  • The Impact of the Organizing Vision on Mobile BI Adoption
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: DSS 2.0 – Supporting Decision Making with New Technologies. - 0922-6389. - 9781614993988 ; 261, s. 303-313
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mobile Business Intelligence (m-BI) enhances the capabilities of organizations to take decisions 'on-the-move'. M-BI emerged as an extension of BI and many companies have or are considering implementing it. Being an innovation, m-BI reflects an organizing vision, created by a broad community, which is prominent during the comprehension process of this innovation. Little is known how the organizing vision affects the decision to adopt a certain innovation, and moreover these studies are completely lacking within the m-BI area. A qualitative approach has been embraced and interviews with different organizations that have already decided to adopt m-BI have been conducted. This study revealed that industrial research reports, vendors marketing campaigns and success stories produced by the collaboration among vendors, analysts, journalist and early adopters have a strong influence on the early phases of the organizational decision-making process to adopt m-BI. Increasing internal and external legitimacy, reducing the risk to be left behind, gaining competitive advantage, following the footsteps of high-performing companies, increasing their prestige and reputation, are the main reasons for why organizations may start the decision-making process to adopt m-BI; all this under the umbrella of the organizing vision.

  • What's trending in social media analytics area? A retrospective
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: 2015 Americas Conference on Information Systems, AMCIS 2015. - 9780996683104
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A sub-area of business analytics increasingly growing in prominence is social media analytics (SMA), which is not surprising given the large volume of data and content generated daily in social media. Despite the growing interest, given the vastness of the area, there is little understanding of the topics and issues with respect to SMA that should be investigated by IS researchers. In an effort to contribute to this understanding, this paper in progress analyses SMA trends in research and practice. After searching within nineteen leading academic, practitioner and crossover outlets, we used an inductive approach to categorize the resulting articles. Preliminary results indicate that future IS studies should approach SMA as systems, and adopt a critical stance towards the existing claims that SMA only positively impacts organizations. Results also indicate that ethical-legal implications of SMA should receive more attention. Limitations of the study and plans for the future are highlighted.

  • An Approach for Designing Management Support Systems: The Design Science Research Process and its Outcomes
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Design science research involves creating and evaluating innovative methods and approaches to be used in design practice. We present an approach to be used in the process of designing Management Support Systems (MSS). The nature of managerial work makes the design, development, and implementation of MSS a major challenge. The MSS literature suggests that determining MSS requirements and specification of MSS are the most critical phases in MSS design and development. We present an approach that can be used as a guide for MSS design, with a primary focus on MSS requirements determination and how requirements can be fulfilled using information and communication technologies (ICT). The approach builds on Quinn and associates’ competing values model (CVM) of organizational effectiveness. The approach can guide MSS designers in designing MSS that support different managerial roles, i.e., the development of MSS that support managerial cognition, decision, and action.

  • The Importance of Form Field Validation : Lesson Learnt From a Feasibility Study of an M-Health Application in Malawi, Africa
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems Proceedings. - : Association for Information Systems. - 9789860491029
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measuring adherence to clinical guidelines using mobile health (mHealth) technologies when form field validation is enforced or turned on could potentially be viewed as skewing the dataset, leading to 100% adherence to the clinical rule base. In theory, healthcare providers should fully abide by clinical guidelines, whether in paper or digital format, to ensure that the patient receives appropriate care. However, what happens when mHealth form fieldvalidation is turned off? As part of a feasibility study in Malawi, Africa, we explored this phenomenon. Switching off validation on the mHealthartefact served its purpose within the context of a feasibility study where a parallel paper-based clinical assessment process remained in place. The design of this technical artefact with the turnkey validation feature afforded us the opportunity to turn validation on and off seamlessly. Ultimately, from an ethical, clinical and technical perspective the optimum approach is to ensurethat form field validation is switched on. With form field validation on adherence to the clinical guidelines is enforced which minimises incomplete assessment and the potential for suboptimal clinical decisions that could adversely affect patient care.

  • Design exemplars for synchronous e-learning : A design theory approach
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Computers and education. - Amsterdam : Elsevier BV. - 0360-1315 .- 1873-782X. ; 55:2, s. 652-662
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Synchronous e-learning has received much less research attention, as compared with asynchronous e-learning. Practitioners that consider using and designing synchronous e-learning are in urgent need of guidance. In order to address this need, we propose design exemplars for synchronous e-learning. They are directed towards a primary constituent community of teachers, administrators, managers and developers of e-learning. The exemplars have been theoretically as well as empirically grounded through cross-case analyses of studies conducted between 2003 and 2006. Moreover, the exemplars have been evaluated by conducting focus group sessions with experienced practitioners having experience of using and developing e-learning. Strong support was identified for each design exemplar. The exemplars can be used as research hypotheses and be tested in future design research. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Graphical modeling techniques and usefulness in the Model Driven Arcitechture : Which are the criteria for a "good" Computer independent model?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of The 31st Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS31). - : IRIS. - 9789186073121 ; , s. 13-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Object Management Group (OMG) has presented a framework for model driven development: Model Driven Architecture (MDA). The departure point of this paper is an interest in process oriented modeling techniques relevant for a computer independent model in the MDA. We searched for the answer on the question what constitutes a "good" computer independent model (CIM). To get an answer we were using OMG:s demands of the modeling techniques that should be used when developing CIMs and found four process oriented modeling techniques which could serve as candidates. These four process oriented modeling techniques is analyzed based by Moody"s quality criterions. The findings indicates that there are only one candidate, BPMN, that meets some of Moody"s quality criterions, but there also drawbacks in BPMN, such as the criterions; expressiveness and emphasis.

  • Harnessing Handheld Computing - Framework, Toolkit and Design Propositions
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The rapid development of handheld technologies such as smartphones and personal digital assistants in recent years has created opportunities for the mobile workforce to take advantage of computerised information systems. To apprehend and harness the opportunities of computerised information systems implemented on handheld devices it is crucial to fully understand the user group and the handheld technology. However, there is a lack of comprehensive frameworks and toolkits supporting designers of computerised handheld information systems for the mobile workforce. The aim of this dissertation is to address this issue by developing both a framework and a toolkit for use early in the design process. To develop and evaluate the framework and the toolkit, various qualitative methods such as interviews, artefact studies, and experiments were applied for assessing both users’ and designers’ views on handheld computing. The analysis is made from a designers’ perspective and based on the entities, user, application, context and technologies. The proposed accentuated factors framework is a comprehensive framework of fifteen factors, evaluated and approved by experienced practitioners. The HISD Toolkit presented is based on the accentuated factors framework and supported by the design propositions Least Common Denominator, Flexible Forms, Tune-In and Defensive Design, which are also presented in this dissertation. The main implication for research is the use of the accentuated factors framework in analysis of handheld computing. The main implications in practice are the use of the HISD Toolkit in the design of handheld information systems, in the teaching of handheld computing, and in the evaluation of existing systems as in the procurement of computerised handheld information systems. The study has been supported by the Swedish Research School of Management and Information Technology (MIT)

  • The evolution of an enterprise system implementation methodology by adaptation through reflexivity
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769556703 - 9781509019816 ; , s. 4961-4970
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In spite of an Enterprise Systems Implementation Methodology's (ESIM's) potential and significance for Enterprise Systems implementation, little attention has been paid to its evolution in ES literature. Moreover, current studies reveal contradictory findings and provide a fragmented understanding. The purpose of this paper is to provide a framework underpinned by a morphogenetic approach for explaining how ESIM evolves by adaptation through reflexivity. Our qualitative study resulted in a richer description of ESIM contents differentiated by adaptation strategies through reflexivity. Four theoretically and empirically informed ESIM adaptation strategies, i.e. reorienting, embedding, aligning and connecting, with related conditions and effects are suggested. This study retains valuable insights of prior works in Information Systems Development (ISD) research, since ESIM might be regarded as one of the latest interventions undertaken in an attempt to improve the quality of an ES product and the productivity and quality of an implementation process.
