  • Barns vardag med knapp ekonomi : En studie om barns erfarenheter och strategier
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is about the every day life of children who suffer from economic hardship. The aim is, from the children's point of view, to create an understanding of the consequences that economic hardship has on their relationships with their parents and other children. A further aim is to gain an understanding of how children act in relation to the families' economic situation and how they experience their every day life and general living conditions. Parents have also been interviewed about the families' general living conditions and the interaction between children and parents in relation to the economic situation. The empirical data has been collected over a period of fourteen months. Fourteen children aged 7-19 years and eight parents in seven families have been interviewed on five occasions. A total of 44 interviews have been conducted. The theoretical foundation of the thesis is childhood sociology, symbolic interactionism and social identity. The conclusions of this thesis can be summarized in two major results. The first is that economic hardship is of importance in the relationship with other children and in the interaction between children and their parents. The children's possibilities of participating together with peers through possessions and activities are affected to a varying extent depending on the circumstances. The relationship with their parents is also affected by children having to take economic responsibility and by children cooperating with them. Economic hardship also causes a strain on the relationship. The second major result is that children are active in forming theirs and their families' every day life in relation to the economic limits. On the basis of their understanding and their definition of the situation they choose different strategies, the aims of which are either to live within the limitations of the situation, so-called reactive strategies, or to change their own situation and sometimes also the situation of their household. These are defined as proactive strategies in the thesis.

  • Child-centered social work practice : three unique meanings in the context of looking after children and the assessment framwork in Australia, Canada and Sweden
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Children and youth services review. - New York : Pergamon Press. - 0190-7409 .- 1873-7765. ; 32:3, s. 452-459
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores different orientations to child-centered social work as conveyed in the training materials and guidelines of Looking After Children and Assessment Framework in Australia, Canada and Sweden. ‘Child centered’ is shaped by contextual factors and influences social work practices. We found differences in these approaches as needs based and/or rights based and in relation to how each emphasizes the three P's — Provision, Protection and Participation. Substantial differences were identified both in how references to a child-centered approach appear in theoretical frameworks, values, motives and use of concepts in training materials and guidelines, and in the instructions given as to how to apply these approaches. It appears that Australia balances needs and rights, while Canada is more needs-oriented and Sweden more rights-oriented. Swedish materials show a more explicit emphasis on participation than Australian and Canadian materials. Differences between the three countries indicate the importance of structural, contextual factors shaping orientations to child-centered practice.

  • Stadsbarndom : Om barns vardag i en modern förort
  • 1998
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Children's conditions in urban environments are an important theme for understanding modern childhood, yet children have rarely been asked about their views of urban childhood conditions. The aim of the dissertation is: To describe the experts' attempts to create good conditions for growing up in an urban environment. This is summed up as "perspectives thought out for the children". To investigate, describe, and analyse the physical and socio-cultural environment from the children's perspective in a modern suburb. The study is limited to children aged 9-10 and their everyday life outside school and the recreation centre. To test different qualitative methods for gaining insight into children's perspectives on their immediate environment and everyday life in a modern suburb. The empirical study comprises 28 children living in a suburb built in the 1970s with about 11,000 inhabitants, in the south of Sweden. The study was carried out as a case study using compositions, diaries, drawings, photographs (taken by the children), individual interviews, walks through the area together with children, and group interviews - with the author present at all stages. The experience of using several different methods is predominantly positive for obtaining reliable knowledge through children. From the children's way of describing and showing how they see and take advantage of affordances in the housing area, it is clear that there is agreement between the "perspectives thought out for the children" and the children's own perspectives as regards the planning of the area with regard to the children's needs for service, physical security, and opportunities for play. There are large individual differences between children as regards patterns of movement, activities, and experiences. On the other hand, there are no palpable differences between boys and girls in these respects. Both negative and positive views of the physical and the social environment are represented. There are both dangers and security-creating factors in the neighbourhood. Children participate to a large extent in creating their own living spaces, both individually and collectively. They use the physical and social environment in their meaning creation, their identity development, their striving for competence, and their processing of experience.
