  • Dual-wavelength digital holography : single-shot shape evaluation using speckle displacements and regularization
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Applied Optics. - : Optical Society of America. - 1559-128X .- 2155-3165 .- 0003-6935 .- 1539-4522. ; 53:1, s. 123-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the possibility of evaluating the shape of a free-form object in comparison with its shape prescribed by a CAD model. Measurements are made based on a single-shot recording using dual-wavelength holography with a synthetic wavelength of 1.4 mm. Each hologram is numerically propagated to different focus planes and correlated. The result is a vector field of speckle displacements that is linearly dependent on the local distance between the measured surface and the focus plane. From these speckle displacements, a gradient field of the measured surface is extracted through a proportional relationship. The gradient field obtained from the measurement is then aligned to the shape of the CAD model using the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm and regularization. Deviations between the measured shape and the CAD model are found from the phase difference field, giving a high precision shape evaluation. The phase differences and the CAD model are also used to find a representation of the measured shape. The standard deviation of the measured shape relative the CAD model varies between 7 and 19 μm, depending on the slope.

  • Full-field 3D deformation measurement : Comparison between speckle phase and displacement evaluation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Applied Optics. - : Optical Society of America. - 1559-128X .- 2155-3165 .- 0003-6935 .- 1539-4522. ; 55:27, s. 7735-7743
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this paper is to describe a full-field deformation measurement method based on 3D speckle displacements. The deformation is evaluated from the slope of the speckle displacement function that connects the different reconstruction planes. For our experiment, a symmetrical arrangement with four illuminations parallel to the planes (x,z) and (y,z) was used. Four sets of speckle patterns were sequentially recorded by illuminating an object from the four directions, respectively. A single camera is used to record the holograms before and after deformations. Digital speckle photography is then used to calculate relative speckle displacements in each direction between two numerically propagated planes. The 3D speckle displacements vector is calculated as a combination of the speckle displacements from the holograms recorded in each illumination direction. Using the speckle displacements, problems associated with rigid body movements and phase wrapping are avoided. In our experiment, the procedure is shown to give the theoretical accuracy of 0.17 pixels yielding the accuracy of 2 × 10-3 in the measurement of deformation gradients

  • New printing technology and pricing
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 38:3, s. 253-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This case study analyzes five Swedish printing houses' pricing with respect to their investments in new printing technology. The new printing technology made it possible for the printing houses to market new products and services to meet the demand for shorter delivery times and full service solutions. Although this demand was apparent, the printing houses' opportunities to capitalize on their investments depended on the characteristics of the market segment that they served. Findings indicate that the new printing technology made it possible to change prices when the new services reduced delivery time and costs, and when there were substantial differences between the new services and available substitutes. Thus, customers accepted new pricing when the utilization of the new technology resulted in financial gains and time reductions.

  • Oligoamine ionic liquids supported on mesoporous microspheres for CO2 separation with good sorption kinetics and low cost
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of CO2 Utilization. - : Elsevier. - 2212-9820 .- 2212-9839. ; 39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ionic liquids display good CO2 absorption capacity but poor absorption kinetics and high costs. In the present work, we show that these problems can be solved by impregnating the new low cost ionic liquid pentaethylenehexammonium chloride [PEHA][Cl] and the corresponding amine precursor on a low cost mesoporous microsphere support. Nitrogen adsorption/ desorption, high-resolution SEM and thermogravimetric analysis were employed to analyze the structural and thermal properties of the prepared sorbents. The CO2 adsorption and desorption performance was studied by column experiments and mathematical models were fitted to the data. The results showed that sorbents displayed excellent sorption kinetics and capacity, comparable to the best reports in the literature. In addition, the sorbents could be regenerated and displayed high thermal stability. Finally, the costs of the sorbents developed in the present work is much lower than previously reported sorbents. Therefore this novel supported IL system could be promising for industrial CO2 removal and recovery applications.

  • Topology optimization of heat sinks in a square differentially heated cavity
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Heat and Fluid Flow. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0142-727X .- 1879-2278. ; 74, s. 36-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Innovative designs of heat sinks are generated in the present paper through numerical optimization, by applying a material distribution topology optimization approach. The potential of the method is demonstrated in a two-dimensional differentially heated cavity, in which the heat transfer is increased by means of introducing a solid structure that acts as a heat sink. We simulate the heat transfer in the whole system by performing direct numerical simulations of the conjugated problem, i.e. temperature diffusion and convection in the entire domain and momentum conservation in the fluid surrounding the solid. The flow is driven by the buoyancy force, under the Boussinesq approximation, and we describe the presence of solid material as the action of a Brinkman friction force in the Navier–Stokes equations. To obtain a design with a given length scale, we apply regularization techniques by filtering the material distribution. Two different types of filters are applied and compared for obtaining the most realistic solution. Given the large scale of the problem, the optimization is solved with a gradient based method that relies on adjoint sensitivity analysis. The results show the applicability of the method by presenting innovative geometries that are increasing the heat flux. Moreover, the effect of various factors is studied: We investigate the impact of boundary conditions, initial designs, and Rayleigh number. Complex tree-like structures are favored when a horizontal temperature gradient is imposed on the boundary and when we limit the amount of solid volume in the cavity. The choice of the initial design affects the final topology of the generated solid structures, but not their performance for the studied cases. Additionally, when the Rayleigh number increases, the topology of the heat exchanger is able to substantially enhance the convection contribution to the heat transfer.

  • A lab-on-a-chip for hypoxic patch clamp measurements combined with optical tweezers and spectroscopy : first investigations of single biological cells
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Biomedical engineering online. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1475-925X. ; 14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The response and the reaction of the brain system to hypoxia is a vital research subject that requires special instrumentation. With this research subject in focus, a new multifunctional lab-on-a-chip (LOC) system with control over the oxygen content for studies on biological cells was developed. The chip was designed to incorporate the patch clamp technique, optical tweezers and absorption spectroscopy. The performance of the LOC was tested by a series of experiments. The oxygen content within the channels of the LOC was monitored by an oxygen sensor and verified by simultaneously studying the oxygenation state of chicken red blood cells (RBCs) with absorption spectra. The chicken RBCs were manipulated optically and steered in three dimensions towards a patch-clamp micropipette in a closed microfluidic channel. The oxygen level within the channels could be changed from a normoxic value of 18% O 2 to an anoxic value of 0.0-0.5% O 2. A time series of 3 experiments were performed, showing that the spectral transfer from the oxygenated to the deoxygenated state occurred after about 227 ± 1 s and a fully developed deoxygenated spectrum was observed after 298 ± 1 s, a mean value of 3 experiments. The tightness of the chamber to oxygen diffusion was verified by stopping the flow into the channel system while continuously recording absorption spectra showing an unchanged deoxygenated state during 5400 ± 2 s. A transfer of the oxygenated absorption spectra was achieved after 426 ± 1 s when exposing the cell to normoxic buffer. This showed the long time viability of the investigated cells. Successful patching and sealing were established on a trapped RBC and the whole-cell access (Ra) and membrane (Rm) resistances were measured to be 5.033 ± 0.412 M Ω and 889.7 ± 1.74 M Ω respectively.

  • Biomimetic Photonic Multiform Composite for High-Performance Radiative Cooling
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Advanced Optical Materials. - : Wiley. - 2162-7568 .- 2195-1071. ; 9:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanostructures on bodies of biological inhabitants in severe environments can exhibit excellent thermoregulation, which provide inspirations for artificial radiative cooling materials. However, achieving both large-scale manufacturing and flexible form-compatibility to various applications needs remains as a formidable challenge. Here a biomimetic strategy is adopted to design a thermal photonic composite inspired by the previously unexplored golden cicada's evolutionarily optimized thermoregulatory ability. A microimprint combined with phase separation method is developed for fabricating a biomimetic photonic material made of porous polymer–ceramic composite profiled in microhumps. The composite demonstrates high solar reflectance (97.6%) and infrared emissivity (95.5%) in atmospheric window, which results in a cooling power of 78 W m−2 and a maximum subambient temperature drop of 6.6 °C at noon. Moreover, the technique facilitates multiform manufacturing of the composites beyond films, as demonstrated by additive printing into general 3D structures. This work offers biomimetic approach for developing high-performance thermal regulation materials and devices.

  • Sim-to-real transfer of active suspension control using deep reinforcement learning
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Robotics and Autonomous Systems. - : Elsevier. - 0921-8890 .- 1872-793X. ; 179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We explore sim-to-real transfer of deep reinforcement learning controllers for a heavy vehicle with active suspensions designed for traversing rough terrain. While related research primarily focuses on lightweight robots with electric motors and fast actuation, this study uses a forestry vehicle with a complex hydraulic driveline and slow actuation. We simulate the vehicle using multibody dynamics and apply system identification to find an appropriate set of simulation parameters. We then train policies in simulation using various techniques to mitigate the sim-to-real gap, including domain randomization, action delays, and a reward penalty to encourage smooth control. In reality, the policies trained with action delays and a penalty for erratic actions perform nearly at the same level as in simulation. In experiments on level ground, the motion trajectories closely overlap when turning to either side, as well as in a route tracking scenario. When faced with a ramp that requires active use of the suspensions, the simulated and real motions are in close alignment. This shows that the actuator model together with system identification yields a sufficiently accurate model of the actuators. We observe that policies trained without the additional action penalty exhibit fast switching or bang–bang control. These present smooth motions and high performance in simulation but transfer poorly to reality. We find that policies make marginal use of the local height map for perception, showing no indications of predictive planning. However, the strong transfer capabilities entail that further development concerning perception and performance can be largely confined to simulation.

  • When a new industry meets traditional and declining ones: An integrative approach towards dialectics and social movement theory in a model of regional industry emergence processes
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 26:3, s. 290-308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper takes an integrative approach towards dialectics and social movement theories in a model of regional industry emergence processes. Based on an inductive qualitative investigation we describe how a new industry emerges in a declining and peripheral region dominated by struggling and traditional local industry. The emanating model of regional industry emergence is based on four main processes; framing processes, movement mobilisation processes, inter-industry relational processes and dialectical processes, which together shape the emerging regional industry. This exemplifies how new regional industry mobilisation efforts provide an ‘anti-thesis' to traditional industry, and how established industry actors respond with contestation to protect their business concepts. Furthermore we illustrate how new industry actors reframe their concepts to complement dominating traditional industry and to overcome tensions and conflicts. Following dialectic interaction between new and traditional industry we noticed signs of acceptance and synthesis between the newly formed and old industry actors; ultimately resulting in a revitalisation of the region's traditional industry. As such, the paper makes a point of accounting for agency and productive conflict when understanding regional industry renewal and emergence.

  • Unified Modeling and Analysis of Vibration Energy Harvesters under Inertial Loads and Prescribed Displacements
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Sciences (Switzerland). - : MDPI AG. - 2076-3417 .- 1454-5101. ; 12:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we extend the optimization analysis found in the current literature for single-degree-of-freedom vibrational energy harvesters. We numerically derive and analyze the optimization conditions based on unified expressions for piezoelectric and electromagnetic energy harvesters. Our contribution lies in the detailed analysis and comparison of both resonant and anti-resonant states while fully including the effect of intrinsic resistance. We include both the case of excitation by inertial load and prescribed displacement, as the latter has not been elaborated on in the previous literature and provides new insights. We perform a general analysis but also consider typical values of applied piezoelectric and electromagnetic energy harvesters. Our results improve upon previous similar comparative studies by providing new and useful insights regarding optimal load, load power and power input to output efficiency. Our analysis shows an exponential increase in the critical mechanical quality factor due to the resistive loss coefficient. We find that the ratio of mechanical quality factor to resistive loss coefficient, at resonance, increases drastically close to the theoretical maximum for load power. Under the same optimization conditions, an equivalent conclusion can be drawn regarding efficiency. We find that the efficiency at anti-resonance behaves differently and is equal to or larger than the efficiency at resonance. We also show that the optimal load coefficient at resonance has a significant dependence on the mechanical quality factor only when the resistive loss coefficient is large. Our comparison of excitation types supports the previous literature, in a simple and intuitive way, regarding optimal load by impedance matching and power output efficiency. Our modeling and exploration of new parameter spaces provide an improved tool to aid the development of new harvester prototypes.
