  • Construction of a web-based questionnaire for longitudinal investigation of work exposure, musculoskeletal pain and performance impairments in high-performance marine craft populations
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - : BMJ. - 2044-6055. ; 7:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: High-performance marine craft personnel (HPMCP) are regularly exposed to vibration and repeated shock (VRS) levels exceeding maximum limitations stated by international legislation. Whereas such exposure reportedly is detrimental to health and performance, the epidemiological data necessary to link these adverse effects causally to VRS are not available in the scientific literature, and no suitable tools for acquiring such data exist. This study therefore constructed a questionnaire for longitudinal investigations in HPMCP.METHODS: A consensus panel defined content domains, identified relevant items and outlined a questionnaire. The relevance and simplicity of the questionnaire's content were then systematically assessed by expert raters in three consecutive stages, each followed by revisions. An item-level content validity index (I-CVI) was computed as the proportion of experts rating an item as relevant and simple, and a scale-level content validity index (S-CVI/Ave) as the average I-CVI across items. The thresholds for acceptable content validity were 0.78 and 0.90, respectively. Finally, a dynamic web version of the questionnaire was constructed and pilot tested over a 1-month period during a marine exercise in a study population sample of eight subjects, while accelerometers simultaneously quantified VRS exposure.RESULTS: Content domains were defined as work exposure, musculoskeletal pain and human performance, and items were selected to reflect these constructs. Ratings from nine experts yielded S-CVI/Ave of 0.97 and 1.00 for relevance and simplicity, respectively, and the pilot test suggested that responses were sensitive to change in acceleration and that the questionnaire, following some adjustments, was feasible for its intended purpose.CONCLUSIONS: A dynamic web-based questionnaire for longitudinal survey of key variables in HPMCP was constructed. Expert ratings supported that the questionnaire content is relevant, simple and sufficiently comprehensive, and the pilot test suggested that the questionnaire is feasible for longitudinal measurements in the study population.

  • New printing technology and pricing
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 38:3, s. 253-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This case study analyzes five Swedish printing houses' pricing with respect to their investments in new printing technology. The new printing technology made it possible for the printing houses to market new products and services to meet the demand for shorter delivery times and full service solutions. Although this demand was apparent, the printing houses' opportunities to capitalize on their investments depended on the characteristics of the market segment that they served. Findings indicate that the new printing technology made it possible to change prices when the new services reduced delivery time and costs, and when there were substantial differences between the new services and available substitutes. Thus, customers accepted new pricing when the utilization of the new technology resulted in financial gains and time reductions.

  • Galling resistance evaluation of tool steels by two different laboratory test methods for sheet metal forming
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Lubrication Science. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0954-0075 .- 1557-6833. ; 24:6, s. 263-272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adhesive accumulation of work material on the tool surface is today a major problem in many sheet metal-forming applications. Different laboratory test methods are used to investigate galling with respect to different tool materials, lubricants and process conditions. In the present study, the galling resistance of a modern nitrogen-alloyed powder metallurgy tool steel and an conventional ingot cast D2 type tool steel was evaluated under lubricated sliding against ferritic stainless steel sheets using a commercial pin-on-disc (POD) and an in-house made slider-on-flat-surface (SOFS) tribotester. The investigated tool steels ranked similarly in terms of galling resistanc in both test methods. However, sliding distances to galling were longer for the SOFS equipment due to continuous sliding on new lubricated sheet surface. Best performance was demonstrated by the powder metallurgy tool steel treated to 65 HRC. Differences in friction behaviour and galling initiation were analysed on the basis of the two different working conditions, i.e. open (SOFS) and closed (POD) tribosystems. • Exposure aboard high-performance Marine craft increases musculoskeletal pain and lowers contemporary work capacity of the occupants
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Engineering for the Maritime Environment (Part M). - : SAGE Publications. - 1475-0902 .- 2041-3084. ; 235:3, s. 750-762
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-Performance Marine Craft (HPMC) occupants are currently being investigated for various psychophysical impairments degrading work performance postulating that these deteriorations are related to their occupational exposures. However, scientific evidence for this is lacking and the association of exposure conditions aboard HPMC with adverse health and performance effects is unknown. Therefore, the study estimates the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain (MSP) among HPMC occupants and the association of their work exposure with MSP and performance degradation. It also presents a criterion for evaluating the self-reported exposure severity aboard three different types of mono-hull HPMC; displacement, semi-displacement and planing, on a par with the available standard criteria for objectively measurable exposures. Furthermore, another criterion is proposed to assess the performance-degradation of HPMC occupants based on self-reported fatigue symptoms and MSP. Swedish Coast Guard HPMC occupants were surveyed for MSP, fatigue symptoms as well as for work-related and individual risk indicators using a validated web-based questionnaire. Prevalence of MSP and performance-degradation during the past 12 months were assessed and presented as a percentage of the sample. Associations of exposure conditions aboard HPMC with MSP and performance-capacity were systematically evaluated using multiple logistic regression models and expressed as odds ratio (OR). Prevalence of MSP was 72% among which lower back pain was the most prevalent (46%) followed by neck pain (29%) and shoulder pain (23%) while 29% with degraded performance. Exposure to severe conditions aboard semi-displacement craft was associated with lower back (OR = 2.3) and shoulder (OR = 2.6) pain while severe conditions aboard planing craft with neck pain (OR = 2.3) and performance-degradation (OR = 2.6). MSP is common among Swedish coast guards. Severe exposure conditions aboard HPMC are significantly associated with both MSP and performance-degradation. The spine and shoulders are the most susceptible to work-related MSP among HPMC occupants which should be targeted in work-related preventive and corrective measures.

  • A study of relationships between content in documents from the health service operational plan and documents from the planning of new healthcare environments
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Health Environments Research & Design Journal. - : SAGE Publications. - 1937-5867 .- 2167-5112. ; 12:3, s. 107-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: The aim was to investigate the content and quality of the governing documents created in the planning and design phase of new healthcare environments and in the related healthcare strategic and operational plans. Background: Quality deficits in buildings can often be traced back to the initial stages in the planning and design phase. Although, large investments have been made to improve the process of planning new healthcare environments and linking the requirements to health service strategies, healthcare organizations rarely relate their strategy goals to the built environment. Methods: A retrospective review of documents created in the planning and design stages of new healthcare environments and the operational plans of the target organizations was conducted. Results: The organizational operational plans did not contain any statements or information about the built environment or how a building could or should support the organization's goals. Important information was frequently absent from the documents governing the planning and design of buildings. The documents lacked information about what and how to follow-up and what to measure once a construction project had been completed. There were no references to evidence. Conclusions: Poor documentation might undermine the quality of the planning and design phase and ultimately the opportunity to create environments that support health outcomes. Therefore, more emphasis must be placed on the importance of documentation but above all to strengthen and clarify the relationship between the healthcare organization strategy to achieve an effective and efficient care process and the intention made in the planning and design process.

  • Behaviour of surface defects in wire rod rolling
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Steel Research International. - Düsseldorf : Wiley. - 1611-3683 .- 1869-344X. ; 77:6, s. 439-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Defects are often present in rolled products, such as wire rod. The market demand for wire rod without any defects has increased. In the final wire rod products, defects originating from steel making, casting, pre-rolling of billets and during wire rod rolling can appear. In this work, artificial V-shaped longitudinal surface cracks have been analysed experimentally and by means of FEM. The results indicate that the experiments and FEM calculations show the same tendency except in two cases, where instability due to fairly "round" false round bars disturbed the experiment. FE studies in combination with practical experiments are necessary in order to understand the behaviour of the material flows in the groove and to explain whether the crack will open up as a V-shape or if it will be closed as an I-shape.

  • Radiated Electromagnetic Emission from Photovoltaic Systems—Measurement Results: Inverters and Modules
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI. - 1996-1073. ; 17:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Radiated electromagnetic emission of photovoltaic systems, for example, adversely impacting radiocommunication, can pose a major barrier against further increase in photovoltaic penetration. This is particularly the case near sensitive infrastructure and activities such as hospitals, airports, search and rescue, and military. To understand the impact of each component and installation detail, we performed systematic radiated electromagnetic emission measurements on comparable commercial photovoltaic systems in the frequency range 150 kHz to 30 MHz. Our measurements indicate that string inverters are unlikely to interfere with radiocommunication when installed according to recommended standards, rules, guidelines, and regulations. It was shown that module-level power optimizers are the main cause of high levels of radiated emissions. The frameless bifacial module showed higher levels of radiated emissions than the monofacial module with frame. Changes in cable management and earthing have less impact on radiated emissions than the choice of solar inverter concept and module type.

  • Repeated low impacts in alpine ski helmets
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Sports Technology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1934-6182 .- 1934-6190. ; 6:1, s. 43-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alpine ski race helmets are subjected to multiple impacts during a race caused by the skiers hitting the gates on their way down the course. This study investigated the difference between expanded polystyrene (EPS) and expanded polypropylene (EPP) cores in alpine ski race helmets when subjected to repetitive violence, caused by alpine slalom gates. A special test rig was developed where a rotating slalom pole impacted the helmets with a velocity of 13.3 m·s− 1. All helmets (six EPS and six EPP) were attached to a headform, monitored with a triaxial accelerometer at the center of mass. Each helmet sustained 1000 impacts and acceleration data were collected around every 200 impacts. No significant differences were observed between the first hit and after 1000 hits for either the EPS or the EPP helmets. However, the total group mean acceleration and mean peak acceleration were 15% and 16% higher, respectively, for the EPS series compared with the EPP series. Also, all EPS helmets showed cracked cores after 1000 impacts compared with 1 cracked EPP core. Findings suggest that EPP cores might be more suitable for absorbing multiple low impacts caused by alpine gates and that repeated violence is a relevant parameter to consider when constructing alpine ski race helmets.

  • Health risk appraisals in Swedish occupational health services
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Work. - : IOS Press. - 1051-9815 .- 1875-9270. ; 55:4, s. 849-859
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Health risk appraisals (HRAs) in occupational health services (OHS) in Sweden are very commonly used for health promotion issues, but not much research has explored the extent and nature of individual feedback that is provided. Objectives: This study aimed to describe and explore HRAs in OHS regarding the content of the feedback in relation to the individual status and overall employee satisfaction. Methods: Feedback (evaluation and advice) and employee satisfaction with HRA were studied in employees that participated in health risk appraisals with a specific feedback session (HRA-F) (n = 272) and employees that participated in a single session (HRA-S) (n = 104). Associations between feedback and individual status concerning life style were assessed with Cohen's kappa (k).Results: The employees received mainly information and advice for improvement on health and lifestyle issues (89-100%), while advice for improvement of working conditions was less common (15-59%). The feedback provided on life style was not based on individual status (k < 0.4), except for smoking and risky alcohol consumption (k > 0.55). A great majority of employees reported good overall satisfaction with their HRAs.Conclusions: The evaluation and feedback given to employees after HRAs should be based more on HRA-results and advice could be focused more on work-related factors.
