  • Policy is not enough : the influence of the gendered workplace on fathers' use of parental leave in Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Community, Work and Family. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1366-8803 .- 1469-3615. ; 22:1, s. 58-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Paid parental leave for fathers is a promising social policy tool for degendering the division of labor for childcare. Swedish fathers have had the right to paid parental leave since 1974, but they take only one-fourth of leave days parents take. There are strong cultural norms supporting involved fatherhood, so couples typically want to share leave more than they do. This article explores how workplaces can constrain Swedish fathers' use of state leave policy, in ways that fathers can take for granted, a topic that has received less attention than individual or family-related obstacles. Based on interviews with 56 employees in five large private companies, we found that masculine workplace norms can make it difficult for fathers to choose to take much leave, while aspects of traditional workplace structure building on these norms can negatively affect fathers' capabilities of taking much leave. Workplace culture and structure seemed to be based on assumptions that the ideal worker should prioritize work and has limited caregiving responsibilities, setting limits to fathers' ability to share leave with mothers. Gender theorists suggest such assumptions persist because of male dominance at the workplace and the endurance of gendered assumptions about the roles of men and women.

  • Fathers' depressive symptoms in the postnatal period : Prevalence and correlates in a population-based Swedish study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health. - : SAGE Publications. - 1403-4948 .- 1651-1905. ; 44:7, s. 688-694
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and correlates of depression in new fathers. Methods: A population-based sample of 885 Swedish fathers and their partners completed a questionnaire, including the EdinburghPostnatal Depression Scale at three months postpartum. Correlates of depressive symptoms were analysed with univariate andmultiple variable regression models. Results: Symptoms of depression were found in 6.3% of the fathers and 12.0% of themothers, and the point prevalence of major depression in fathers was 1.3%. The strongest correlates of depressive symptoms in fathers were problems in the partner relationship, a low educational level, previous depression, stressful life events and low partner support. The cross-sectional design could affect the magnitude of the results, and causal inferences cannot be made. Conclusions: Although the rate of depressive symptoms is lower in fathers than in mothers at three months postpartum, the associated factors are similar to those found in studies of mothers. The first visits at the childhealth centre could include a discussion with both parents about normal transition problems; balancing work, personal and family needs; and distress. When signs of distress or partner relationship difficulties are picked up,this should be followed up and support interventions offered.

  • Workplace support and European fathers' use of state policies promoting shared childcare
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Community, Work and Family. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1366-8803 .- 1469-3615. ; 22:1, s. 1-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Social policies such as paternity leave and parental leave offer fathers the opportunity to be more involved in childcare than earlier generations of fathers. While such policies are increasingly offered by governments around the world, research by the International Network on Leave Policies and Research shows that many European fathers do not take advantage of these benefits, despite fathers' growing interest in participation in early childcare. This article introduces a special issue devoted to understanding how the workplace can impact European fathers' interest in and abilities to take leave, a topic that has received relatively little research attention. The articles in the special issue suggest that barriers to European fathers' leavetaking are deeply embedded in workplace culture and work practices and will be difficult to eradicate without a dramatic challenge to the concept of the male ideal worker, who prioritizes work above family.

  • Peer Victimisation and Its Relationships with Perceptions of Body Composition
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Educational Studies. - : Routledge. - 0013-1946 .- 1532-6993 .- 0305-5698 .- 1465-3400. ; 35:3, s. 337-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study examined the links between children's exposure to peer victimisation, in terms of type and frequency, their body composition and subjective perceptions of body composition. A total of 960 Swedish 10-year-olds (515 girls and 445 boys) completed questionnaires about their peer victimisation experiences, weight and height, and perceptions of shape and stature. Results showed that whereas overweight girls reported exposure to both appearance-teasing and bullying, overweight boys mainly reported repeated experiences of appearance-teasing. When examining the relative importance of body composition (weight and height) and perceptions of body composition on peer victimisation experiences, children's negative body perceptions were more strongly associated with the outcome than were body composition. This study hence stresses that children who are victimised also seem to battle unfavourable attitudes towards their physical selves, which may cause increasing concern as the child enters adolescence.

  • "It's About Time!": Company Support for Fathers' Entitlement to Reduced Work Hours in Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Social Politics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1072-4745 .- 1468-2893. ; 23:1, s. 142-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fifteen nations offer fathers the right to reduce work hours to care for children. Incorporating a gender perspective, this study uses a mixed-methods approach to examine the implementation of this policy in the first nation to offer it, Sweden. It investigates whether the institutional and cultural environment exerts pressure on companies to facilitate fathers' hours reduction, companies' levels of support for fathers' use of this entitlement and correlates of company support. The persistence of the "male model of work" appears to be an important barrier to implementation of a policy that offers promise in offering fathers time to care.

  • How social networks influence young men to seek psychological help
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nordic Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1901-2276 .- 1904-0016. ; 73:2, s. 153-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a growing body of literature that recognizes young men’s reluctance to seek psychological help. However, how young men perceive the role of their social networks in their decision to seek help has received limited attention in research. Using thematic analysis, this study investigated 30 young men’s description of how members from three categories of their social networks: partner, family and friends have influenced them to seek psychological help and how they have experienced this influence. The results show that certain themes recur between various members of men's social networks while others were unique to roles in the social network. How this information can be used to make it easier for young men to seek psychological help is discussed. © 2020 The Editors of Nordic Psychology.

  • Violence in Close Relationships, Sexual Risk taking, and Help-seeking among Young Men
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    •  In close relationships and through sexual intimacy, most adolescents and young adults have opportunities to develop the ability to experience emo-tional intimacy and trust. This thesis focuses on problematic phenomena that can occur in these situations. Study I addressed limitations in the literature on dating violence concerning prevalence rates, dynamic risk factors, and the effectiveness of intervention programs. The results showed that preva-lence ratings of physical dating violence ranged between 10% and 20%, and that psychological/emotional violence is the most frequently experienced type of abuse. Peer influence was found to be an important risk factor for dating violence. Interventions were found to have short-term positive effects on behavioral change. In Study II, 88 adolescents participated in focus group sessions. The aim was to determine the extent to which a universal set of themes about dating violence could represent adolescents’ attitudes, as part of a study across four European countries. The study identified four superor-dinate themes: gender roles, television as an educator, perceived severity, and the decision to seek help. Study III, concerning sexual risk-taking, in-volved a survey of young men (N=452) who were testing for sexually trans-mitted infections (STIs). Results revealed that the young men had a relative-ly high average number of partners (3.8) with whom they had had unprotect-ed sex i.e., they had done so at some point in the past. In addition, almost a fifth of them were reluctant to use a condom due to erection difficulties. A relatively high proportion had been subjected to sexual coercion (14.7%). Study IV explored 30 young men’s descriptions of how members of their social networks had influenced them to seek psychological help. Results showed that young men were influenced by their networks mainly through exhortation and drawing attention to their needs. Friends who were role models were especially influential in helping them overcome obstructive masculinity norms and move from reluctance toward more constructive atti-tudes regarding help-seeking. This thesis focuses on young men’s experi-ences with relationship violence, as well as their sexual and psychological health needs, all of which have clinical implications.
