  • Orientations of Europe : Boats, the Mediterranean Sea and the Materialities of Contemporary Mobility Regimes
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Borderlands e-journal. - Sydney, NSW, Australia : Borderlands. - 1447-0810. ; 17:2, s. 1-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is an investigation of how the specific design and materiality of the artefact of the boat, as well as the various material, visual, technical and geographical practices at work in the space of Mediterranean Sea, orientate a specific space and produce a selective politics of seeing, saving and framing of bodies on the move. It highlights how the very presence and movement of ‘unseaworthy boats’ in this actively orientated space of the sea brings to the fore the many strategies and techniques that have been employed to make it a space of European control. We argue that this is an active and deadly orientation carried out in an often dispersed number of practices and interventions within a seemingly flat space of water. The paper concludes that border transgressors’ act of moving by boat, with all of the losses involved, both challenge and potentially reorientate European mobility regimes.

  • Quality management and health : a double connection
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Quality & Reliability Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0265-671X .- 1758-6682. ; 24:1, s. 49-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to examine and discuss the effects of quality management in the health care sector and the general effects of quality management on the health of the employees. Methodology/approach The empirical basis consists of three case studies in one industrial manufacturing company and two hospitals. The empirical data have been gathered with both qualitative and quantitative methods. Findings: The twofold value of quality management, of preventing disease by supporting more rewarding working conditions as well as improving the treatment of disease by increasing the effectiveness of health care organisations it indicated. Leadership commitment was found to be the most crucial common prerequisite for successful quality management implementation and for creating a healthy work environment. In addition, continuous improvements and participation of everybody were found to have importance for well functioning quality management as well as for health. Research limitations/implications: The paper provides additional understanding of the influence of quality management on health and a model is presented. A limitation is that the factors studied are fairly broad and for further research it will be useful to go deeper into the mechanics of them. Practical implications: The three factors leadership commitment, participation of everybody and continuous improvements have been shown to be vital contributors for health and managers should make every effort to implement them. Originality/value: The double effect of quality management on health has not been studied before and knowledge of the factors contributing to it is valuable.

  • Single shot dual-wavelength digital holography : calibration based on speckle displacements
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Optomechatronics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1559-9612 .- 1559-9620. ; 8:4, s. 326-339
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a calibration method which allows single shot dual wavelength online shape measurement in a disturbed environment. Effects of uncontrolled carrier frequency filtering are discussed as well. We demonstrate that phase maps and speckle displacements can be recovered free of chromatic aberrations. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a single shot dual wavelength calibration is reported by defining a criteria to make the spatial filtering automatic avoiding the problems of manual methods. The procedure is shown to give shape accuracy of 35 µm with negligible systematic errors using a synthetic wavelength of 1.1 mm.

  • Designing Enjoyable Motion-Based Play Interactions with a Small Humanoid Robot
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Social Robotics. - Dordrecht : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1875-4791 .- 1875-4805. ; 6:2, s. 173-193
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Robots designed to co-exist with humans in domestic and public environments should be capable of interacting with people in an enjoyable fashion in order to be socially accepted. In this research, we seek to set up a small humanoid robot with the capability to provide enjoyment to people who pick up the robot and play with it by hugging, shaking and moving the robot in various ways. Inertial sensors inside a robot can capture how its body is moved when people perform such "full-body gestures". Unclear is how a robot can recognize what people do during play, and how such knowledge can be used to provide enjoyment. People's behavior is complex, and naive designs for a robot's behavior based only on intuitive knowledge from previous designs may lead to failed interactions. To solve these problems, we model people's behavior using typical full-body gestures observed in free interaction trials, and devise an interaction design based on avoiding typical failures observed in play sessions with a naive version of our robot. The interaction design is completed by investigating how a robot can provide "reward" and itself suggest ways to play during an interaction. We then verify experimentally that our design can be used to provide enjoyment during a playful interaction. By describing the process of how a small humanoid robot can be designed to provide enjoyment, we seek to move one step closer to realizing companion robots which can be successfully integrated into human society.

  • Nonlinear modeling of reinforced dowel joints in timber structures : a combined experimental-numerical study
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Steel dowels are indispensable elements for the design of joints in modern timber structures. Dowels are broadly used because of their flexibility in design and easy assembling on-site, as well as due to their advantageous mechanical behavior. Recent developments in reinforcement techniques allow for designing ductile dowel joints, which exhibit nonlinear slip behavior. However, currently applied limit state approaches for calculation of connection strength are not able to fully exploit the potential of dowel joints. This calls for development of more advanced calculation methods, which was aimed for in this thesis. For thorough understanding of the complex mechanical behavior of dowel connections, application of a so-called multiscale approach is advantageous. Thereby, nonlinear loaddeformation behavior of dowel connections is studied on different length scales, from the scale of connection components, up to the joint level. The aim of this thesis was to exploit knowledge from lower scales in models that finally allow for nonlinear analysis of timber structures. In the work at hand, this was achieved by a combined experimental-numerical analysis.Experimental studies on the nonlinear embedment slip of ductile dowel connections, and its relation to the orthotropic material behavior of wood, was one of the objectives of this work. Breaking new ground by testing up to large dowel displacements, at various angles to the grain, for unconstrained and constrained lateral displacement conditions, required development of new testing procedures and test setups. Test results gave access to nonlinear embedment slip curves and showed their dependence on loading direction and lateral displacement conditions. In the next step, embedment slip data were exploited in modeling of single-dowel connections. Beam-on-nonlinear foundation modeling was applied for this purpose. Validation of connection tests and a parameter study not only highlighted suitability of the calculation method, but allowed for gaining insight into limit states. Thus, beam-on-foundation modeling was found to be an attractive alternative to advanced 3D FEM models for engineering design.Parameterized equations for regression analysis of nonlinear slip curves, and interaction curves describing the grain angle dependence of mechanical parameters, were summarized in a literature review. With these equations at hand, a multi-dimensional parameterization method for the nonlinear slip as a function of the load-to-grain angle was developed. This method was applied to experimental data derived in embedment and single-dowel connection tests as well as in simulations. Analytical equations for connection slip are expected to facilitate engineering modeling at the single-dowel connection and joint level, respectively.Joint modeling aimed at establishing a calculation method suitable for engineering design with an attractive trade-off between modeling effort, calculation time and accuracy. This was tackled by a semi-analytical model based on nonlinear elastic springs for the dowel slip and rigid connection members. Thereby, global joint slip, and thus stiffness and strength of joints, as well as local load distribution within joints can be predicted. This model proved to be suitable for single-dowel-based and joint-based design concepts. Calculation examples showed pronounced influence of loading direction dependence and nonlinearity of dowel slip on local load distribution, as well as on global joint slip. Influence of interaction between internal forces on the joint stiffness became obvious from structural analysis with nonlinear joint slip. This work covers a combined experimental-numerical analysis of the slip behavior of ductile dowel joints, from the wood embedment and steel dowel bending behavior, the single-dowel slip, to the joint behavior, with final application in nonlinear structural analysis. Presented models predicted nonlinear slip with suitable accuracy and efficiency. Application of nonlinear joint slip in structural analysis showed the potential of ductile dowel joints, which could be exploited in engineering design by the herein presented multiscale modeling strategy.

  • Information Needs of Gravel Road Stakeholders
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Infrastructures. - : MDPI. - 2412-3811. ; 7:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Within any ecosystem, information sharing is essential. In this paper, the Swedish gravel road ecosystem is studied, where information plays a crucial role for the effective management of operations and maintenance. However, efficient information sharing is not enabled due to the lack of appropriate information systems. For addressing this issue, this paper intends to elicit information needs of gravel road stakeholders to support the design of a cloud-based information system. The main purpose is to explore the information needs of stakeholders within the Swedish gravel road ecosystem. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews with 11 participants representing key stakeholders in the ecosystem. Template analysis was used for analyzing the interview results. The major findings were a set of information needs covering road identification and condition, weather conditions, accessibility and traffic, maintenance policy, and sensor data. The results form a comprehensive information model for the further development of a cloud-based gravel road management system that would contribute to increased traffic safety and comfort, lower maintenance and management costs, and better decision-making abilities.

  • Automation Practices in Wood Product Industries : Lessons learned, current Practices and Future Perspectives
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The 7th Swedish Production Symposium SPS, 25-27 October, 2016, Lund, Sweden. - Lund, Sweden : Lund University.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wood product industries are a cornerstone of the Swedish industry and contribute vastly to the total Swedish export value. Wood as material itself has a promising perspective of becoming one of the most valuable resources. Sweden in particular has a long tradition and the knowledge of how to cultivate forests. In comparison to the highly automated forest industries, production systems of Swedish wood products industries are mostly characterized by a low degree of automation, tough manual labour and a relative low competency of the workforce. Facing fiercer competition on a global market, Swedish wood product industries are starting to lose touch with wood working industries in other industrialized European countries. Based upon established literature, this paper systematizes the status of automation practices in wood processing industries. The outcome of this study also outlines the expected effects and the future perspectives of digitalization and robotic automation for wood processing industries in high-1are not ready to implement the necessary standards to enter Industry 4.0. Not only are the technical prerequisites not fulfilled, but also a lack of appropriate production organization, logistics and economic basis is affecting negatively.

  • Visual Analysis of Sentiment and Stance in Social Media Texts
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: EuroVis 2018 - Posters. - : Eurographics - European Association for Computer Graphics. - 9783038680659 ; , s. 49-51
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the growing interest for visualization of sentiments and emotions in textual data, the task of detecting and visualizing various stances is not addressed well by the existing approaches. The challenges associated with this task include development of the underlying computational methods and visualization of the corresponding multi-label stance classification results. In this poster abstract, we describe the ongoing work on a visual analytics platform called StanceVis Prime, which is designed for analysis of sentiment and stance in temporal text data from various social media data sources. Our approach consumes documents from several text stream sources, applies sentiment and stance classification, and provides end users with both an overview of the resulting data series and a detailed view for close reading and examination of the classifiers’ output. The intended use case scenarios for StanceVis Prime include social media monitoring and research in sociolinguistics.

  • StanceXplore : Visualization for the Interactive Exploration of Stance in Social Media
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of interactive visualization techniques in Digital Humanities research can be a useful addition when traditional automated machine learning techniques face difficulties, as is often the case with the exploration of large volumes of dynamic—and in many cases, noisy and conflicting—textual data from social media. Recently, the field of stance analysis has been moving from a predominantly binary approach—either pro or con—to a multifaceted one, where each unit of text may be classified as one (or more) of multiple possible stance categories. This change adds more layers of complexity to an already hard problem, but also opens up new opportunities for obtaining richer and more relevant results from the analysis of stancetaking in social media. In this paper we propose StanceXplore, a new visualization for the interactive exploration of stance in social media. Our goal is to offer DH researchers the chance to explore stance-classified text corpora from different perspectives at the same time, using coordinated multiple views including user-defined topics, content similarity and dissimilarity, and geographical and temporal distribution. As a case study, we explore the activity of Twitter users in Sweden, analyzing their behavior in terms of topics discussed and the stances taken. Each textual unit (tweet) is labeled with one of eleven stance categories from a cognitive-functional stance framework based on recent work. We illustrate how StanceXplore can be used effectively to investigate multidimensional patterns and trends in stance-taking related to cultural events, their geographical distribution, and the confidence of the stance classifier.
