  • Coloniality and Decolonisation in the Nordic region
  • 2023
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book advances critical discussions about what coloniality, decoloniality and decolonization mean and imply in the Nordic region. It brings together analysis of complex realities from the perspectives of the Nordic peoples, a region that are often overlooked in current research, and explores the processes of decolonization that are taking place in this region. The book offers a variety of perspectives that engage with issues such as Islamic feminism and the progressive left; racialization and agency among Muslim youths; indigenizing distance language education for Sami; extractivism and resistance among the Sami; the Nordic international development endeavour through education; Swedish TV-reporting on Venezuela; creolizing subjectivities across Roma and non-Roma worlds and hierarchies; and the whitewashing and sanitization of decoloniality in the Nordic region. As such, this book extends much of the productive dialogue that has recently occurred internationally in decolonial thinking but also in the areas of critical race theory, whiteness studies, and postcolonial studies to concrete and critical problems in the Nordic region. This should make the book of considerable interest to scholars of history of ideas, anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, postcolonial studies, international development studies, legal sociology and (intercultural) philosophy with an interest in coloniality and decolonial social change.

  • Theorizing Heritage through Non-Violent Resistance
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book is about the entanglement of heritage and resistance in different situations of conflicts, and the opportunities this entanglement may provide for social justice. This entanglement is investigated in the different contributions through theoretical and empirical analyses of heritage-led resistance to neoliberal economic development, violation of the subaltern, authorised narratives and state-invented traditions, colonialism and settler colonialism, and even dominating discourses of social movement, to name just a few. Crossing the disciplinary boundaries of heritage and resistance studies, these analyses bring new insights into several timely debates, especially those concerned with the interrelated critical questions of displacement, gentrification, exclusion, marginalization, urbicide, spatial cleansing, dehumanization, alienation, ethnic cleansing and social injustice. Following our purposeful and future-driven approach, we wish to bring new energy to the field of heritage studies through the focus on the potential of heritage and resistance for hopeful change rather than adding to the field yet another overwhelming engagement with conflict and war.

  • Reimagineering the Common in Precarious Times
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intercultural Studies. - : Routledge. - 0725-6868 .- 1469-9540. ; 39:2, s. 207-223
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper explores movements for social transformation in precarious times of austerity, dispossessed commons and narrow nationalism; movements counterpoised to an exhausted neoliberalism on the one hand, and a neoconservative xenophobic populism on the other. Applying ‘rainbow coalition’ as generic concept it points at contours of a globally extended countermovement for social transformation, traversing ‘race’, class and gender, driven by reimaginings of the commons and indicating how they could be repossessed and democratically ruled; that is ‘reimagineered’). A multisited enquiry explores how actors express their claims as activist citizens under varying conditions and constellations, and if/how discourses and practices from different locations and at different scales inform each other. It interrogates whether there may be an actual equivalence of outlook, objective and strategy of ostensibly homologous contending movements which develop under varying local, national and regional circumstances in contemporary communities riveted by schisms of class, ‘race’/ethnicity and gender, occupied by the ‘migration’ issue and challenged by popular demands for social sustainability. The paper contributes to social theory by linking questions posed by critics of ‘post-politics’ concerning contingences of pluralist democracy and revitalised politics of civil society, to precarity studies focused on globalisation and the changing conditions of citizenship, labour and livelihoods.

  • Global urbanization and food production in direct competition for land : Leverage places to mitigate impacts on SDG2 and on the Earth System
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Anthropocene Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 2053-0196 .- 2053-020X. ; 6:1-2, s. 71-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global urbanization and food production are in direct competition for land. This paper carries outa critical review of how displacing crop production from urban and peri-urban land to other areas– because of issues related to soil quality – will demand a substantially larger proportion of theEarth’s terrestrial land surface than the surface area lost to urban encroachment. Such relationshipsmay trigger further distancing effects and unfair social-ecological teleconnections. It risks also settingin motion amplifying effects within the Earth System. In combination, such multiple stressors set thescene for food riots in cities of the Global South. Our review identifies viable leverage points on whichto act in order to navigate urban expansion away from fertile croplands. We first elaborate on thepolitical complexities in declaring urban and peri-urban lands with fertile soils as one global commons. We find that the combination of an advisory global policy aligned with regional policies enablingrobust common properties rights for bottom-up actors and movements in urban and peri-urbanagriculture (UPA) as multi-level leverage places to intervene. To substantiate the ability of aligningglobal advisory policy with regional planning, we review both past and contemporary examples whereempowering local social-ecological UPA practices and circular economies have had a stimulatingeffect on urban resilience and helped preserve, restore, and maintain urban lands with healthy soils.

  • Linguistic Populism in India (prelude to Alternative language principles for an Indian school)
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sanskrit can be a great language for science and administration in India: everyone uses its words, it favours no one, it embodies much of India’s civilisation, and its word-building readies it for today’s needs. Instead, Hindi was chosen as official language in a populist move favouring the largest linguistic group and disfavouring the South and Northeast of India. Each state imposes its own language. Indian governments have for 70 years given majority speakers unearned privilege but little else: all science, technology and higher studies are done in English. The politics has been only about power. In most subjects, no Indian language has been developed to a level fit for higher study. Language skills have declined across the board. People no longer learn languages neighbouring their own; they talk to people from neighbouring states using the bad Hindi they learn for Government jobs. Many call Hindi the ”national” language (it isn’t). Othering is widespread. People sing Hindi songs in ”national” competitions where their pronunciation is mocked. Hindi films get laughs by simply showing a caricatured ”South Indian”. Tarun Vijay of the BJP in 2017: ”If we (Indians) were racist, why would we ... live with South Indians? We have blacks ... all around us”. Globalisation brought high-paying jobs requiring technical skills and English; Hindi and state languages lost their status. But now even the poor want English-medium schools. Since most teachers can scarcely speak English, their schools will teach bad English and little content, exacerbating India’s education problems. One could instead teach children in their first language, giving them a strong foundation in their culture (and their often hoary literary traditions) and in English as a foreign language. Will India pause its rush to disaster and implement this or other solutions?

  • Barrio women and Energopower in Medellín, Colombia
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Latin American Studies. - 0022-216X .- 1469-767X. ; 49:2, s. 355-382
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article argues that the prepaid energy system put into operation in Medellín and across Colombia worked as an expression of ‘energopower’; that is, energy as a means to govern societies. The article uses press archives and company statements, official statistics and group interviews to show how energopower operates in Medellín along three lines: that Empresas Públicas de Medellín, the city's public utility company, encouraged disconnected and displaced people as new buyers of prepaid energy services instead of citizens entitled to those services; that the implementation of the prepaid energy system coincided with the vertiginous capitalisation that allowed the city to fund its ‘Social Urbanism’ and EPM to expand operations across Colombia and other countries in Latin America; and, that prepaid electricity as a tool of energopower subjugated displaced and disconnected populations to new forms of affordability that prompted barrio women to understand and oppose its disciplining methods of domination.

  • Ethnic Conflict and the Right to Return of Limbo Disaporas : Multifaceted Reflections on the Case of BiH
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Migration and Ethnic Studies (Migracijske i Etničke Teme). - Zagreb : Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies. - 1333-2546 .- 1848-9184. ; 20:1, s. 29-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the phenomenon of refugees and resettled persons in the process of forcedmigrations in the aftermath of man-made disasters. Although some of the ideas presented here couldhave wider application, the focus is on post-conflict zones within the former Yugoslavia, namely BiH.The paper uses the questions of ethnicity and nationalism within resettlement, dislocation and immigrationas a backdrop, into which the issue of globalization is also briefly reflected. The intention hereis not to cover a wide range of pressing topics, but simply to relate a number of issues arising in contemporarylarge-scale forced migrations to a resurgence of cultural specificity and ethnicized nationalismas counterpoints to globalization. The paper introduces the concept of “limbo diasporas” in the caseof Bosnian refugees in Sweden through reflection and linkage with the aforementioned concepts. Thepaper ends with some recommendations and open questions on social rehabilitation and ethnic healingas well as some general conclusions.

  • Att gestalta Chthulucenen - Om hur kvinnor stärker släktbanden med havssköldpaddor i Nicaragua : Performing the Chthulucene – on how women strengthen kinship with sea turtles in Nicaragua
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Tidsskriftet Antropologi. - : Det Kgl. Bibliotek/Royal Danish Library. - 0906-3021 .- 2596-5425. ; :83, s. 65-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article studies how women’s caring roles in the Nicaraguan fishing village of Padre Ramos, are extended even to turtles. As such, it reminds Donna Haraway’s fictive figures and metaphors about the kind of small critters predominant during the chthulucene, the era when humans strengthen their kinship with all other life forms to live and die better together on earth. Padre Ramos is visited annually by hawksbill turtles to lay their eggs. As the species is threatened with extinction, the village adopted the turtles as its flagship species, then transiting from hunting to caring for turtles. Although the villagers were the most vital link to save the turtles, they lived under constant threat to die out as a community or be evicted from the nature reserve. Through a ten-day anthropological action with video power, the author follows the women’s rhizovocality when they decided to occupy an unused centrally located plot in the village to build a playground with turtles as the central theme. Through this action, the women’s acted like „small critters” that bit into the compost of authorities’ rotten moral practices while reusing old car tires, logs, and pallets in the construction. Thus, the playground became a monument to the village’s new kinship with the turtles, the women’s roles as a healing force in the nature reserve as much as in the moral account. The situation highlighted how current efforts to stop the massive extinction of species are being conducted in deep power conflicts. The chthulucene is necessary but also marked by conflicts of interest.
