  • The changing landscape of work time reduction. The past and the future.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Sustainability and the Political Economy of Welfare. - 9781138065888 - 9781138925281 - 9781317407423 - 9781315683850 ; , s. 125-125
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter explains a historical overview of work organization strategies during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. It analyses the political and economic factors that affected the work time norms in the second half of the twentieth century, from around 1970 to 2000. The chapter discusses work organization in the changing world of low economic growth, decelerating increases in labour productivity and high levels of unemployment. It examines recent work time reduction and work-sharing policies in several European countries and evaluates their results. Work time reduction (WTR) became a critical and highly disputed issue in the early stages of emerging capitalism when the industrial revolution brought about not only technological advances, but also unprecedented levels of increases in work time. Improved labour productivity led to a hitherto unseen economic output, flooding markets with products and increasing material standards of living.

  • The Role of Local Governments in Governing Sustainable Consumption and Sharing Cities
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: A Research Agenda for Sustainable Consumption Governance. - 9781788117814 ; 1, s. 172-184
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Municipalities are key actors in their role as planners for sustainable urban development, and also have the responsibility to transform ambitious national and global goals and visions into local practices (McCormick et al., 2013). The role of municipalities in relation to enhancing sustainable consumption patterns has been increasingly highlighted by policy-makers and in research. Creating sustainable societies and shaping their consumption patterns has become an everyday activity for municipalities. This is also the case for the Nordic countries and not least for Sweden, which will be used as an example in this Chapter. The Nordic countries have the ambition of becoming sustainable leaders and enabling sustainable consumption (Mont et al., 2013).

  • Advancing sustainable solutions : An interdisciplinary and collaborative research agenda
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526. ; 123, s. 1-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable solutions are needed to drive a profound industrial and societal transformation towards a sustainable, low-carbon, resilient, equitable and prosperous future. This Special Volume of the Journal of Cleaner Production addresses possibilities and drivers for change by focusing on strategies for sustainable solutions with the underlying purpose of defining an interdisciplinary and collaborative research agenda for the next 10 years. Based on over 20 articles from around the world, we identify 10 key areas for targeted research and action, which are underpinned by 5 themes on sustainable solutions, including consumption governance and lifestyles, cities and buildings, business management and practice, international and national policies, and education and learning. The main message of this Special Volume is that we need creative, robust and audacious strategies in governance, management and education to catalyse and mainstream sustainable development across scales and sectors.

  • The role of values and public perceptions in policy making for Sustainable Consumption
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Summary of key messages for policy makers • Systemic approach is critical Climate change and natural resource depletion continues to be driven not least by unsustainable levels and patterns of consumption. There is growing recognition that the shift required to achieve sustainable consumption and production is a momentous paradigm shift in Western culture. Due to the holistic nature of shifting cultural values, policy makers need to take a systemic and comprehensive approach to working with cultural dynamics. This requires a comprehensive strategy within which a variety of approaches to engaging with citizen’s consumptive behaviours can be applied. • Policy makers in shaping public opinion Values are fairly stable, but do change over time and sometimes surprisingly quickly. Policy makers continuously influence cultural values and their leadership potential in shaping public opinion, even on controversial issues, is backed up historically. Using their inevitable influence with greater awareness and transparency could significantly enhance the potential for positive systemic change. Indeed, it is probable that without their leadership, the necessary changes won’t occur. • A bold positive vision of a sustainable society A vision of a sustainable society that is based on we-centred values is potentially very appealing, as it could be based on values that are already important to people, such as developing relationships with family, friends and community, self-development, trust, personal and societal health and well-being. • Importance of framing policy messages Awareness of how policies and communications are ‘framed’, i.e. what language is used and how messages are put into context, is necessary to ensure one is communicating the appropriate message and underlying values. This is also important in order to secure synergistic effects of individual policy instruments to promote systemic change to enable sustainability. • The role of social marketing in changing values Social marketing is a useful potential tool for activating and strengthening we-centred values – affiliation, self-acceptance and community. Care is needed to avoid the familiar practice of ‘selling’ sustainability using the dominant consumerist, I-centred values - financial success, conformity, status from material possessions - that hinder the achievement of sustainable consumption in the longer run.

  • Gaining legitimacy in contemporary world
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sustainable Society. - 1756-2546. ; 1:2, s. 134-147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates the links between environmental and social activities of organisations and organisational legitimacy. The recent overemphasis on the business case for voluntary environmental and socialactivities of organisations is undermining the attention to other drivers such as legitimacy concerns. Previous literature has discussed how the principle of legitimacy may underpin corporate environmental and social performance providing motives for managers to pursue corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies. In this article, we tried to advance questions that relate more to how CSR activities could potentially influence legitimation efforts of organisations. We focused on two main issues. The first is how CSR activities play into the different legitimation efforts of organisations at cognitive and socio-political levels. The second issue identifies potential variations in organisational choices of CSR activities as legitimation efforts and the conditions that influence these differences as constructs for further empirical research.

  • Systematic Framework to Assess Social Impacts of Sharing Platforms
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: PLoS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 15:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • (1) BackgroundResearch and user experience suggests both positive and negative social impacts resulting from practices in the sharing economy: social cohesion vs. gentrification; inclusiveness vs. discrimination; flexible employment vs. exploitation. However, as yet, there is no framework for understanding or assessing these social impacts holistically.(2) ObjectiveWe aim to improve understanding of the social impacts of sharing platforms and develop a systematic framework to assess these impacts.(3) MethodsWe conduct a narrative literature review and stakeholder workshop, integrating insights to produce a systematic social impact assessment framework and a practice-oriented tool.(4) ResultsWe identify four social aspects—trust, empowerment, social justice, and inclusivity—and eighteen indicators that make up the framework. We describe each indicator and its relevance to the sharing economy as well as suggest measurable variables in the form of a practice-oriented tool.(5) ConclusionsThe framework and tool are the first holistic method for assessing social impact in the sharing economy, which may inform researchers, sharing platforms, regulators, investors, and citizens to mitigate adverse social impacts while enhancing the overall net social value of the sharing economy.
