  • High-Dimensional Nonlinear Diffusion Stochastic Pprocesses. Modelling for Engineering Applications
  • 2001
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book is the first one devoted to high-dimensional (or large-scale) diffusion stochastic processes (DSPs) with nonlinear coefficients. These processes are closely associated with nonlinear Ito's stochastic ordinary differential equations (ISODEs) and with the space-discretized versions of nonlinear Ito's stochastic partial integro-differential equations. The latter models include Ito's stochastic partial differential equations (ISPDEs). The book presents the new analytical treatment which can serve as the basis of a combined, analytical-numerical approach to greater computational efficiency in engineering problems. A few examples discussed in the book include: the high-dimensional DSPs described with the ISODE systems for semiconductor circuits; the nonrandom model for stochastic resonance (and other noise-induced phenomena) in high-dimensional DSPs; the modification of the well-known stochastic-adaptive-interpolation method by means of bases of function spaces; ISPDEs as the tool to consistently model non-Markov phenomena; the ISPDE system for semiconductor devices; the corresponding classification of charge transport in macroscale, mesoscale and microscale semiconductor regions based on the wave-diffusion equation; the fully time-domain nonlinear-friction aware analytical model for the velocity covariance of particle of uniform fluid, simple or dispersed; the specific time-domain analytics for the long, non-exponential "tails" of the velocity in case of the hard-sphere fluid. These examples demonstrate not only the capabilities of the developed techniques but also emphasize the usefulness of the complex-system-related approaches to solve some problems which have not been solved with the traditional, statistical-physics methods yet. From this veiwpoint, the book can be regarded as a kind of complement to such books as "Introduction to the Physics of Complex Systems. The Mesoscopic Approach to Fluctuations, Nonlinearity and Self-Organization" by Serra, Andretta, Compiani and Zanarini, "Stochastic Dynamical Systems. Concepts, Numerical Methods, Data Analysis" and "Statistical Physics: An Advanced Approach with Applications" by Honerkamp which deal with physics of complex systems, some of the corresponding analysis methods and an innovative, stochastics-based vision of theoretical physics. To facilitate the reading by nonmathematicians, the introductory chapter outlines the basic notions and results of theory of Markov and diffusion stochastic processes without involving the measure-theoretical approach. This presentation is based on probability densities commonly used in engineering and applied sciences.

  • Properties of a bio-photovoltaic nano-device
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 112:48, s. 18717-18721
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Properties of an on-chip photovoltaic nanodevice are demonstrated. The dyes comprise green florescent proteins(GFP). Dependence of recently reported zero external potential bias (ZEPB) photocurrent (I) on temperature, power, and wavelength (λ) is shown. Correlation between UV-vis spectrum of the GFP and the ZEPB I(λ)of the device is reported. The temperature dependence suggests the ZEPB photocurrent to reflect a liquidcrystal type ordering where the current declines monotonically with increasing temperature. The influence ofan external bias on the photocurrent is demonstrated. The resulting light-induced current is analyzed in termsof resistive and quantum mechanical contributions.

  • The region ion sensitive field effect transistor, a novel bioelectronic nanosensor
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Biosensors & Bioelectronics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5663 .- 1873-4235. ; 22:12, s. 3105-3112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel type of bioelectronic region ion sensitive field effect transistor (RISFET) nanosensor was constructed and demonstrated on two different sensor chips that could measure glucose with good linearity in the range of 0-0.6 mM and 0-0.3 mM with a limit of detection of 0.1 and 0.04 mM, respectively. The sensor is based on the principle of focusing charged reaction products with an electrical field in a region between the sensing electrodes. For glucose measurements, negatively charged gluconate ions were gathered between the sensing electrodes. The signal current response was measured using a low-noise pico ammeter (pA). Two different sizes of the RISFET sensor chips were constructed using conventional electron beam lithography. The measurements are done in partial volumes mainly restricted by the working distance between the sensing electrodes (790 and 2500 nm, respectively) and the influence of electrical fields that are concentrating the ions. The sensitivity was 28 pA/mM (2500 nm) and 830 pA/mM (790 nm), respectively. That is an increase in field strength by five times between the sensing electrodes increased the sensitivity by 30 times. The volumes expressed in this way are in low or sub femtoliter range. Preliminary studies revealed that with suitable modification and control of parameters such as the electric control signals and the chip electrode dimensions this sensor could also be used as a nanobiosensor by applying single enzyme molecule trapping. Hypotheses are given for impedance factors of the RISFET conducting channel. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Low-Frequency Self-Powered Footstep Sensor Based on ZnO Nanowires on Paper Substrate
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nanoscale Research Letters. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1931-7573 .- 1556-276X. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, we design and fabricate a wireless system with the main operating device based on zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires. The main operating device is based on piezoelectric nanogenerator (NG) achieved using ZnO nanowires grown hydrothermally on paper substrate. The fabricated NG is capable of harvesting ambient mechanical energy from various kinds of human motion, e.g., footsteps. The harvested electric output has been used to serve as a self-powered pressure sensor. Without any storage device, the signal from a single footstep has successfully triggered a wireless sensor node circuit. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using ZnO nanowire piezoelectric NG as a low-frequency self-powered sensor, with potential applications in wireless sensor networks.

  • A Miniature Graphene-based Biosensor for Intracellular Glucose Measurements
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Electrochimica Acta. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0013-4686 .- 1873-3859. ; 174, s. 574-580
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on a small and simple graphene-based potentiometric sensor for the measurement of intracellular glucose concentration. A fine borosilicate glass capillary coated with graphene and subsequently immobilized with glucose oxidase (GOD) enzyme is inserted into the intracellular environment of a single human cell. The functional groups on the edge plane of graphene assist the attachment with the free amine terminals of GOD enzyme, resulting in a better immobilization. The sensor exhibits a glucose-dependent electrochemical potential against an Ag/AgCl reference microelectrode which is linear across the whole concentration range of interest (10 - 1000 μM). Glucose concentration in human fat cell measured by our graphene-based sensor is in good agreement with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.

  • High-Temperature Electronic Materials: Silicon Carbide and Diamond
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Springer Handbooks. - Boston, MA : Springer US. ; , s. 537-563
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The physical and chemical properties of wide-band-gap semiconductors make these materials an ideal wide bandgapsemiconductor choice for device fabrication for applications in many different areas, e.g. light emitters, high-temperature and high-power electronics, high-power microwave devices, micro-electromechanical system (MEM) technology, and substrates for semiconductor preparation. These semiconductors have micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) been recognized for several decades as being suitable for these applications, but until recently the low material quality has not allowed the fabrication of high-quality devices. In this material quality chapter, we review the wide-band-gap semiconductors, silicon carbide and diamond. Silicon carbide electronics is advancing from the research stage to commercial production. The commercial availability of single-crystal SiC substrates during the early 1990s gave rise to intense activity in the development of silicon carbide devices. The commercialization started with the release of blue light-emitting diode (LED). The recent release of high-power Schottky diodes was a further demonstration of the progress made towards defect-free SiC substrates. Diamond has superior physical and chemical properties. Silicon-carbide- and diamond-based diamondsilicon carbide (SiC) electronics are at different stages of development. The preparation of high-quality single-crystal substrates of wafer size has allowed recent significant progress in the fabrication of several types of devices, and the development has reached many important milestones. However, high-temperature studies are still scarce, and diamond-based electronics is still in its infancy.

  • Synthesis and Characterization of ZnO/Graphene Nanostructures for Electronics and Photocatalysis
  • 2021
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Recent rapid development of electronics and electro-optical devices demands affordable and reliable materials with enhanced performance. Forming nanocomposites of already well-known materials is one possible route towards novel functional materials with desirable synergistic enhanced properties. Incompatible chemical properties, mismatched crystal structures and weak bonding interactions between the substances, however, often limit the number of possible nanocomposites. Moreover, using an inexpensive, facile, large-area and flexible fabrication technique is crucial to employ the new composites in industrially viable applications. This thesis focuses on the synthesis and characterization of different zinc oxide/graphene (ZnO/GR) nanocomposites, well suited for optoelectronics and photocatalysis applications. Two different approaches of i) substrate-free random synthesis, and ii) template-assisted selective area synthesis were studied in detail. In the first approach, ZnO nanoparticles/rods were grown on GR. The obtained nanocomposites were investigated for better GR dispersity, electrical conductivity and optical properties. Besides, by adding silver iodide to the nanocomposite, an enhanced plasmonic solar-driven photocatalyst was synthesized and analyzed. In the second approach, arrays of single, vertically aligned ZnO nanorods were synthesized using a colloidal lithography-patterned sol-gel ZnO seed layer. Our demonstrated nanofabrication technique with simple, substrate independent, and large wafer-scale area compatibility improved the alignment and surface density of ZnO nanorods over large selective growth areas. Eventually, we found a novel method to further enhance the vertical alignment of the ZnO nanorods by introducing a GR buffer layer between the Si substrate and the ZnO seed layer, together with the mentioned patterning technique. The synthesized nanocomposites were analyzed using a large variety of experimental techniques including electron microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence spectroscopy for in-depth studies of their morphology, chemical and optical properties. Our findings show that the designed ZnO/GR nanocomposites with vertically aligned ZnO nanorods of high crystalline quality, synthesized with the developed low-cost nanofabrication technique, can lead to novel devices offering higher performance at a significantly lower fabrication cost.
