  • Problematizing parents : representations of multi-ethnic areas, youth and urban unrest
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Reimagineering the nation. - Frankfurt am Main : Peter Lang Publishing Group. - 9783631715185 - 9783631715208 - 3631715188 ; , s. 209-233
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The causes of and solutions to juvenile delinquency and social unrest amongthe youth in so-called Swedish multi-ethnic urban areas are frequently represented inpublic-institutional discourse as related to migrant parents. These are, the authors argue, consequently exposed to policies for ‘activation’, ‘responsibilisation’ and ‘normalisation’.

  • Obstacles, Achievements, And Collaboration In Swedish High School Work With Students Consuming Alcohol And Narcotics : Accounts Of Teachers, Nurses, And School Counsellors
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sociological Knowledges for Alternative Futures, the 15th European Sociological Association Conference. - Barcelona, Spain. ; , s. 2-2
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As shown in previous studies, teachers report that there is a growing need for teacher training regarding alcohol and drug abuse among adolescents, and that many teachers feel uncomfortable with the role of being both teachers and “social workers”. Previous research also indicates that children and youth with good school results and good schooling situations face a lower risk of experiencing social problems as young adults. In this on-going ethnographic study based on observations and field interviews we focus on the experiences of teachers, school nurses, and school counsellors regarding collaborative efforts in cases with young pupils with alcohol and drug abuse. Drawing on an ethnomethodological and symbolic interactionism perspective, we focus on the accounts of school staff who face pupils with these problems. We are mainly interested in 1) the organizational efforts and measures taken to enabling the schooling situation of the pupils, as well as 2) the emotional toll it has on the staff involved. We also focus on collaboration difficulties regarding schools, parents, social workers, as well as other welfare institutions. The preliminary findings suggest that there are various conflicting demands regarding the work tasks and emotional commitment of the school staff; on the one hand to ensure a good educational environment for all pupils, and on the other hand to provide emotional support to the students affected by these problems.

  • Return to work still possible after several years as a disability pensioner due to musculoskeletal disorders : a population-based study after new legislation in Sweden permitting "resting disability pension"
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Work. - 1051-9815 .- 1875-9270. ; 26:2, s. 147-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Different strategies have been used to stimulate a return to work (RTW) among individuals suffering from long-term ailments. In Sweden a new law on "resting disability pension" permits disability pensioners to go back to work without jeopardising their benefits. In this study different variables related to RTW during 2000 by means of this legislation were identified among disability pensioners with musculoskeletal disorders. Individuals in the study group, when compared to a control group, had more often been disability pensioners for several years, had additional education, estimated their previous job to have been physically strenuous to a lesser degree, were more satisfied with the treatment at the social insurance office and had a more positive self-image. This study shows that it may be meaningful to continue/resume rehabilitation efforts and to try to motivate an individual suffering from musculoskeletal disorders to return to work even after several years as a disability pensioner.

  • Anomie and collaboration in intelligence and operational police and border guard work in the Baltic Sea area : In-group mentality and construction of the Other
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Police Education: Altius – Fortius – Diutius, 8th Nordic Police Research Conference. - : Police University College, Tampere, Finland.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The risks and insecurities emphasised in contemporary societies have given rise to diverse forms of policing, such as transnational, intelligence- and operative-based police collaborations. The purpose of this ethnographic study is to analyse the collaborative work among intelligence and operative personnel from different border authorities in Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia. The focus of this study is how the collaboration activities created an in-group mentality among the participating officers which was contrasted with another category, that of the “norm-dissolving Russian”. This category included concepts such as being a spy, a criminal and a potential military threat, and became a sort of "Other" that reinforced their own in-group bonds. Intelligence and operative personnel present in the analysed collaborative sequences create their professional identities by contrasting themselves with these categories. They build up a kind of group feeling and present a particular moral order that is created and re-created during their collaborative work. The norm-stable and the threatening norm-dissolving moralities are created within the interaction – especially when meeting work groups that differ from their own normative code. Morality is thus created and re-created in the encounter with people that are associated with being the “enemy”, present in the situation both in physical and invisible form.

  • School as a protection factor and crime prevention arena
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: (Il)legal organizations and crime. Challenges for contemporary criminology. 21st Annual Conference of the European Society of Criminology. - Bucharest, Romania. ; , s. 15-15
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Researchers of crime prevention and control have in the last decades noticed significant changes in societal responses to criminal justice, such as privatisation of security governance and informal social control exerted by organisations and communities beyond the justice system. Previous studies have also suggested that a growing number of school staff experience their work as reaching far beyond the school environment resembling that of police officers. This ethnographic study is based on observations and field interviews with school staff with experience of working with pupils who have issues of alcohol or drug abuse, drug trafficking or other criminal behaviour. Drawing on experiences of teachers, school nurses, school police officers, and school hosts this study focuses on crime prevention efforts that are enforced by some Swedish upper secondary schools. The accounts reveal that several crime prevention measures are taken by the school staff such as for example surveillance and close collaboration with the police. A few schools have enrolled “school host” with the task of detecting illicit behaviour and preventing that drug trafficking occurs in the schools. The findings suggest that the upper secondary schools take much responsibility in crime prevention and are thus part of an informal culture of control.

  • Quality of life among early retirees
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Experimental Aging Research, 25(4). ; , s. 471-475
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Explanatory variables concerning poor quality of life (QL) were established among disability pensioners with musculoskeletal disorders and a control group. In both groups health status, leisure time activities, and social network were important for QL. Among the retirees immigration, employment before retirement and a negative attitude to the disability pension were related to poor QL.

  • In search of legitimacy - registered nurses' experience of providing palliative care in a municipal context
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - : Wiley. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 27:3, s. 651-658
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The palliative care approach was originally developed for hospice care and for persons with cancer diseases, but has gradually expanded to embrace other contexts and people of all ages, with various life-threatening diseases. The palliative care concept thus also applies to older people and the context of municipal care, where Registered Nurses (RNs) hold key care provision positions. The municipal context is not, however, focused primarily on advanced nursing care, and it is important to highlight RNs’ prerequisites for care provision.Aim: The study’s aim was to describe RNs’ experience of providing palliative care for older people in a municipal context. Data were collected through focus group discussions with 20 RNs from four different municipalities in southern Sweden and were analysed using conventional content analysis.Findings: The results showed that the nurses experienced that it was they who cushioned the effects of unclear responsibilities between different organizations, but had limited legitimacy in the municipal context and in relation to other care providers. The results also showed that nurses lacked proper support and prerequisites for providing high-quality palliative care to older dying patients. Conclusion: The results pinpoint the importance of increased acknowledgement of nurses’ knowledge and skills and a critical view on the effects of moving towards an organization composed of different consultants, which can lead to even more unclear responsibility for nursing care provision.

  • Organizational Hindrances to the Retention of Older Healthcare Workers.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Working Life Studies. - : Det Kgl. Bibliotek/Royal Danish Library. - 2245-0157. ; 10:1, s. 41-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish healthcare sector is currently experiencing recruitment difficulties combined with increasing demand for healthcare services. This study accordingly seeks knowledge of the obstacles to and opportunities for retaining older employees in the Swedish healthcare sector. Results of interviews with line managers and human resource (HR) partners indicate that the informants have positive attitudes toward older healthcare workers in general, particularly acknowledging their contributions based on long experience and skill. However, line managers’ high workload, the absence of age-management strategies, and universal HR policies not conducive to older workers’ individual needs are considered obstacles to retention on an organizational level. To retain older healthcare workers and maintain their ability and motivation, the healthcare sector and especially HR strategies need to be more proactive in addressing these issues, and formalized policies are required in order to benefit from the potential labor reserve that older employees constitute.
