  • Phonetic Characteristics of Domestic Cat Vocalisations
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 1st International Workshop on Vocal Interactivity in-and-between Humans, Animals and Robots, VIHAR 2017. - 9782956202905 ; , s. 5-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cat (Felis catus, Linneaus 1758) has lived around or with humans for at least 10,000 years, and is now one of the most popular pets of the world with more than 600 millionindividuals. Domestic cats have developed a more extensive, variable and complex vocal repertoire than most other members of the Carnivora, which may be explained by their social organisation, their nocturnal activity and the long period of association between mother and young. Still, we know surprisingly little about the phonetic characteristics of these sounds, and about the interaction between cats and humans.Members of the research project Melody in human–cat communication (Meowsic) investigate the prosodic characteristics of cat vocalisations as well as the communication between human and cat. The first step includes a categorisation of cat vocalisations. In the next step it will be investigated how humans perceive the vocal signals of domestic cats. This paper presents an outline of the project which has only recently started.

  • Teaching Assembly by Demonstration using Advanced Human Robot Interaction and a Knowledge Integration Framework
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Procedia Manufacturing. - : Elsevier BV. - 2351-9789. ; 11, s. 164-173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conventional industrial robots are heavily dependent on hard automation that requires pre-specified fixtures and time-consuming (re)programming performed by experienced operators. In this work, teaching by human-only demonstration is used for reducing required time and expertise to setup a robotized assembly station. This is achieved by the proposed framework enhancing the robotic system with advanced perception and cognitive abilities, accessed through a user-friendly Human Robot Interaction interface. The approach is evaluated on a small parts’ assembly use case deployed onto a collaborative industrial robot testbed. Experiments indicate that the proposed approach allows inexperienced users to efficiently teach robots new assembly tasks.

  • Analys av geografiska data
  • 2020. - 7:1
  • Ingår i: Geografisk informationsbehandling: : teori, metoder och tillämpningar - teori, metoder och tillämpningar. - 9789144131740 ; , s. 215-272

  • Visual Analysis of Sentiment and Stance in Social Media Texts
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: EuroVis 2018 - Posters. - : Eurographics - European Association for Computer Graphics. - 9783038680659 ; , s. 49-51
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the growing interest for visualization of sentiments and emotions in textual data, the task of detecting and visualizing various stances is not addressed well by the existing approaches. The challenges associated with this task include development of the underlying computational methods and visualization of the corresponding multi-label stance classification results. In this poster abstract, we describe the ongoing work on a visual analytics platform called StanceVis Prime, which is designed for analysis of sentiment and stance in temporal text data from various social media data sources. Our approach consumes documents from several text stream sources, applies sentiment and stance classification, and provides end users with both an overview of the resulting data series and a detailed view for close reading and examination of the classifiers’ output. The intended use case scenarios for StanceVis Prime include social media monitoring and research in sociolinguistics.

  • StanceXplore : Visualization for the Interactive Exploration of Stance in Social Media
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of interactive visualization techniques in Digital Humanities research can be a useful addition when traditional automated machine learning techniques face difficulties, as is often the case with the exploration of large volumes of dynamic—and in many cases, noisy and conflicting—textual data from social media. Recently, the field of stance analysis has been moving from a predominantly binary approach—either pro or con—to a multifaceted one, where each unit of text may be classified as one (or more) of multiple possible stance categories. This change adds more layers of complexity to an already hard problem, but also opens up new opportunities for obtaining richer and more relevant results from the analysis of stancetaking in social media. In this paper we propose StanceXplore, a new visualization for the interactive exploration of stance in social media. Our goal is to offer DH researchers the chance to explore stance-classified text corpora from different perspectives at the same time, using coordinated multiple views including user-defined topics, content similarity and dissimilarity, and geographical and temporal distribution. As a case study, we explore the activity of Twitter users in Sweden, analyzing their behavior in terms of topics discussed and the stances taken. Each textual unit (tweet) is labeled with one of eleven stance categories from a cognitive-functional stance framework based on recent work. We illustrate how StanceXplore can be used effectively to investigate multidimensional patterns and trends in stance-taking related to cultural events, their geographical distribution, and the confidence of the stance classifier.

  • Creating sound immission mimicking real-life characteristics from a single wind turbine
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Applied Acoustics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0003-682X .- 1872-910X. ; 143, s. 66-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a method to synthesise wind turbine sounds to be used in sleep studies using a parameter-based synthesis. The parameter values were determined using recordings of several types of operating wind turbines, thorough investigations of the recorded sounds, previous reports on wind turbine sound characteristics, and acoustic knowledge on how sound properties change from source to an outdoor receiver. The different wind turbine types are shown in the paper to have characteristic amplitude modulation (AM) spectra, with different AM strengths in different 1/3 octave bands. The statistical levels of the AM are evaluated and the correlation between A-weighted AM and AM in individual 1/3 octave bands is evaluated using linear regression. Method tests of the proposed synthesis technique show that it performs well and that wind turbine sound signals that include arbitrary AM spectra can be created. The work was part of the research project WiTNES (Wind Turbine Noise Effects on Sleep). (C) 2018 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

  • Re-examination of accelerometer data processing and calibration for the assessment of physical activity intensity.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0905-7188 .- 1600-0838. ; 29:10, s. 1442-1452
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This review reexamines use of accelerometer and oxygen uptake data for assessment of activity intensity. Accelerometers capture mechanical work, while oxygen uptake captures the energy cost of this work. Frequency filtering needs to be considered when processing acceleration data. A too restrictive filter attenuates the acceleration signal for walking and, to a higher degree, for running. This measurement error affects shorter (children) more than taller (adults) individuals due to their higher movement frequency. Less restrictive filtering includes more movement related signals and provide measures that better capture mechanical work, but may include more noise. An optimal filter cut-point is determined where most relevant acceleration signals are included. Further, accelerometer placement affects what part of mechanical work being captured. While the waist placement captures total mechanical work and therefore contributes to measures of activity intensity equivalent by age and stature, the thigh and wrist placements capture more internal work and do not provide equivalent measures. Value calibration of accelerometer measures is usually performed using measured oxygen uptake with the metabolic equivalent of task (MET) as reference measure of activity intensity. However, the use of MET is not stringent and is not a measure of activity intensity equivalent by age and stature. A candidate measure is the mass-specific net oxygen uptake, VO2 net (VO2 tot - VO2 stand). To improve measurement of physical activity intensity using accelerometers, research developments are suggested concerning processing of accelerometer data, use of energy expenditure as reference for activity intensity, and calibration procedure with absolute versus relative intensity.
