  • Historiography and Swedish Political Culture: A Political Science Perspective
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lee Miles gave one of the lead presentations at an international conference on 'Political Outsiders in Swedish History', funded by the Centre for Nordic Research and the Department of Scandinavian Studies at University College London (UCL) and the Scandinavian Politics Specialist Group of the UK's Political Studies Association (PSA). The paper by a political scientist commented upon the value interdisciplinary linkages between studies by political scientists and historians. Lee Miles also argued that the study of political outsiders in Swedish history offered new means to challenge some of the traditional orthodoxes surrounding the study of Swedish politics, past and present

  • Future of a Fusing Europe
  • 2008
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • After providing a thematic survey of the challenges confronting the European Union today, Lee Miles calls upon EU scholars to ‘think bigger’ about the future of the European Union. He argues that fusion approaches offer considerable conceptual strengths, and the potential to develop theory-informed scenarios, that can aid our understanding of the future evolution of the Union. Through an evaluation of the 2007 Reform Treaty, the author also concludes that the EU will further evolve as a ‘Fusing Europe’ and that EU external relations policy will be an area of notable future development.

  • From the Soviet to the European Union : A Policy Study of SME Assistance Organising in Lithuania
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Establishment of a policy linkage between particular outspoken societal needs and their realisation via the body political is critical for recently democratised polities. In Lithuania, a former Soviet bloc country undergoing a complex transition, an urge from various societal groups for successful and adequate policies exemplify the importance of this linkage. The study inquires into its establishment during the transition from the Soviet to the EU by exploring collective action to assist Lithuanian SMEs -a new group of economic actors -with their transition period needs. Policy linkage is operationalised in terms of successful and adequate policies. Methodologically, the study examines the usefulness of bottom-up approach to policy organising for revealing policy process in the transition context. Theoretically, the study tests the explanatory power of the major bottom-up assumptions regarding the preconditions for policy linkage in the Lithuanian transition. Especially the role of the government and formal politicaladministrative institutions is explored. The study findings indicate very limited government, EU and mandated actors’ success in organising adequate SME assistance policies. Ad hoc collective actions with mixed types of actors and alternative structurations were found to frequently supplement for the policy linkage. Useful explanations to this were provided by the employed context, structural and behavioural factors. Active selforganising of policy receivers was a precondition significantly increasing the adequacy of the collective assistance action. Also adherence to the rule of law principles in policy process should not be undermined to increase chances of policy adequacy. Especially a combination of behavioural factors characteristic of social capital in the localities studied was found important to consider further. Policy learning is yet underestimated as a factor structuring policy action and enabling policy linkage. Lack of policy structures has implications for policy learning. The study also proposes policy adequacy as a complimentary indicator of transition success.

  • Political Outsiders in Swedish History: Reflections from a Political Science Perspective
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Political Outsiders in Swedish History, 1848-1932. - Cambridge : Cambridge Scholars Publishing. - 1443809764 ; , s. 157-170
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter, reflects upon the role of political outsiders from the perspective of a political scientist with an expertise in Swedish politics, and engages the contributions of fellow historians in the book. Two main lines of argumentation are followed. First, that historical perspectives can further understandings of the cross-class appeal of the Social Democrats in Sweden, and the development of non-violent political methods. Second, that historical interpretations might, by focusing on outsiders, help others understand the current changes in Swedish contemporary politics since outsiders become visible when cracks in the political culture appear

  • Entrepreneurship in the polis : Understanding political entrepreneurship
  • 2015. - 1
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Dynamics of entrepreneurship have attracted growing attention from scholars of political science, policy studies, public administration and planning, as well as more recently, from the realms of international relations and foreign policy analysis. Under the banner of political entrepreneurship, this volume considers and maps out conceptual approaches to the study of entrepreneurship drawn from these fields, discusses synergies, envisages new analytical tools and offers contemporary empirical case studies, illustrating the diverse political contexts in which entrepreneurship takes place in the polis. Drawing upon an international cast of senior academics and cutting edge young researchers, the volume takes a closer look at key aspects of political entrepreneurship, such as, defining political entrepreneurs, how it relates to change, decision-making and strategies, organizational arrangements, institutional rules, varying contexts and future research agendas. By highlighting the political aspects of entrepreneurship, the volume presents new exciting opportunities for understanding entrepreneurial activities at regional, national and international levels. The volume will be of particular relevance to scholars and students of political science, policy studies, public administration, planning, international relations and business studies as well as practitioners interested in the nexus and utility of entrepreneurship in the modern-day political world.

  • The Swedish Left and European Integration: Linking Laval and Lisbon
  • 2008
  • Konferensbidrag (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This paper (co-authored with Hans Loden) evaluates the policy positions of the three primary parties of the Swedish Left - the Social Democratic Party, the Left Party and the Greens - towards the 2004 Constitutional Treaty and 2007 Lisbon Treaty. The paper argues that the policy discourses and policy positions of the Swedish Left reflect an attempt to link discussions emanating from the Laval case with the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in Sweden during 2008. The paper was given at an international workshop funded by the London office of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Foundation, that brought together leading experts to present evaluations covering 12 different European countries. The paper is based on a chapter to be published in an edited volume by Manchester University Press in 2009/10

  • Making Mischief With Swedish Models : Reflections on Contemporary Swedish Politics
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavica. - : Norvik Press. - 0036-5653. ; 49:1, s. 65-84
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article, is based upon, and was first delivered as the Inaugural Professorial Lecture of Lee Miles in association with his inauguration as Professor of Political Science at Karlstad University (17th September 2009). The article attempts to discuss four aspects. First, the author argues that there is today a serious disparity between the practical realities of contemporary Swedish politics and the continued discussions among the country's political elites, as well as between scholars, on the resonance of Sweden as a 'model society' with a distinctive 'Swedish model'. Second, he then explores three themes that explain the path dependency of the traditional social-democratic inspired paradigm of a Swedish model, and its increasingly changing nature, with a particular emphasis on the long term trends affecting Sweden since the 1990s. Third, Lee Miles argues that the period since the victory of the non-socialist Alliance bloc in 2006 may represent the beginning of a critical juncture in Swedish politics and new attempts to re-engineer not just the political ground but also the political narratives underpinning any (future) Swedish model. Fourth, and in this context, Lee Miles envisages that the 2010 General Election has the potential to become another important watershed in Swedish contemporary politics
