  • Western life courses challenged in life stories collected in contemporary China
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers In Public Health. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-2565. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: The life course describes the progression of life as a social role, from birth to death. Traditional Western life-history studies of the life course usually describe a continuous lifeline with occasional interruptions in between. The extraordinary temporal events of the Anti-Japanese War (AJW), Civil War (CW), Great Famine (GF), Cultural Revolution (CR), and the Reform and Opening-up of China in just few decades mean that the life history of contemporary Chinese older adults may be quite different from those of their western peers. Methods: The study used qualitative research methods to conduct in-depth interviews with 16 older adults and collect their life stories through a standardized list of questions. Grounded theory was employed to condense, compare, conceptualize, and synthesize patterns within the collected data, approaching the investigation with a “naturalistic” perspective. Results: Based on a generalized analysis of the Interview transcripts, we can find that Chinese old adults’ life stories were shaped by recurring exceptional and rapidly changing environmental conditions. The themes and sub-themes of Chinese old adults’ life stories were focus on (1) violence, loss of family member, escape and unstable life in their early life which are related to AJW and CW; (2) poverty and starvation in daily life when they were adolescents and young adults which are related to GF; (3) discontinuity, timed opportunities, categorizations in order to split the social relationships and networks in CR. The data also suggest that education is an important part of the life story and that its value changes over time.Discussion: The discontinuity and instability of the life stories of the Chinese old adults are unexpected according to the dominant Western-influenced life course theories, which enriches life course theory and provides a new perspective for studying the individual life course in a society of constant and rapid change.

  • Can modernization generate productive aging? : Some Swedish experiences
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Productive Engagement in Later Life. - Beijing : China Society Press. - 9787508736112 ; , s. 107-122
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The chapter deals with the question how old pensions and care work for old people have been discussed earlier and at presnt in Sweden. The chapeter starts with a brief overview if the Swedish welfare model, focussed on two distinct periods: the 1950s - 1960s with a rapid econmic growth and the present period of economic decline. After a long expansion period of a tax - financed public sector under the name of "productive welfare strategy", calculations indicated a state economy in imbalance. Resources did not increase at the same pace as the numbers of elderly. An organizationnal reconstruction of the public sector started with market solutions, encouragement of an increase in voluntary work and family based care. A new pensions system was introduced in the 1990s, and higher expectations of quality at a lower cost turned questions of staff teaining and qualifications to highly strategical themes. A new anti-discrimination Act came into force in 2009. The chapter is finalized by a presentation of some of the research performed within the research profile Care Work and Social Gerontology at the Department of Social Work at Umea University. Issues like social capital and care work, old womens life stories, family obligations in transition, attitudes to old people including ageism as well as training for care workers are issues researched within the team. (The chapter is written in Chinese)

  • Sense of security among people aged 65 and 75 : external and inner sources of security
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advanced Nursing. - : Blackwell Publishing Ltd. - 0309-2402 .- 1365-2648. ; 67:6, s. 1305-1316
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim.  This paper is a report of a study exploring possible external and inner sources of the sense of security felt by older people aged 65 and 75. Background.  The concept of ‘security’ has been parsimoniously defined and explored, especially as pertains to older people, and previous research has primarily focused on risks in relation to individuals’ declining health and functional ability. Methods.  In 2005, population-based cross-sectional surveys were carried out in 15 municipalities in Västerbotten, Sweden and 18 municipalities in Ostrobothnia, Finland. A 15-page questionnaire (84 questions) was distributed, with the final total response rate reaching 68·4% (n = 3370): 1825 Swedish-speaking Swedes, 926 Swedish-speaking Finns and 621 Finnish-speaking Finns. The statistical analysis was three-stage, including nominal stepwise regressions. Results.  Older people who indicate that they are ‘very secure’ are more likely to consider life meaningful and are able to master various life crises. Moreover, they possess confidence in economic institutions and are more likely to feel economically secure. Weak trust in family and friends or neighbours and decreased functional ability seem to indicate a subjective feeling of ‘insecurity’. Conclusion.  Caregivers in health care should focus more on supporting older persons’ meaningfulness in life and how their feelings of security can be strengthened by trusting relationships and activities. In nursing, there should be more focus on developing knowledge of inner health resources, including positive life orientation and meaningfulness in life.

  • Caring and the generation of social capital : two models for a positive relationship
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Social Welfare. - Oxford UK and Malden USA : Blackwell Publishing. - 1369-6866 .- 1468-2397. ; 21:1, s. 44-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When caring is linked to social capital it is generally assumed that the nature of the relationship is that social capital is a resource that can be used for care work. When there is inadequate funding of aged care services by the State then social capital may be seen as a substitute for economic and human capital. Caring therefore is seen as a drain on capital. However, this does not have to be the case. Aged care services, if thoughtfully designed, can not only consume social capital but also generate it. Two models of elder care, one Swedish and one Australian, have been identified which specifically address the generation of social capital. In each case the services and facilities have been developed by third sector organisations with a strong community development focus often in the face of resistance from state run or medically oriented services.

  • Social care in ageing Sweden : learning from life stories of care recipients
  • 2015. - 1
  • Ingår i: Population aging from a lifecourse perspective. - Bristol : Policy Press. - 9781447310716 ; , s. 183-202
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ageing populations comprise of many frail individuals who need care and support. In some cases, this need exceeds the help that families can provide. When this happens, social care services come into play. However, the help and support that older people need is not uniform. The challenges that older people face differ, and so do the support strategies that older people prefer. Consequently, social care providers need a deeper understanding of life-courses if they want to design care services that suit the older individuals’ needs and that can easily be understood and accepted by the older individuals. This chapter explains how social care providers can learn from the life-courses of the care-recipients, using older migrants in Sweden as an example.
