  • Organizational support for innovation in biosciences: Comparing high and low performers in Sweden and Croatia
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: European Sociological Association, ESA 9th conference, 2-5 September, 2009, Lisbon.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • There is a need to better understand the organizational factors influencing innovative performance. This cross-cultural study examined organizational support factors in biotech R&D groups differing in innovative performance. The objective was to twofold; first to explore how organizing influences innovativeness in R&D, and, second to examine if R&D organizing is related to nations having a low and high innovation degree, respectively. Results supported that organizing R&D as well as national innovation performance are related. Crucial organizational issues found were how much organizations encouraged innovations, the degree of perceived autonomy and to what extent organizations could supply knowledge. Some of the implications of these results are introduced.

  • Challenges to competitive manufacturing in high-cost environments: checklist and insights from Swedish manufacturing firms
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Operations Management Research. - : Springer Nature. - 1936-9735 .- 1936-9743.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on competitive manufacturing (CM) in high-cost environments has earlier indicated that firms struggle to remain competitive and that manufacturing operations often have been offshored to low-cost environments. The purpose of this research is to explore and create a compounded view of challenges related to both internal and external environments of firms when operating in high-cost environments. This issue has been investigated through a qualitative case study involving five manufacturing firms in Sweden. This research has empirically derived the challenges associated with sustaining CM in high-cost environments and developed a prescriptive checklist. Seven main categories of challenges have been identified, ranging from a micro level related to product characteristics and employee involvement, to a macro level related to supply chain collaborations and industry systems. This research contributes to the existing literature on CM in high-cost locations by explaining and detailing what constitutes challenges in this kind of environment.

  • Control systems for improvement of cone crusher yield and operation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Comminution '14.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Gyratory and cone crushers are regaining interest and are becoming more frequently used in order to create more energy efficient comminution circuits. A typical example is found in coarse comminution circuits were HPGRs are used as a first milling stage. In this case the preparation of a suitable feed with a well-defined width of the particle size distribution and a controlled top size are of high importance. In turn, this emphasizes the importance of a stable and controlled operation of the preceding crushing stages. Control systems for cone and gyratory crushers were first introduced during the early 60ths. The common opinion is that if these systems are able to compensate for the wear of the crushing liners the production yield can be increased with 20-25%. Over the years these types of systems have been widely used but the theory behind the principles have not been thoroughly scientifically scrutinized and presented. Of special interest is the capability to protect the crushers from long term overloading commonly defined as fatigue. With developments in electronics and plant control the crusher control systems have become more refined over the years. Though, there are sometimes conflicting interests in the control strategies between process requirements and crusher protection. In the paper an overview of the challenges, opportunities and existing control systems for cone and gyratory crushers is presented. A requirement specification for a system that is possible to fully integrate into modern plant control systems is outlined.

  • Ingår i: Human Systems Engineering and Design. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030020521 - 9783030020538 ; 876, s. 477-483
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adverse work-related physical exposures such as repetitive movements and awkward postures have negative health effects and lead to large financial costs. To address these problems, a multi-disciplinary consortium was formed with the aim of developing an ambulatory system for recording and analyzing risks for musculoskeletal disorders utilizing textile integrated sensors as part of the regular workwear. This paper presents the consortium, the Smart Workwear System, and a case study illustrating its potential to decrease adverse biomechanical exposure by promoting improved work technique.

  • The importance of the retailer for an OEM developing innovative products
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Conradi Research Review. - : Vaasa University of Applied Sciences. - 1459-0980. ; 6:2, s. 63-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The supply chain strategy research has generated many frameworks for matching the supply chain with the nature of demand, market, consumers, or products. Recently many companies have implemented innovative new product development processes in order to increase revenue. However, research on the importance of the retailers for an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) adopting a leagile supply chain strategy for innovative products, is scarce. Using the case study method, this research investigates the need of collaboration between an OEM and its retailers. This research aims to richen the knowledge about demand supply chain management (DSCM), and the coordination of demand and supply processes between companies in the demand-supply chain. This research shows that there are several measures that may be used to monitor performance, and that collaboration is important for the case company.

  • Coordinating new product development and supply chain management
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Value Chain Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1741-5357 .- 1741-5365. ; 4:1/2, s. 170-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Effective implementation of the new product development (NPD) process not only enables management to coordinate the efficient flow of new products, but will also assist to support ramp-up of various supply chain activities and other related activities supporting the commercialisation of the product. Thus, companies need to address all these issues in parallel to be successful and this requires some kind of integrative product development approach. The purpose of this research is to increase the understanding of how NPD is connected to supply chain management (SCM) by investigating how the NPD process is structured and executed in two international manufacturing companies seeking to realise an innovative, predictable and efficient product development. Several essential linkages between NPD and SCM have been derived from case study findings concerning important issues for successful product development.

  • Coordinating new product development with supply chain management
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Industrial management & data systems. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0263-5577 .- 1758-5783. ; 111:2, s. 264-281
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to form an understanding of how new product development (NPD) relates to supply chain management (SCM), why the two fields should be coordinated, and how this may be done.Design/methodology/approach – This research uses a literature review and case study research. The case study considers a Swedish company that operates on a global basis in the furniture industry. Empirical data have been collected mainly from in-depth interviews with key persons representing senior and middle management in the case company.Findings – This paper stresses the need to produce innovative, value-adding products, as well as the necessity to quickly deliver them to the market. Companies that face mature business environments may encounter problems due to a high emphasis on either the value-creation processes, or on the value delivery processes. Therefore, NPD activities need to be coordinated with SCM activities on a strategic level, lest competitiveness will be lost.Research limitations/implications – The research is limited to one case company; replication studies would enhance understanding of the studied phenomenon. There is a wide need for research exploring how various parts of demand and supply chains should be managed in order to fully utilize the advantages of the consumer-oriented enterprise.Practical implications – This paper provides insights for researchers and practitioners on how to coordinate and balance NPD (demand side) with SCM (supply side) activities. It highlights that companies should organize themselves around understanding how consumer value is created and how these processes may be coordinated to provide that value. The two processes must be given equal attention and importance to avoid sub-optimization.Originality/value – The need for coordinating NPD and SCM activities has been emphasized in the literature but still remains relatively unexplored. This paper contributes by investigating this issue further.

  • Monitoring and validation of life time prediction of cone crusher with respect to loading and feeding conditions
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Comminution 16. - 9781510826670 ; 904 (1 Vol)
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interest and need for compressive crushing in gyratory, cone and HPGR crushers are increasing since ores become more competent and more difficult to break. Compressive crushing is energy efficient as a consequence of the crushing principle and the imposed stress-state. The stress variations can be described by stress amplitudes and it is a known fact that many different materials, components and machines suffer from cyclic loading which shortens the service lifetime. This phenomena is explained by density variations of the particle beds in the equipment which in turn originates from particle segregation and feeding alignment. The phenomena is often called fatigue and the consequence is premature breakdowns and a relatively shorter lifetime than expected. In this paper, a previously developed theory for lifetime assessment of cone crushers will be used as a foundation for evaluation of full-scale operating cone crushers in minerals processing plants. Lifetime is calculated as a consequence of the load spectrum. The data shows that improper feeding conditions will substantially decrease the lifetime of the crusher equipment leading to excessive operating costs. An adequate control system should be able to recognise the hazardous lifetime decreasing overloads and to warn the operator. There are sometimes conflicting interests in the control strategies between production yield (process requirements) and crusher protection.

  • Clinical evaluation of a myofeedback-based teletreatment service applied in the workplace: a randomized controlled trial
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare. - : SAGE Publications. - 1357-633X .- 1758-1109. ; 16:6, s. 329-335
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We evaluated the clinical effects of a myofeedback-based teletreatment service in terms of pain, pain-related disability and work ability. We also investigated the time investment/ savings of this treatment with respect to conventional care. Sixtyfive women with neck and shoulder pain at work participated in the study. Thirty-three took part in the teletreatment and 32 participated in a control group which continued with conventional care. Questionnaires were completed before the start of the intervention (baseline) and at initial follow-up (T0) and 3 months (T3) after the intervention ended. A general linear model analysis for repeated measurements showed an improvement in terms of pain and work ability for both groups taken together, with no differences between them. Non-parametric tests showed an intervention effect in painrelated disability for both groups together and no differences between them when tested at baseline, T0 and T3. The time saved in relation to conventional care was mainly from reduced travel time, which was 41 min per teleconsultation. The teletreatment service allowed employees to take part in muscle relaxation training while performing their regular work. The clinical evaluation showed that the treatment was on par with conventional care, but without the effort and time loss associated with regular visits to the clinic. We conclude that the myofeedback-based teletreatment service has potential for addressing neck and shoulder symptoms at the workplace.
