  • Transforming elections into opportunities for political choice
  • 2007
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This monograph presents a well-informed overview and analysis of political transitions, democratic struggles and elections in West Africa. It explores the ways in which various authoritarian regimes across the sub-region have tried to subvert democracy and how the citizens of various countries have struggled against dictatorship and impunity, to achieve the return to democratic rule. Drawing on insights from the Ghanaian model of free and fair elections, Niger's difficult, but successful transtion to democracy, elections in post-conflict Sierra Leone and Liberia, and the struggles for democracy in Nigeria, Jibrin Ibrahim proposes concrete strategies that will empower the people of West Africa to make political choices which will advance and secure their individual and collective socio-economic and democratic rights.

  • Albert Luthuli and Dag Hammarskjöld - leaders and visionaries : symposia in commemoration of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Chief Albert Luthuli and Dag Hammarskjöld
  • 2012
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Two symposia in Uppsala and Oslo during November 2011 marked the 50th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Chief Albert Luthuli and Dag Hammarskjöld at the same ceremony for 1960 and (posthumously) 1961, respectively. The deliberations, which involved close family members of the late Chief Luthuli, commemorated and honoured two outstanding leaders of the 20th century. While they never met personally, they shared principle values and ethics rooted in a firm belief in the equality of people, human rights, justice and peace at a time of decolonization and apartheid. This booklet compiles a summary of the various presentations in Uppsala and Oslo, which paid respect to the two role models in their relevance also for today. It is published during the year, in which the two Uppsala based institutions celebrate their 50th anniversary.

  • Supporting African peace operations
  • 2012
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Nordic Africa Institute, the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation and the Norwegian Institute for International Affairs hosted a seminar in Uppsala, Sweden, on 15 and 16 December 2011, that brought together AU, EU and UN officials closely involved in peace operations in Africa. The seminar’s purpose was to allow participants to compare their experiences of the different support models that have been used to date in Sudan and Somalia. International support for African peace operations provides opportunities but also poses challenges. This report examines four of these challenges in some detail: the AU Commission’s limited capacity to plan and manage peace operations; insufficient political engagement by African member states with AU peace operations; the short-termism and self-interest of some of the AU’s partners; and the need for UN Security Council permanent members to value and ensure a shared AU-UN strategic vision. The report also includes policy recommendations for resolving these challenges.

  • Under urban mask: On rural landscapes with different logics
  • 2014
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As a result of natural hazards, ecological disasters, lawlessness, wars and fluctuations in economy, numerous European landscapes slowly but surely lose their ‘raison d’être’. The consequence of this is a continuous process of degradation, both in respect to infrastructure as well as the social fabric. Effectively, the changes that occur create specific landscapes that encompass elements, which, at a first glance, could be considered both urban and rural. However, these are prone to mechanisms other than the progressive blurring of the rural-urban dichotomy brought on by urbanization; they are subject to a different kind of rationale. Are they just dissonant nests of desolation or merely slumbering resources for future creative uses? How do we view them? How should we handle them? To the fore of this special session we bring analyses of rural landscapes endowed with specific urban traits whose common denominator is their dysfunctional character. The main task of this special session is to unravel the logics of these particular landscapes by means of: (1) Cognition of the factors and mechanisms that contributed to their emergence; (2) Analyses of the processes that take place in them in order to: (a) determine their course and dynamics, (b) establish potential directions of change; (c) propose methodological solutions – how to do research; (3) Generalization of the research results in search of common problems and similarities in order to: (a) formulate universal methodological assumptions, (b) marshal solutions that are useful in decision-making on administrative and institutional levels. The session has attracted 10 presentations addressing any of these issues in the context of dysfunctional rural landscapes with interesting perspectives and innovative approaches. The spectrum of this double session included: post-war rural areas in Amsterdam (J.E. Abrahamse), Zagreb’s peri-urban fringe (A. Toskić, D. Njegač & D. Orešić), rural transformation from urban influences in Olsztyn (M. Wasilewicz-Pszczółkowska, A. Szczepańska & A. Senetra), degraded urban agglomerations in Poland (R. Krzysztofik, I. Kantor-Pietraga & T. Spórna), landscapes transcending rural-urban characteristics in Gothenburg (M. Dymitrow, R. Brauer, G. Holmertz, B. Apostolovska-Toševska, F. Holmberg & L. Johansson), landscape discriminants in valorization of rural areas in Poland (A. Bocheńska-Skałecka, Z. Kuriata, I. Niedźwiecka-Filipiak, A. Podolska & L. Serafin), degraded towns in Silesia (R. Szmytkie), agri-ghettos in central Poland (J. Biegańska, E. Grzelak-Kostulska & M. Dymitrow), Bucharest's Romani ghetto (D. Teodorescu) and urban agriculture in socially deprived areas of Thessaloniki (E. Gavriilidou, D. Dedousi, E. Oureilidou & M. Ritou).
