  • Romania is a family and it needs a strict father : Conceptual metaphors at work in radical right populist discourses
  • Ingår i: Nationalities Papers. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0090-5992 .- 1465-3923. ; 38:5, s. 705-721
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Investigating Romanian radical right populism, I evidence the gendered nature of conceptual metaphors and provide insights on the specific masculinities that they underpin in such political discourses. With the 2004 presidential elections as a backdrop, the analysis focuses on how the radical right populist candidates articulated in their discourses the conceptual metaphor of the "strict father." At first, the theoretical standpoints on conceptual metaphors are corroborated with the conceptualization of populist charismatic leadership. Subsequently, a gendered perspective is added to the populist conceptualizations. The leaders' self-representation as messianic fathers of the national family is evidenced by investigating their discursive appeals to protect, discipline and punish the people. Furthermore, I elaborate how conceptual metaphors may be employed to consolidate a position of uncontested leadership and moral superiority of the radical right populist leaders.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the phenomenon of refugees and resettled persons in the process of forcedmigrations in the aftermath of man-made disasters. Although some of the ideas presented here couldhave wider application, the focus is on post-conflict zones within the former Yugoslavia, namely BiH.The paper uses the questions of ethnicity and nationalism within resettlement, dislocation and immigrationas a backdrop, into which the issue of globalization is also briefly reflected. The intention hereis not to cover a wide range of pressing topics, but simply to relate a number of issues arising in contemporarylarge-scale forced migrations to a resurgence of cultural specificity and ethnicized nationalismas counterpoints to globalization. The paper introduces the concept of “limbo diasporas” in the caseof Bosnian refugees in Sweden through reflection and linkage with the aforementioned concepts. Thepaper ends with some recommendations and open questions on social rehabilitation and ethnic healingas well as some general conclusions.

    • Institutional Settings and Civic Education: A Comparative Study of Different Types of Publicand Private Schools.Since the 1990s, the Swedish school systemhas become increasingly more diversified. Decentralization, the introduction ofprivate schools, the challenge of globalization and increased ethnic diversity amongpupils have contributed to an increasingheterogeneity. This project analyses the prospects for civiceducation in different institutional settings and contexts, in both public and private schools. Using unique survey data1999 and 2009 we ask which effects differentinstitutional settings have on ”citizen competences”, i.e. civic engagement, political efficacy, knowledge about democracy and political issues, and democratic values and tolerance. The project breaks down into three distinct but interrelated parts. The first deals with changes over time in young Swedes' civic competences. The second subproject focuses on the way and consequences when controversial issues are taught in different schools and institutional settings. The third sub-project adds acomparative perspective by analyzing similarities and differences among young people and schools in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and England.

  • Heteronormative Constructions of Romanianness : A Genealogy of Gendered Metaphors in Romanian Radical-Right Populism 2000-2009
  • Ingår i: Debatte. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0965-156X .- 1469-3712. ; 19:1-2, s. 453-470
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present article investigates the recent history of the Romanian national construct as a matrix for gendered metaphors at the beginning of the twenty-first century, as it is heralded by the main radical-right populist party the Greater Romania Party (Partidul România Mare, PRM). Focusing on the Greater Romania Magazine (Revista România Mare, RRM) - the party's main media outlet - the analysis is centered on the PRM leader's editorials during a well-defined timeframe in the recent history of Romanian radical-right populism, from the preparations for presidential elections in 2000, which witnessed Tudor's surprising runoff, through the subsequent presidential elections in 2004, and up to EU parliamentary elections in 2009, which enabled the PRM to send three representatives to the EU Parliament. The staunchly restrictive definition of the family, portrayed as the exclusive heteronormative domain of the Romanian male, has been developed in time with the help of the "nation is a family" and the "strict father" conceptual metaphors to proscribe the existence of family narratives including ethnically diverse or any sexually different Others. The article accounts for the discursive (re-)definitions of Romanianness enabled by conceptual metaphors so as to accommodate centrally located heterosexist masculinities, and underlines the need for further explorations of the radical-right populist narratives of national purity.

  • From climates multiple to climate singular : Maintaining policy-relevance in the IPCC synthesis report
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Policy. - : Elsevier. - 1462-9011 .- 1873-6416. ; 90, s. 83-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has provided periodic assessments of the state of knowledge on climate change for 30 years. While these assessments have been central to the making of international climate policy, their relevance has been questioned in the post-Paris era. Can the IPCC's global kinds of knowledge match the demands of an increasingly decentralized and polycentric policy landscape? In this paper we respond to this question by analysing how the IPCC renders a multiple object such as climate change amenable to political intervention. We are particularly interested in the socio-material practices undertaken to translate a complex body of knowledge into a synthesis relevant to climate policy-making. To that end we trace the production of the Synthesis Report (SYR) to the IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5), from scoping, to chapter crafting and final plenary approval, using author interviews, document analysis and observations. We argue that the writing of an IPCC synthesis is a constitutive process that rests upon numerous practices of standardization, aggregation and simplification. While these practices allow the authors to produce a coherent story of global climate change, they are less attuned to demands for geographically-sensitive representations of climate impacts, vulnerabilities and a diversity of response options. As the ways of responding to a changing climate multiply, we argue, so should the understanding and making of policy-relevant knowledge.

  • Olika former av internationalisering? : Replik till Marie Demker
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Statsvetenskaplig Tidskrift. - 0039-0747. ; 111:3, s. 283-289
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • A reply to Marie Demker on Swedish, European and international political science arguing that while Demker's analysis points towards potential real problems, these issues are not as pronounced as one might believe. It is problematic and innovation threatening that theories and models in political science are driven by social scientists in the United States. However, it is not true that Sweden in this case would merely become a case study; instead Swedish political scientists are experts in the political relations of Sweden and this information can directly benefit the political scientists in other countries and thus advancing the science. While English is clearly the linuga franca of our time, Swedish is still the most popular dissertation language and Sweden is by far the most common research subject in Sweden. L. Pitkaniemi

  • La svolta dei consumatori nella responsabilità politica e nella cittadinanza
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Council of Swedish Research funded project "Political Consumption: Politics in a New Era and Arena". - Milano : Edizioni Franco Angeli. ; :3, s. 17-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Consumer Turn in Political Responsibility and Citizenship - This article investigates how and why a growing number of civil society actors increasingly turn to the market as a complement to, or replacement of, traditional tools of political participation. After a discussion about its historical antecedents, the paper focuses on the present features of political consumerism. A section dedicated to theoretical issues introduces the concept of individualized responsibilitytaking to explain why societal roles as consumers should be considered as political agents with responsibilities for others. Two more sections aree also devoted to an investigation of political consumerism. The first section distinguishes eight broad issue areas where political consumerism is to be found, and identifies the role played by civic groups in prompting consumer action. The second section reports on a number of research findings on how civic groups inform and sensitize consumers about the public orientation of their consumption practices. The article ends with a few evaluative comments on the significance of the consumer turn in politics.
