  • Global Climate Talks from Failure to Cooperation and Hope : Swedish News Framings of COP15 and COP21
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Environmental Communication. - : Routledge. - 1752-4032 .- 1752-4040. ; 11:5, s. 682-699
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to offer an analysis of how two UN Conferences of Parties, COP15 in Copenhagen 2009 and COP21 in Paris 2015, were covered and debated in Swedish newspapers. Two national and two regional newspapers were selected for the study, and a qualitative frame analysis was conducted on 309 articles. A typology of frames applicable to science-related policy and climate change debates was used and its relevance for global climate summit context was discussed. Having territory in the Arctic region, indigenous populations affected by climate change measures, and political and public sensitivity to environmental issues, the climate debate has particular significance in the Swedish case. Findings indicate a trust in the role of national and supra-national governance to address climate change problems, but also that newspapers in Sweden maintained a focus on the global aspects of the two meetings, rather than framing them as surrogate battlefields for domestic politics.

  • The Arab Spring As Meta-Event and Communicative Spaces
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Television and New Media. - : SAGE Publications. - 1527-4764 .- 1552-8316. ; 14:4, s. 351-364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa, immediately labeled the Arab Spring, are best described as processes rather than outcomes. Despite being a common area of media focus due to decades-long geopolitics, the Arab Spring, as a mediatized meta-event, has led to the reemergence of the region as a discursive territory. The communicative spaces that opened up during and in the aftermath of the uprisings allowed for a multiplicity of topics to reenter public discourse across local, national, and transnational scales. In the process, seasoned debates such as religious sectarianism and democratic institutionalization gained magnitude. More specific debates such as Turkey's role as a model/antimodel added new discursive aspects to the multitopic ensemble. The purpose of this article is to reflect on the communicative and scalar dimensions in the mediation of the Arab Spring by way of taking the debates on Turkey as a case in point.

  • New Media Geographies and the Middle East
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Television and New Media. - : SAGE Publications. - 1527-4764 .- 1552-8316. ; 14:4, s. 267-270
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This special issue of Television & New Media brings together current research on media technologies, society, and culture in the Middle East from diverse methodological and analytical perspectives. The topics addressed cover a wide spectrum: circulation of Arab music videos and public discourse; Lebanese bloggers and mediated public spheres; transnational television audiences and ontological security; social media, TV talk shows, and political change in Egypt; youth-generated Arab media and cultural politics; and the Arab Spring as an ephemeral communicative space. Together, the articles provide a panorama of how today's multimodal media geographies and engaged actors reinscribe public cultures and politics in the Middle East.

  • Online mediations in transnational spaces : cosmopolitan (re)formations of belonging and identity in the Turkish diaspora
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Ethnic and Racial Studies. - : Routledge. - 0141-9870 .- 1466-4356. ; 35:5, s. 888-905
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The lives of transnational groups and individuals are marked by a spatial and imaginary split: a phenomenon wherein identity, belonging and representation have become increasingly elusive concepts, and the realm of the ‘cultural’ vastly important. And, the theoretical compasses of cosmopolitanism and transnationalism are particularly relevant and illuminating in considering social space, mediated communication and belonging in relation to urban diasporic communities and gendered subjectivities. The aim of this paper is to address expressions of identity and belonging at the intersection of online communicative practice and offline spatial formations, with a focus on the specificities of gendered constructions of sociality and subjectivity in the diaspora

  • The Encapsulated vs. the Cosmopolitan Self? : Towards a Phenomenological Understanding of Mediatized Communication and Complicit Surveillance
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mediatization refers to a meta-process whereby social life in its totality is (re)embedded in and saturated with mediated processes. This paper addresses the relationship between two theoretically diverging, yet socially intertwined, realms pertaining to various mediatization patterns: cosmopolitanism and surveillance. Mediatization implies increasing opportunities for ‘extending the self’, experienced in terms of mediated proximity, immediacy and boundary transgression – ultimately sustaining a more cosmopolitan outlook of the world. Yet, mediatization also brings growing opportunities for securitization, boundary control and social encapsulation, on behalf of societal institutions as well as individuals and groups. Contemporary forms and extensions of surveillance and cosmopolitanism are increasingly interwoven through the meta-process of mediatization, most recently the social saturation of converging ‘social’ media. This paper suggests that phenomenology, as a heuristic tool, offers a well-contextualized and grounded socio-cultural perspective to grasp the everyday dimensions and subjective moral positionalities ensuing from increased mediatization and related openings and closures

  • The reciprocal city : Performing solidarity—Mediating space through street art and graffiti
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Communication Gazette. - : SAGE Publications. - 1748-0485 .- 1748-0493. ; 79:6-7, s. 584-612
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, based on two case studies conducted in Stockholm and London, we discuss how graffiti and street art provide forms of expressive cosmopolitanism in reclaiming voice and reciprocity in the city. Through in-depth interviews and observations, we explore how urban artists, using their practice, foster ever-transient and contesting senses of outsidered aesthetics and communicative culture that both seek to challenge the institutionalization and hegemonic indoctrination of today's media cities and, as such, become part of the ensemble that constitute its visual geography. While there are many parallels and inter-urban synchronicity, our results indicate that locally-specific elements are prominent in each city. Both studies indicate that the solidaritarian and spatially mediating character of graffiti and street art, and not just their contents, constitutes a resource in sustaining the possibility of coproducing worldly visions in and of the cities. They both observe struggles for openness and social critique taking place across time and space.

  • Arctic sea-ice and the communication of climate change
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Popular Communication. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1540-5702 .- 1540-5710. ; 15:4, s. 249-268
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Media play a major role in framing key political issues such as climate change, and the melting of the Arctic snow and ice has become a bellwether of global climate change through the mediations of the region and its wildlife. While Arctic change has scientific significance for understanding global warming, it also plays a key role in the popular communication of global climate change and its impacts. This article addresses questions such as how the Arctic and its sea ice have become become powerful images of climate change, and what roles scientific activities, technologies, and networks play in relation to media and mediation. Drawing upon earlier research on the role of the media and framing in relation to climate change in general and upon Arctic climate change in particular, we explore how media framings are linked with various dynamics such as scientific practice and the institutional structure of the media system.

  • Media, Communication, and the Environment in Precarious Times
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Communication. - : Oxford University Press. - 0021-9916 .- 1460-2466. ; 68:2, s. 267-277
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The seminal 1983 "Ferments in the Field" collection made limited reference to environmental issues and concerns. Considering communication media and technological artifacts as both nature and culture and, more specifically, through defining media as both infrastructural environments and content, we discuss how challenges brought about by environmental change can inform contemporary media and communication research and environmental communication. The materiality of e-waste, which has resonance for cultural, political, economic, and geographic analyses, is used as an illuminating case in point. We link the implications ensuing from the e-waste issue with the roles mediation and communication of environmental narratives play, and how they can be informed by such "medianatures," as well as geopolitical considerations.

  • Cosmopolitanism in a Mediatized World : The Social Stratification of Global Orientations
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The contemporary media landscape invites us to experience a belonging to various distant places, mourn the victims of faraway disasters, expose ourselves to foreign cultures and engage in political issues in places far from our local context of living. In other words, we are invited to become citizens of the world – cosmopolitans. But are we? And if so, how is such cosmopolitanism expressed in a given society, under what social conditions, and in relation to what media practices?Contemporary social theory depicts a global or cosmopolitan mode of orienting in the world as paradigmatic of social life in global modernity. To date, little is known about the structural realities of such orientations. Against this backdrop, the aim of the present study is to understand the potentially “cosmopolitan” character of peoples’ outlooks and practices, and the societal conditions in which they can be identified. On the one hand, the aim of the study is to contribute to the largely theoretical accounts of the “cosmopolitan” character of social life in present times, andon the other, to understand the specific role of various media practices in the process generally described as “cosmopolitanization”.Results yielded by a national survey deployed in Sweden (n = 1 025) show that the distribution of various cosmopolitan dispositions abides by logics of social stratification. In tandem with previous research, cosmopolitanism – when studied “from below” – has a tendency to emerge in more privileged spheres of society. Being “connected” and simply living in a potentially global media landscape does not nullify this pattern. Contrary to significant parts of popular and scholarly conviction, the media is no uniform, all-encompassing environment operating as a force of cosmopolitanization across all social strata. The results of this study point towards a “mediatized cosmopolitanism” that is impossible to disentangle from social context and the power dynamics pertaining to that context.
