- This article is based on data gathered through 60 qualitative interviews conducted within the realm of three research projects that have used "culture-appropriate lenses" to study the postmigration situation of late-in-life Iranian immigrants to Sweden. The findings gathered through these studies were interpreted against the backdrop that culturally appropriate nursing theories provide. This meant that it was, at times, these elders' backgrounds as cultural "others" that were implicitly used to make sense of the various issues that were brought to the fore by these studies. The particular issue with which this article is concerned is the "unusualness" of these elders' explanatory models of illness. Inspired by the concept definition of situation in the symbolic interactionist perspective and by the feeling that this perspective might bring about a different interpretation of the original findings regarding their understandings of illness and disease, we set out to conduct a secondary analysis of these elders explanatory models of illness. The findings presented in this article will show how the elderly Iranian immigrants interviewed in these three studies utilize the process of "late in life migration" as a point of reference for their understandings of what has caused the illnesses from which they suffered. Hereby we will suggest that the "unusualness" of their explanatory models of illness might be best understood if we focus on what they shared as immigrants (i.e., the fact that the process of late-in-life migration has made their culture obsolete) as opposed to what they shared as Iranians (i.e., their culture of origin).

- Allt fler ungdomar studerar vid högskola innan de går ut i arbetslivet. För många sker utträdet på arbetsmarknaden utan större problem, men detta gäller inte alla.I denna rapport betonas vikten av kunskap om villkoren och förutsättningarna för dem som går ut på arbetsmarknaden efter högskolestudier. En utförlig diskussion förs om de begränsningar och möjligheter som finns att med registerdataanalysen som metod få fram sådan kunskap.I jämförelse med andra länder har Sverige mycket goda förutsättningar att utnyttja registerdata för forsknings- och utredningsarbete. Och när det gäller etableringen på arbetsmarknaden kan befintliga registerdata användas för att belysa både strukturella och individbaserade aspekter.Metodutveckling och fördjupade studier på detta område kan leda fram till mer nyanserade sätt att mäta och beskriva etableringsprocessen. Och ytterst kanske till en säkrare kunskap om hur det går för de studenter som lämnat högskolan, vilket bör vara av värde för många intressenter – alltifrån presumtiva och aktiva högskolestuderande till utbildningsanordnare inom högskolesektorn samt olika myndigheter, organisationer och företag.

ArbetsDax – för psykiskt funktionshindrade : Talet om klienter, samordnare och samverkan i en verksamhet för arbetslivsinriktad rehabilitering

- Efter den rikspolitiska psykiatrireformen i mitten av 1990-talet inrättades runt om i Sverige rehabiliteringsverksamheter för psykiskt funktionshindrade människor. Det ansågs då viktigt att utveckla samverkan mellan berörda myndigheter och andra organisationer för att de psykiskt funktionshindrade inte skulle hamna ”mellan stolarna”. I Eskilstuna inrättades en arbetslivsinriktad interorganisatorisk rehabiliteringsverksamhet kallad ArbetsDax, med en ny yrkesgrupp av professionella på operativ nivå som kallades samordnare.Syftet med rapporten är att utifrån olika empiriska material bidra till förståelsen av verksamhetens diskursiva karaktär, det vill säga språkbrukets betydelse inom verksamheten, och till förståelsen av samordnarens yrkesroll. Det förstnämnda är intressant utifrån antagandet att språkbruket har en central roll i verksamheten. Det sistnämnda är intressant utifrån antagandet att ArbetsDax samordnare kan bidra med något kvalitativt/kvantitativt annorlunda än yrkesgrupper på de rena myndigheter, främst försäkringskassan och arbetsförmedlingen, som ArbetsDax samverkar med.Verksamhetens diskursiva karaktär framstår i analysen av verksamhetsdokument, intervjuer och observationer som ett komplext konsensusarbete med särskilt fokus på klienter, samordnare och samverkan. Klienten framställs som en kluven identitet: å ena sidan som en aktiv individ med den ”rätta” viljan enligt arbetslinjen, å andra sidan som en passiviserad individ med en begränsad förmåga p.g.a. psykiska funktionshinder. Samordnaren framställs som en komplex och gränsöverskridande profession som ska utföra ett konsensusarbete med klienterna, exempelvis i form av ett motivationsarbete för att transformera betalningsmaktens tvång över klienten (i huvudsak från försäkringskassans sida) till klientens ”fria” vilja. Samordnaren har också att sträva efter konsensus i relation till andra myndigheters representanter och de arbetsgivare som klienterna ska arbetsträna hos. Samverkan framställs i form av direktiv för och problematiseringar av rehabiliteringsverksamheten. Detta sker bland annat med hjälp av intertextuella legitimitetsreferenser i policydokument för verksamheten, samt med hjälp av den centrala metaforen rehabiliteringskedjan som ordnar de samverkande myndigheterna i förhållande till klienternas ”rehabiliteringskarriär”. Stort fokus finns på språkliga skillnader mellan organisationerna, med strävan efter konsensus genom att på mer eller mindre subtila vis försöka mildra åtskillnaden. I analysen framstår ändå försäkringskassan som ”blåslampa”, arbetsförmedlingen som ”bromskloss” och kommunen som ”försvarare” av verksamheten.Samordnarens professionskaraktär analyseras genom jämförelser med två teorier: dels Roine Johanssons teori om strukturella dimensioner för gräsrotsbyråkrater inom rena myndigheter som försäkringskassan och arbetsförmedlingen, och dels Mats Börjesson & Eva Palmblads samt Annette Carstens teori om den nutida välfärdsarbetarens språkliga praktik. Analysen visar att samordnaren framstår som en gräsrotsbyråkratisk profession med tämligen stort handlingsutrymme, men därutöver som en gränsöverskridande ”hybridprofession” vars insats till stor del består i ett konsensusarbete i relation till klienter, samverkande organisationsrepresentanter, arbetsgivare hos vilka klienterna arbetstränar, samt i relation till betalningsmakten (i första hand försäkringskassan).I rapportens senare del fördjupas diskussionen om samordnaren som en profession som inte endast fokuserar på klientens förmåga och vilja, utan även på dennes spontana lust. Samtidigt framstår ArbetsDax som ett försök att utveckla välfärdsarbetets organisation i riktning bort från forna tiders omyndigförklarande socialpolitik, bland annat genom att skapa den nya professionen samordnare.

A Cry for Care But not Justice : Embodied Vulnerabilities and the Moral Economy of Child Welfare

- This study explores the pivotal role of the body for political recognition and rights claims in child welfare "moral" interventions. I examine how the bodily figures in child welfare assessments, linking these manifestations to the concept of the moral economy of care. A sample of assessment reports from a Swedish municipality, all addressing violations of children's bodies or integrity, are used as empirical material. I show how the psychosomatically suffering child is being best "heard" as vulnerable. I also argue that such a moral economy of care silences children's accounts of gendered and racial injustices. Furthermore, racialized moral divides are indicated when assessments of different child bodies are considered. A concluding remark points to need for a child welfare moral economy of social justice that responds to structural intersecting injustices in childhoods, including to those of a racialized child welfare and its individualized and symptom-oriented services.

My Friend Who Never Let Me Down : Ambiguous Emotions at Pet Cemeteries

- Pets are liminal creatures: they are regarded as friends and family while they are, at the same time, considered to be belongings. Violence against pets is highly socially stigmatizing in most contexts, but at the same time, owners of companion animals may chose to end their pets’ lives without facing legal charges. There is a general idea, present both in research and popular culture, of a widespread norm against strong emotional responses to the passing of a pet. The reason would be that pets are not considered fully human, and grieving pets in a way similar to human mourning would challenge the boundary between humans and other animals. Yet, there are numerous products and services specifically designed for bereaved pet owners: condolence cards, bereavement counseling, popular psychology books—and pet cemeteries. Through an ethnographic study of pet cemeteries in Sweden, Finland and Norway, we show how pets’ ambiguous status is conveyed through tombstones, decorations and the practices of cemetery visits. Relying on photographs, field notes, interviews with key informants, and the studied pet cemetery organizations’ documentation, we explore the material and meaning-making practices that make these places possible. We suggest that these spaces enable a double sense of pets’ life: pets are simultaneously grieved as human-like friends and family members through anthropocentric gestures, and as nonhuman others through innovative and norm-challenging ways of grieving. Drawing on Judith Butler’s writing on grief, and Giorgio Agambens’ conceptualization of “the animal,” we discuss how practices at pet cemeteries convey abstract and sometimes ambiguous understandings of what life is.

Who Counts as a Sexual Subject? The Impact of Ableist Rhetoric for People with Intellectual Disability in Sweden

- Introduction: The ableist rhetoric around sexuality in disability services and beyond can hinder subjective sexual expression and have a powerful impact on health, self-esteem, and everyday life through internalized ableism, structural marginalization, and interpersonal discrimination. The aim of this study was to explore the ableist rhetoric of sexuality and its impact on sexual scripting for people with intellectual disability. Methods: A thematic analysis was carried out on data generated through ethnographic fieldwork at five sheltered accommodations and semi-structured interviews with ten individuals with intellectual disability. Results: The results show that people in Sweden with intellectual disability are desexualized within a moral order that is maintained in post-institutional social care. Through this moral order, which is deeply embedded in an ableist rhetoric about sexual relationships, sexual scripting for disabled people is constrained both inside post-institutional social care initiatives, and in the broader community of “ableist environments.” In response, disabled people employ various strategies of resistance. Conclusions: A rhetoric of positive sexuality should be a guiding principle for successfully supporting the development of sexual agency on each individual’s own term. Policy Implications: We conclude by encouraging the development of initiatives that will empower and support people with intellectual disability to learn about their sexual rights and to find solutions that allow for development of sexual agency and subjectivity.

- Informed by a social constructionist approach, this article reviews and evaluates the research literature on elderly immigrants in Sweden, shedding light on how a specific category is created and comes to be regarded as a social problem. There is a pervasive 'problematisation' of elderly immigrants in Sweden. The paper argues that a social category of 'elderly immigrants' has been constructed among those concerned with elderly care and policy, even though there is ample evidence that the elderly group is exceptionally diverse and that, apart from a non-Swedish background, the various constituent groups have little in common. They have nonetheless been consistently approached as if they were an easily identifiable and homogeneous social category posing an unusual challenge for elderly-care planners and providers. Thus, as a socially constructed 'problem, these elders seem to have become yet another 'Other' in Swedish society.

- This book aims to unravel how rural gender regimes are constituted, enforced, made sense of and resisted, and ho struggles of resistance lead to empowerment and change in various countries in the four corners of Europe as well s Australia and India. The book focuses on the intricate relationship between laws and institutions and everyday life. It analyzes on the one hand how laws and institutions are constituted and on the other hand how gender regimes are built at the local rural level, sometimes in compliance with these frames and sometimes contesting them, The articles, in diverse ways, give voice both to women’s struggles for recognition and men’s voices in gendered rural societies. Through applying the concept of the welfare state and gender regimes within rural research, this book contributes to the further development of a comparative theoretical framework for rural gender studies. The importance of integrating rural gender studies into both the mainstreams of rural and feminist research has been emphasized in previous research, as has that of developing comparative analytical frameworks. The conceptual framework adopted in this volume wets out to meet this challenge by approaching rural gender relations and the meeting point of two core research areas: gender regimes and rural transformative processes. Research into gender regimes offers a promising analytical framework for comparing gender relations in diverse rural settings. At the same time, by addressing rural concerns deriving from the specificity of rural transition processes and gender regimes, the approach also contributes to an elucidation of the complexity of citizenship.

- The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the concept of social capital and to distinguish its different forms, focusing on their potential effects on health. According to many scholars, social capital comprises social networks, norms of reciprocity or social support and social trust. In this article the core element, the social network, has been further distinguished by the direction of ties and levels of formality, strength and diversity. In the past few years there has been increased interest in social capital in the health field and a great deal of research has suggested that social capital is generally positively related to health. However, little research has been conducted into how different forms of social capital or social networks influence health. What is the difference, for instance, between bonding and bridging social capital in terms of health outcomes? It is important to distinguish the different forms because they imply different resources, support and obligations. More research needs to be conducted into the different forms of social capital and their effects on health. A special focus should be placed on the health impacts of cross-cutting - or bridging and linking - forms of social capital.
