  • Single shot dual-wavelength digital holography : calibration based on speckle displacements
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Optomechatronics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1559-9612 .- 1559-9620. ; 8:4, s. 326-339
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a calibration method which allows single shot dual wavelength online shape measurement in a disturbed environment. Effects of uncontrolled carrier frequency filtering are discussed as well. We demonstrate that phase maps and speckle displacements can be recovered free of chromatic aberrations. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a single shot dual wavelength calibration is reported by defining a criteria to make the spatial filtering automatic avoiding the problems of manual methods. The procedure is shown to give shape accuracy of 35 µm with negligible systematic errors using a synthetic wavelength of 1.1 mm.

  • Elderly People's Perceptions of a Telehealthcare System : Relative Advantage, Compatibility, Complexity and Observability
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of technology in human services. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1522-8835 .- 1522-8991. ; 31:3, s. 218-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of telehealthcare systems to promote independent living for elderly people is growing. The results presented in this article, derived from an initial user lab test of a telecare system-GiraffPlus-indicate that the crucial factor for adoption of telehealthcare systems is not usability but the system's ability to support autonomy in everyday life. Eleven users tested the usability and reported what they perceived as possible benefits of having such a system at home. To support autonomy, customization is crucial for the system to be perceived as meaningful for the individual. Our analysis confirms previous research. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

  • INDUSTRIAL NANOPARTICLES HEALTH RISKS AND ADVANTAGES OF A DECENT INDUSTRIAL VENTILATION SYSTEM IN REDUCING THE RELATED RISKS
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: INDUSTRIAL NANOPARTICLES HEALTH RISKS AND ADVANTAGES OF A DECENT INDUSTRIAL VENTILATION SYSTEM IN REDUCING THE RELATED RISKS. ; , s. -6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the fast-growing use of nanoparticles (NPs) in a wide range of production and manufacturing processes, and great health and environmental risks associated to NPs, it is important to treat the industry-produced NPs in a proper way. Ventilation of industrial workplaces lies within the concept of sustainability challenges for the development of nanoproducts. Due to the decreased grain size of material to nano limits and thus the appearance of either new or changed properties, health risk of workers in such environments is critical concerning the complicated and unknown characteristics of nanoparticles. There is great evidence over the past few years that ultrafine particles and especially NPs in the breathing air are strong toxins. Different mitigation measures for air-borne nanoparticles in industrial workplaces are substitution, engineering controls such as ventilation and provision of personal protective equipment. In this paper selection criteria for ventilation systems and different ventilation methods (hood ventilation and global enclosure/room ventilation systems) as engineering controls of nanoparticles within industrial enclosures will be reviewed. Novel methods for improvement of ventilation efficiency in general and industrial work places with an eye on ventilation of nanoparticles will be presented.

  • Brain tumor modeling : glioma growth and interaction with chemotherapy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Graphic and Image Processing (ICGIP 2011). - : SPIE. ; 8285
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In last decade increasingly mathematical models of tumor growths have been studied, particularly on solid tumors which growth mainly caused by cellular proliferation. In this paper we propose a modified model to simulate the growth of gliomas in different stages. Glioma growth is modeled by a reaction-advection-diffusion. We begin with a model of untreated gliomas and continue with models of polyclonal glioma following chemotherapy. From relatively simple assumptions involving homogeneous brain tissue bounded by a few gross anatomical landmarks (ventricles and skull) the models have been expanded to include heterogeneous brain tissue with different motilities of glioma cells in grey and white matter. Tumor growth is characterized by a dangerous change in the control mechanisms, which normally maintain a balance between the rate of proliferation and the rate of apoptosis (controlled cell death). Result shows that this model closes to clinical finding and can simulate brain tumor behavior properly.

  • An Alternative Myoelectric Pattern Recognition Approach for the Control of Hand Prostheses : A Case Study of Use in Daily Life by a Dysmelia Subject
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2168-2372. ; 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The functionality of upper limb prostheses can be improved by intuitive control strategies that use bioelectric signals measured at the stump level. One such strategy is the decoding of motor volition via myoelectric pattern recognition (MPR), which has shown promising results in controlled environments and more recently in clinical practice. Moreover, not much has been reported about daily life implementation and real-time accuracy of these decoding algorithms. This paper introduces an alternative approach in which MPR allows intuitive control of four different grips and open/close in a multifunctional prosthetic hand. We conducted a clinical proof-of-concept in activities of daily life by constructing a self-contained, MPR-controlled, transradial prosthetic system provided with a novel user interface meant to log errors during real-time operation. The system was used for five days by a unilateral dysmelia subject whose hand had never developed, and who nevertheless learned to generate patterns of myoelectric activity, reported as intuitive, for multi-functional prosthetic control. The subject was instructed to manually log errors when they occurred via the user interface mounted on the prosthesis. This allowed the collection of information about prosthesis usage and real-time classification accuracy. The assessment of capacity for myoelectric control test was used to compare the proposed approach to the conventional prosthetic control approach, direct control. Regarding the MPR approach, the subject reported a more intuitive control when selecting the different grips, but also a higher uncertainty during proportional continuous movements. This paper represents an alternative to the conventional use of MPR, and this alternative may be particularly suitable for a certain type of amputee patients. Moreover, it represents a further validation of MPR with dysmelia cases.

  • Validity and responsiveness of at-home touch-screen assessments in advanced Parkinson's disease
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE journal of biomedical and health informatics. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2168-2194 .- 2168-2208. ; 19:6, s. 1829-1834
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate if a telemetry test battery can be used to measure effects of Parkinson’s disease (PD) treatment intervention and disease progression in patients with fluctuations. Sixty-five patients diagnosed with advanced PD were recruited in an open longitudinal 36-month study; 35 treated with levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG) and 30 were candidates for switching from oral PD treatment to LCIG. They utilized a test battery, consisting of self-assessments of symptoms and fine motor tests (tapping and spiral drawings), four times per day in their homes during week-long test periods. The repeated measurements were summarized into an overall test score (OTS) to represent the global condition of the patient during a test period. Clinical assessments included ratings on Unified PD Rating Scale (UPDRS) and 39-item PD Questionnaire (PDQ-39) scales. In LCIG-naïve patients, mean OTS compared to baseline was significantly improved from the first test period on LCIG treatment until month 24. In LCIG-non-naïve patients, there were no significant changes in mean OTS until month 36. The OTS correlated adequately with total UPDRS (rho = 0.59) and total PDQ-39 (0.59). Responsiveness measured as effect size was 0.696 and 0.536 for OTS and UPDRS respectively. The trends of the test scores were similar to the trends of clinical rating scores but dropout rate was high. Correlations between OTS and clinical rating scales were adequate indicating that the test battery contains important elements of the information of well-established scales. The responsiveness and reproducibility were better for OTS than for total UPDRS.

  • Data-Driven Model Predictive Control for the Contact-Rich Task of Food Cutting
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE-RAS International Conference on Humanoid Robots. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 2164-0572. - 9781538676301 ; , s. 244-250
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modelling of contact-rich tasks is challenging and cannot be entirely solved using classical control approaches due to the difficulty of constructing an analytic description of the contact dynamics. Additionally, in a manipulation task like food-cutting, purely learning-based methods such as Reinforcement Learning, require either a vast amount of data that is expensive to collect on a real robot, or a highly realistic simulation environment, which is currently not available. This paper presents a data-driven control approach that employs a recurrent neural network to model the dynamics for a Model Predictive Controller. We build upon earlier work limited to torque-controlled robots and redefine it for velocity controlled ones. We incorporate force/torque sensor measurements, reformulate and further extend the control problem formulation. We evaluate the performance on objects used for training, as well as on unknown objects, by means of the cutting rates achieved and demonstrate that the method can efficiently treat different cases with only one dynamic model. Finally we investigate the behavior of the system during force-critical instances of cutting and illustrate its adaptive behavior in difficult cases.

  • Enabling appropriate personnel skill-mix for progressive realization of equitable access to assistive technology
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Disability and rehabilitation. Assistive technology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1748-3115 .- 1748-3107. ; 13:5, s. 445-453
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Methods: This paper reviews the current capacity of personnel in enabling access to assistive technology (AT) as well as the systems and processes within which they work, and was reviewed, discussed, and refined during and following the Global Research, Innovation, and Education in Assistive Technology (GREAT) Summit. Findings: Key concepts addressed include a person-centred team approach; sustainability indicators to monitor, measure, and respond to needs for service design and delivery; education, research, and training for competent practice, using the six rehab-workforce challenges framework; and credentialing frameworks. We propose development of a competence framework and associated education and training programs, and development and implementation of a certification framework for AT personnel. Conclusions: There is a resolve to address the challenges faced by People globally to access assistive technology. Context specific needs assessment is required to understand the AT Personnel landscape, to shape and strengthen credentialing frameworks through competencies and certification, acknowledging both general and specific skill mix requirements.Implications for Rehabilitation Personnel in assistive technology (AT) provision should be trained using a person-centred team approach, which emphasizes appropriate skill-mix to address multiple needs within the community. Sustainability indicators should be used which allow personnel to monitor, measure and respond to needs for service design and delivery. A competence framework with associated education and training program, coupled with the development and implementation of a certification framework for AT personnel needs, will promote quality in AT personnel training globally.

  • Disturbing or Facilitating? On the Usability of Swedish eHealth Systems 2013
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: E-Health – For Continuity of Care. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 9781614994312 - 9781614994329 ; 205, s. 221-5
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As many evaluations show, healthcare organizations do not accomplish the intended effects of their eHealth systems due to inadequate usability. On behalf of the Swedish Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, the usability of current eHealth systems in Swedish healthcare have been analysed from the perspective of healthcare and social service professionals. The objective of the study was to report on current problems, potential solutions as well as to relate these to research in relevant areas. Using a participatory approach, seven workshops were held where researchers within health informatics collaborated with staff from different care providers, representatives of the national associations of health and social care professionals and the national eHealth system vendor organization. This paper presents a foundation for further development of eHealth systems, condensed into 10 issues that the Swedish health and social care professionals find imperative to improve. The study emphasizes that the development of eHealth systems is always a matter of organizational and process development and must be integrated into the care practice improvement process. Further, based on the findings, some identified challenges are discussed.
