  • Gender Stereotypes and Venture Support Decisions : How Governmental Venture Capitalists Socially Construct Entrepreneurs' Potential
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship. - Hoboken : John Wiley & Sons. - 1042-2587 .- 1540-6520. ; 41:5, s. 833-860
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, we conduct a discourse analysis on a set of longitudinal observations of government venture capitalists' decisions to identify how gender stereotypes are socially constructed and activated when assessing entrepreneurs' potential in the financial distribution of venture support. The present study finds that female entrepreneurs risk receiving significantly less venture capital, which is caused by the language and rhetoric used that relates to gender differences when funding decisions are made. We consider and discuss the implications of our results for related research about distributing venture capital and the social constructions of female and male entrepreneurs

  • How a learning orientation affects drivers of innovativeness and performance in service delivery
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 30:2, s. 169-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Relying on organizational innovativeness for long-term growth and profitability can be difficult, time consuming, and expensive. In the context of service delivery of 395 strategic business units (SBU) in Israel's healthcare industry, this paper examines the role of a learning-orientation as a moderator in an integrative model of organizational innovativeness. We find moderation of the impacts of risk-taking, creativity, competitor benchmarking orientation, and environmental opportunities on innovativeness. Moreover, we find the influence on performance pronounced for high learning-oriented SBUs. The paper shows that learning orientation should be considered for understanding effective innovativeness work for competitive service delivery.

  • When a new industry meets traditional and declining ones: An integrative approach towards dialectics and social movement theory in a model of regional industry emergence processes
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 26:3, s. 290-308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper takes an integrative approach towards dialectics and social movement theories in a model of regional industry emergence processes. Based on an inductive qualitative investigation we describe how a new industry emerges in a declining and peripheral region dominated by struggling and traditional local industry. The emanating model of regional industry emergence is based on four main processes; framing processes, movement mobilisation processes, inter-industry relational processes and dialectical processes, which together shape the emerging regional industry. This exemplifies how new regional industry mobilisation efforts provide an ‘anti-thesis' to traditional industry, and how established industry actors respond with contestation to protect their business concepts. Furthermore we illustrate how new industry actors reframe their concepts to complement dominating traditional industry and to overcome tensions and conflicts. Following dialectic interaction between new and traditional industry we noticed signs of acceptance and synthesis between the newly formed and old industry actors; ultimately resulting in a revitalisation of the region's traditional industry. As such, the paper makes a point of accounting for agency and productive conflict when understanding regional industry renewal and emergence.

  • When stereotypical gender notions see the light of day, will they burst? : Venture capitalists' gender constructions versus venturing performance facts
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Venturing Insights. - New York : Elsevier. - 2352-6734. ; 9, s. 32-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although often discussed, there has been limited effort to match venture capitalists’ construction of gender notions with specific facts about the entrepreneurs’ venturing activities. This study shows how stereotypical gender notions of both men and women entrepreneurs are embedded in venture capitalists’ assessments and analyses as well as explores whether or not these notions have substance based on actual performance. Drawing on interview data and statistical analysis of objective key performance information from accounting reports, we identify four myths in the evaluations of 126 venture capital applications for governmental capital that do not have any significant empirical substance. We discuss these findings’ implications for the study of myths in women's entrepreneurship.

  • Processes in collaborative entrepreneurship : a longitudinal case study of how multiple actors exploit a radically new opportunity
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1554-7191 .- 1555-1938. ; 10:4, s. 713-726
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this longitudinal case study, the authors integrate the theory on social movement with the entrepreneurship literature on opportunity discovery, evaluation, and exploitation. They construct a model on collaborative entrepreneurial processes in which multiple partners are involved in identifying, forming, and exploiting an opportunity. Three interdependent subprocesses are identified: (1) the opportunity conceptualization dialogue, (2) resource mobilization and, (3) legitimacy building, which significantly contribute to our understanding of how individuals across different organizations become engaged in collaborative entrepreneurial processes. The model of collaborative entrepreneurial processes complements traditional models of the entrepreneurial process, which place the individual entrepreneur at the center of the process and does not consider group mobilization processes in which the actors aim to be creative and innovative in collaborating with actors from other organizations or firms.

  • Struggling with social capital : Pakistani women micro entrepreneurs' challenges in acquiring resources
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0898-5626 .- 1464-5114. ; 29:7-8, s. 759-790
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A crucial aspect of successful venturing is social capital. In contrast to traditional Western-oriented research where social capital is construed positively, we found that in the traditional, patriarchal society of Pakistan, social capital puts high restrictions on women micro entrepreneurs - where social capital prevents or slows venturing efforts. Results also show that although women do get some selective access to resources from family members, they are restricted by limited access to social capital outside of family members. As women entrepreneurs have the potential to play an important role in the development of any society, and especially so in developing countries, based on the insights derived from this qualitative study, we propose suggestions for further research on women micro entrepreneurs in non-Western contexts.

  • The Surprising Duality of Jugaad : Low Firm Growth and High Inclusive Growth
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Management Studies. - UK : John Wiley & Sons. - 0022-2380 .- 1467-6486. ; 57:1, s. 87-128
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Western theories on creativity emphasize the importance of access to resources and the generation of innovations as a source of sustainable competitive advantage for firms. However, perhaps the emphasis on slack resources and the firm as the level of analysis may be less appropriate for understanding the benefits of individual creative problem solving in resource‐poor environments of the east; focusing solely on the firm is not sufficiently inclusive and may underestimate the benefits of creative problem solving under resource scarcity. Through an inductive interpretive case study of 12 problem solvers in the highly resource‐poor environment of rural India, we identified the antecedents, dimensions and duality of outcomes for an Indian cultural source of creative problem solving called jugaad. Jugaad relies on assertive defiance, trial‐and‐error experiential learning and the recombination of available resources to improvise a frugal quick‐fix solution. Our inductive framework provides new insights into the dual outcomes of creative problem solving from an eastern perspective; jugaad is unlikely to be a source of competitive advantage for firm growth but represents a source of enhanced wellbeing for inclusive growth.

  • Too small or too large to trust your partners in multipartner alliances? : The role of effort in initiating generalized exchanges
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 27:1, s. 99-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes how smaller and larger firms face difficulties in establishing trust in multipartner alliances. Using survey data from a sample of 141 firms engaged in such alliances, we examine a curvilinear relationship between firm size and trust. Our results suggest an inverted U-shaped relationship between firm size and the degree to which a firm develops trust in partners. We also establish that effort to establish generalized exchanges is important for trust building. Specifically, we notice the inverted U-shape to be particularly prominent among firms that do not make the effort to establish generalized exchanges, which implies that smaller and larger firms depend upon concerted effort to establish generalized exchanges in developing high levels of trust in alliance partners. This has implications for explaining important influences on trust building in social exchange systems.
