore, statistics that are not dependent upon public reporting should be used when analysing the development of youth violence in Sweden.

    • Violence at work as a social problem. A study of the media coverage on workplace violence in Swedish trade union journals 1978-2004.The main purpose of this study was to find out the extent of the unions media coverage on workplace violence and the ways in which the topic was framed. The study shows that the reporting of violence in the workplace described in journals is on a stable level during the period 1978-98. However from the year 2000 and onwards, there is a clear increase in the attention. Four categories of workplace violence were used to identify and recognize different types of violence: intrusive-, consumer-, relationship- and organizational violence. This shows that much of the attention over time has shifted from intrusive violence to organizational violence and consumer violence. What seems to have happened is that workplace violence has become more than just robberies and assaults in the retail business. The stereotypical image of the criminal is challenged by non-traditional criminals like nurses, elderly people and companies. Certain groups, e g care workers, come to account for an increasing proportion of attention, both as perpetrators and victims of violence. This study is an important step in understanding the increased reports of workplace violence in Sweden.
