  • Civil Society Organizations Going European? : The Europeanization of Swedish CSOs
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: SAGE Open. - : SAGE Open. - 2158-2440. ; 5:2, s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores factors that influence Swedish civil society organizations’ (CSOs) degree of activity at different geographical and administrative levels and, in particular, how they are affected by processes of Europeanization in the social welfare policy area. The present study is based on a national survey and includes approximately 1,600 Swedish CSOs. Despite the often claimed mismatch between the Swedish welfare model and European Union (EU) level social policy measures, EU membership has opened a new level of opportunities for activities for Swedish CSOs. The results show that Swedish CSOs are mostly active at the local level and very seldom at the European level. The strongest factor contributing to Swedish CSOs’ degree of activity at the European level is the perceived relevance of this level. Furthermore, resources have a great impact. CSOs that can claim strong representativeness and that have access to employed staff are more likely to be Europeanized.

  • Social workers' attitudes to privatization in five countries
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Social Work. - : SAGE Publications. - 1741-296X .- 1468-0173.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • European welfare states have been subject to significant restructuring including a general trend towards downsizing the role of the state, and to a greater extent engaging other actors in social policy and social services. While comparative welfare research often overlooks the distinction between for-profit and non-profit actors, third sector research emphasizes the different logics underlying these two types of non-state actors. The purpose of this article was to analyse Nordic and Italian social workers' attitudes towards a greater involvement of for-profit and non-profit actors in social work. The empirical base for the study is nation-wide surveys among social workers in four Nordic countries and in Italy answered by a total of 8,272 social workers. Findings In general, social workers perceived privatization in terms of for-profit organizations more critically than privatization through voluntary sector actors. Their attitudes towards privatization were only partly connected to which welfare model they worked within. Age and working sector of the respondents were other factors of significance. An important finding was that there are different explanatory factors behind positive attitudes towards for-profit and non-profit privatization, which indicate that social workers do not interpret the role of for-profit and non-profit organizations in the same way. Application The article shows that reforms involving subsidiarization, privatization and marketization of social welfare services should take account of the different logics underlying for-profit and non-profit actors and the different levels of trust that these actors enjoy among practitioners.

  • Mapping civil society elites: multi‑dimensional measure of resource stratifcation in civil society (MMRSC)
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Interest Groups & Advocacy. - 2047-7414 .- 2047-7422.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a novel methodological approach, multi-dimensional measure of resource stratifcation in civil society (MMRSC). The method aims at mapping civil society organisations based on diferent types of resources for studying resource stratifcation in civil society. The approach is based on six indicators consisting of economic, political, and media resources, internal and external to civil society. The MMRSC is a development and adaptation of the positional method within the elite research tradition aiming at identifying individuals holding central positions in powerful organisations. To be able to apply the positional method to civil society studies, the paper argues for a multi dimensional understanding of resources taking into account diverse organisational forms and goals within civil society. The method is presented in a systematic step-by-step structure with exemplifcations based on how it has been used in a study of civil society elites in four European countries and at the EU level.
