  • Digital Distance Education – A Longitudinal Exploration of Video Technology
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The context of this thesis is digital distance education. Distance education has developed from correspondence courses, based on letters sent by mail between student and teacher, to digital distance education with interactive video classes from anywhere, as long as a computer/tablet/smartphone and an Internet connection are available. The development of technology, particularly with the introduction of the Internet, has completely changed the possibilities for teaching, learning, interaction, and communication at a distance. Many technologies can be used in distance education, but this thesis aims to: Better understand the possibilities and limitations of video in digital distance higher education. The research has three elements of analysis: 1) video technology, 2) distance courses, and 3) distance teachers. Each allows a focus on how distance courses with video are designed and on teachers’ perspectives on the use of video in distance education. The first focus on course design is examined through two research questions. RQ1 asks, How is digital video used in distance higher education? When teachers design distance courses with digital video; a) which categories of video are used or not used? b) how much are these categories used? c) why are they used or not used? And d) how are they used? Complementing RQ1, RQ2 asks, How do course designers respond to the possibilities and limitations of video for distance higher education? Addressing the second focus of the thesis on teacher perspectives, RQ3 asks, What are the teacher’s attitudes and perceptions about the use of digital video in distance higher education? With a comprehensive literature review as a foundation, the results of this thesis include a classification system with two main categories; recorded and live video that is developed and used to orient an empirical investigation. The data for this investigation was collected through a national web-based questionnaire. Then, based on the survey, a specific higher education institution was selected for an interview study with teachers using video conferencing in distance courses in Teacher education. Interaction and communication are central concepts in this thesis, and the analytical lens combines the socio-cultural perspective and the theory of affordances. The results indicate that across types, video is mostly used as a supplement to other resources. Further, a correspondence is found concerning, on the one hand, teachers’ experience of distance education and participation in in-service training, and on the other hand, their use of video in teaching. In general, the most reported reasons why teachers do not use video are that it does not bring anything and takes too much time. Many of the constraints that teachers perceive are related to time; e.g. competition between an ambition to teach according to a student-centred approach but also a strong feeling of responsibility of delivering content to students. The technology of video has the affordances of mediating a teaching and learning environment similar to the one in the classroom, but conditions such as large groups or many students and the difficulty of perceiving non-verbal signals through video, affect the communication situation negatively and reduce possibilities of interaction. As a systematic study investigating the mainstream use of technology and media, this thesis contrasts with many other studies, which are often relatively small and local in nature, conducted by enthusiastic teachers investigating the use of one specific technology. The results show how the mainstream use of technologies such as video change conditions for distance teaching and influence how we think and interact with others and our environment.

  • Förhandling pågår : en studie av internationella skidförbundets (FIS) medialisering
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this thesis is to problematise and illustrate mediatisation of the International Ski Federation (FIS). To fulfil this purpose, I based my work on the following questions:1. What perceptions do sport journalists and those within the FIS have of the relationship between the FIS and the media? 2. How, and in which case where, within the FIS is it apparent that the FIS has been mediatised? 3. How does the FIS view media in its internal and external communication? 4. What is felt to be the reason behind the introduction of new rules and changes to rules in ski jumping and cross-country skiing?5. What form does mediatisation take in relation to competitions at the international elite level? I have employed several methods of analysis because my aim is to respond to the question in a number of ways. The result of this is that the studies are characterised by triangulation on a number of levels in my pursuit of high reliability. To achieve the purpose of this thesis and to provide a picture of the research situation, I present former research on the process of mediatisation in this thesis, which also includes theories on news values and media logic.Based on the results and on prior research, I have developed a model with functions to make visible how much a sport has been mediatised and how strongly it has been mediatised. More interesting still is that the perception is that the media also at times has power. Yet it need not be media influence that leads to a sport organisation changing its rules; it may simply be the perception of media influence. The results of the thesis confirm that the FIS is in a process of mediatisation in which there are ongoing negotiations between the FIS and the media – negotiations that are different in character and in which there are situations whereby both the FIS and the media gain something from the negotiation as well as whereby one is parasitic on the other. The FIS appears to be a sport organisation that is familiar with the media, meaning that the media is important to its work and something it must constantly relate to.  So that we in the future can continue to understand the development of sport and of what influences sport, I see the continuation of studying mediatisation in relation to sport as important.

  • Mobile Video Literacy : Negotiating the Use of a New Visual Technology
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Personal and Ubiquitous Computing. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1617-4909 .- 1617-4917. ; 18:3, s. 737-752
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we examine the practice of learning to produce video using a new visual technology. Drawing upon a design intervention at a science centre, where a group of teenagers tried a new prototype technology for live mobile video editing, we show how the participants struggle with both the content and the form of producing videos, i.e. what to display and how to do it in a comprehensible manner. We investigate the ways in which video literacy practices are negotiated as ongoing accomplishments, and explore the communicative and material resources relied upon by participants as they create videos. Our results show that the technology is instrumental in this achievement and that as participants begin to master the prototype, they start to focus more on the narrative aspects of communicating the storyline of a science centre exhibit. The participants are explicitly concerned with such issues as how to create a comprehensible storyline for an assumed audience, what camera angles to use, how to cut and other aspects of the production of a video. We consider these observed activities to be candidate steps in an emerging mobile video literacy trajectory that involves developing a capacity to document and argue by means of this specific medium.

  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 35:3-4, s. 171-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the late 90s critical debate and research on the media have gained wide attention. Media criticism and critique is becoming a central political, social and scientific issue. In the article the concept of media criticism is discussed. Media criticism is interpreted as public discourse assessing the media and media impact. Beyond a dialogue on media policy and media practice, criticism offers highly polarized and partly mystifying accounts of the media and its social and cultural impact. The heated debate on media is interpreted as part of a social struggle between different social institutions (markets, politics, science and media) and as different models for action and knowledge. New forms and arenas for media criticism are also suggested and discussed.

  • Microgrid communities: disclosing the path to future system-active communities
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Futures. - Göterborg : IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet AB. - 2666-1888. ; 4, s. 100079-100079
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To increase sustainability in future energy systems, both technical and social measures must be taken. Microgrid communities offer local balancing of supply and demand, while also integrating the community as an active part of the energy system. This study investigates two cases of microgrid communities; how they were realized and what wider effects they offered its communities and other stakeholders. The study shows that the microgrid collaboration between community and utility offers a new organizational division that can overcome the traditional locked-in position of the utility. This brings forward communities as system-active participants and a sustainably beneficial energy system for the future.

  • The argumentative genre in social media - a comparison of Wikipedia discussion pages between cultures and between topics
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The argumentative genre in social media – a comparison of Wikipedia discussion pages between cultures and between topics.Johansson, Sverker & Lindberg, YlvaThe crowdsourced encyclopediaWikipedia is the 6th most visited of all websites. Wikipedia articles are written in a social process with heated arguments on dedicated discussion pages, one for each Wikipedia article. As Myers (2010) observes, English-language Wikipedians employ traditional means to support their arguments, but also Wikipedia-specific argumentative criteria, such as Neutral Point of View, No Original Research and Verifiability; cf. Androutsopoulos (2006).The structure, openness and global scope of Wikipedia makes it feasible to extract large parallel  corpora of argumentative writing from many different cultures, debating many different topics. In the first stage of our project, we have done a quantitative study of Wikipedia arguments, comparing the volume of debate surrounding the same 1,000 articles on 25 different language versions of Wikipedia. With this data, we compare argumentation, both on the same topic between languages, and between topics in the same language. Preliminary results show that cultural differences in sheer discussion volume are small, but that some interesting patterns are present. In a second stage, we proceed with qualitative analysis of argumentative Wikipedia texts in selected languages. In the qualitative analysis we will present the intersection between standard and Wikipedia-specific argumentation, as well as the cultural transfer of Wikipedia argumentation between language versions. The results will contribute to our knowledge about how digital literacy is related to traditional literacy and how teachers can meet new demands on writing practices, by integrating social media (Baron 2010. • Application of Theory in Studies of Healthcare Built Environment Research
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Health Environments Research & Design Journal. - : SAGE Publications. - 1937-5867 .- 2167-5112. ; 13:3, s. 154-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We aimed to examine the nature and extent of theory application in studies of built environment attributes and impact on adults in healthcare facilities. Many varied theories are described when providing the rationale for research into built environments in healthcare. Uncertainty exists around the right theory to frame a research question, alignment with measurement tools, and whether healthcare setting makes a difference. This poses challenges to researchers seeking to build the evidence base for built environment design that benefits patients and staff. Our multidisciplinary review team scoped the literature to determine how theories are used to inform research investigating the impact of the built environment of healthcare on adults. When researchers recorded theory at development of the study question, in data collection, and in data analysis/interpretation, we called this explicitly theory-based application. Synthesis occurred using a narrative approach. Overall, we found 17 diverse theories named in studies. Explicitly theory-based use occurred with eight theories, comprising 47% of all theories used. Five theories were named more frequently in studies out of all theories identified. In 20% of studies, theory was not used explicitly during the research inquiry. We argue that researchers must continue to strive toward explicit use of theories, similar to development of other health interventions that employ multifactorial components.

  • Project outcome classification with imprecise criteria information
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Applied Decision Sciences. - 1755-8085 .- 1755-8077. ; 6:4, s. 372-387
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A case in which managers have to make project outcome classification decisions with uncertainty in independently related criteria values is considered in this paper. A multi-criteria decision model is developed in this paper by selecting methods which delved into data analysis to help managers make informed classification decisions. Uncertainty in the criteria values is resolved using linear programming which enables managers to know the profit outcome of their projects for efficient resource allocation. The classification scheme from the linear programming process is used as predefined classification inputs for use in the Utilities Additives Discriminants(UTADIS) method, which further produces a classification model. The analysis presented a no misclassification error in the predefined classifications from the linear programming and the classifications in the UTADIS method, thus further boosting the confidence managers can entrust in the resulting classification model.
