  • Angle estimation using mmWave RSS measurements with enhanced multipath information
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: 2024 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • mmWave communication has come up as the unexplored spectrum for 5G services. With new standards for 5G NR positioning, more off-the-shelf platforms and algorithms are needed to perform indoor positioning. An object can be accurately positioned in a room either by using an angle and a delay estimate or two angle estimates or three delay estimates. We propose an algorithm to jointly estimate the angle of arrival (AoA) and angle of departure (AoD), based only on the received signal strength (RSS). We use mm-FLEX, an experimentation platform developed by IMDEA Networks Institute that can perform real-time signal processing for experimental validation of our proposed algorithm. Codebook-based beampatterns are used with a uniquely placed multi-antenna array setup to enhance the reception of multipath components and we obtain an AoA estimate per receiver thereby overcoming the line-of-sight (LoS) limitation of RSS-based localization systems. We further validate the results from measurements by emulating the setup with a simple ray-tracing approach.

  • Experimental Validation of Single Base Station 5G mm Wave Positioning: Initial Findings
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 25th International Conference on Information Fusion, FUSION 2022. - Piscataway : IEEE.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 5G cellular networks can utilize millimeter wave signals, and support large bandwidths and large antenna arrays, which provide more geometric-based signals and higher delay and angle resolutions. These merits bring new opportunities in positioning the user with limited infrastructure through the use of combined angle and delay information. However, there are many practical challenges to overcome, in order to have a functioning single base station 5G mmWave positioning system. In this paper, we describe a deployed single base station mmWave positioning system, and provide an example of the measurement data. Furthermore, we perform measurement validation on a limited measurement data set by performing base station localization. Additional evaluations performed on simulation model data provide guidelines on the required size of the data set and receiver antenna configuration, which will be implemented in upcoming measurements.

  • A Measurement Based Shadow Fading Model for Vehicle-to-Vehicle Network Simulations
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Antennas and Propagation. - : Hindawi Publishing Corporation. - 1687-5869 .- 1687-5877.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) propagation channel has significant implications on the design and performance of novel communication protocols for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). Extensive research efforts have been made to develop V2V channel models to be implemented in advanced VANET system simulators for performance evaluation. The impact of shadowing caused by other vehicles has, however, largely been neglected in most of the models, as well as in the system simulations. In this paper we present a shadow fading model targeting system simulations based on real measurements performed in urban and highway scenarios. The measurement data is separated into three categories, line-of-sight (LOS), obstructed line-of-sight (OLOS) by vehicles, and non-line-of-sight due to buildings, with the help of video information recorded during the measurements. It is observed that vehicles obstructing the LOS induce an additional average attenuation of about 10 dB in the received signal power. An approach to incorporate the LOS/OLOS model into existing VANET simulators is also provided. Finally, system level VANET simulation results are presented, showing the difference between the LOS/OLOS model and a channel model based on Nakagami-m fading.

  • Modeling the cluster decay in mm-wave channels
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 8th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, EuCAP 2014. - 9788890701849 ; , s. 803-807
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2014 European Association on Antennas and Propagation. The cluster power is an important parameter for cluster-based wireless channel models. This paper addresses modeling and estimation of the cluster power for wireless channels. A novel way of estimating the cluster decay and cluster fading, where the effects of the noise floor is taken into account, is presented. Due to the noise floor present in the measurement, only a limited number of clusters are available when estimating the cluster decay. It is shown that the estimated cluster decay and cluster fading can be improved if the effects of the noise floor and cluster fading are modeled and taken into account in the estimation step. If the noise floor is not taken into account in the estimation of the cluster decay, the resulting model can overestimate the RMS delay spread. Further, the paper includes estimates of the cluster decay and fading based on measured clusters for an indoor wireless mm-Wave channel in a conference room environment.

  • Low-complexity Channel Estimation and Localization with Random Beamspace Observations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ICC 2023 - IEEE International Conference on Communications. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE. - 9781538674628 ; 2023-May, s. 5985-5990
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the problem of low-complexity, high-dimensional channel estimation with beamspace observations, for the purpose of localization. Existing work on beamspace ESPRIT (estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance technique) approaches requires either a shift-invariance structure of the transformation matrix, or a full-column rank condition. We extend these beamspace ESPRIT methods to a case when neither of these conditions is satisfied, by exploiting the full-row rank of the transformation matrix. We first develop a tensor decomposition-based approach, and further design a matrix-based ESPRIT method to achieve auto-pairing of the channel parameters, with reduced complexity. Numerical simulations show that the proposed methods work in the challenging scenario, and the matrix-based ESPRIT approach achieves better performance than the tensor ESPRIT method. © 2023 IEEE

  • Measurements and Analysis of UWB Channels in Industrial Environments
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Communication in industrial environments is an important scenario for ultra wideband (UWB) systems. The characteristics of this environment differ considerably from office environments, where most of the channel measurements reported in the literature are performed. In this paper, we present the results and analysis of UWB channel measurements in an industrial environment. We investigate both peer-to-peer non-line-of-sight (P-P NLOS) and base station NLOS (BS NLOS) scenarios. The measurements are performed in the frequency range 3.1 to 8 GHz, at distances 2-16 m, using a vector network analyzer in conjunction with virtual antenna arrays. From these measurements, we extract channel model parameters such as power delay profiles, pathloss exponents, rms delay spread and the percentage of energy captured by RAKE receivers with a finite number of fingers. In addition, Saleh- Valenzuela parameters such as ray and cluster power decay constants and distribution of cluster interarrival times are extracted.

  • Measuring and using the RSSI of IEEE 802.11p
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 17th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems, ITS 2010, Busan, South Korea, 25-29 October 2010.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The scalability of intelligent transport systems (ITS) applications is difficult to test in a field operational test (FOT) due to the high number of ITS equipped vehicles required. Therefore, computer simulations for evaluating different wireless communication technologies for ITS different applications can serve as a complement. In this paper we present results from lab measurements conducted on the CVIS hardware platform equipped with the upcoming standard IEEE 802.11p. We have measured the packet error rate versus the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for different packet lengths. This lab measurement is the first step towards an outdoor measurement campaign which also considers interference. The outdoor measurements will then be fed into a computer simulator together with a realistic channel model for evaluating the scalability of VANETs in a highway scenario.

  • Digital Predistortion for Multiuser Hybrid MIMO at mmWaves
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - 1941-0476 .- 1053-587X. ; 68, s. 3603-3618
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Efficient mitigation of power amplifier (PA) nonlinear distortion in multi-user hybrid precoding based broadband mmWave systems is an open research problem. In this article, we carry out detailed signal and distortion modeling in broadband multi-user hybrid MIMO systems, with a bank of nonlinear PAs in each subarray, while also take the inevitable crosstalk between the antenna/PA branches into account. Building on the derived models, we adopt and describe an efficient closed-loop (CL) digital predistortion (DPD) solution that utilizes only a single-input DPD unit per transmit chain or subarray, despite crosstalk, providing thus substantial complexity-benefit compared to the state-of-the art multi-dimensional DPD solutions. We show that under spatially correlated multipath propagation, each single-input DPD unit can provide linearization towards every intended user, or more generally, towards all spatial directions where coherent propagation is taking place, and that the adopted CL DPD system is robust against crosstalk. Extensive numerical results building on practical measurement-based mmWave PA models are provided, demonstrating and verifying the excellent linearization performance of the overall DPD system in different evaluation scenarios.
