  • Reconfigurable optical interconnection system supporting concurrent application-specific parallel computing

    • Application specific architectures are highly desirable in embedded parallel computing systems at the same time as designers strive for using one embedded parallel computing platform for several applications. If this can be achieved, the cost can be decreased in comparison to using several different embedded parallel computing systems. This paper presents a novel approach of running several high-performance applications concurrently on one single parallel computing system. By using a reconfigurable backplane interconnection system, the applications can be run efficiently with high network flexibility since the interconnect network can be adapted to fit the application that is being processed for the moment. More precisely, this paper investigates how the space time adaptive processing (STAP) radar algorithm and the stripmap synthetic aperture radar (SAR) algorithm can be mapped on a multi-cluster processing system with a reconfigurable optical interconnection system realized by a micro-optical-electrical mechanical system (MOEMS) crossbars. The paper describes the reconfigurable platform, the two algorithms and how they individually can be mapped on the targeted multiprocessor system. It is also described how these two applications can be mapped simultaneously on the optical reconfigurable platform. Implications and requirements on communication bandwidth and processor performance in different critical points of the two applications are presented. The results of the analysis show that an implementation is feasible with today's MOEMS technology, and that the two applications can be successfully run in a time-sharing scheme, both at the processing side and at the access for interconnection bandwidth.

    • The performance requirements on data and telecommunication switches and routers are continuously increasing and it is evident that new ideas and architectures must come to light to satisfy these new demands. In this paper, a runtime reconfigurable modular design approach is presented, using state-of-the-art microoptical-electrical mechanical system (MOEMS) components. The paper introduces a novel field of reconfigurability, where reconfiguration is made on the system level instead of, e.g. fine-granularity reconfigurable logic. Different reconfigurable system solutions with support to adapt for asymmetric traffic patterns are proposed and compared to see how design choices affect flexibility, performance etc. The proposed solutions are characterized by their multistage networks with reconfigurable shuffle patterns.

    • Embedded Intelligent Systems (EIS) is the joint research field of the four collaborating laboratories at the School of Information Science, Computer and Electrical Engineering (IDE) at Halmstad University. The research of the four labs is integrated into a strong concerted research environment within embedded systems (EIS) - with a perspective reaching from the enabling technology via new system solutions and intelligent applications to end user aspects and business models. It is an expanding research area with many applications, not least ones that exist in everyday life.EIS is an important research environment contributing to the regional Triple Helix innovation system Healthcare Technology which the region has pointed out as a prioritised development sector. With its strong connections to both established and new, expanding firms hived off from the university, the research environment is active in the Healthcare Technology Alliance, a network of around sixty companies, counties and health care providers in south-western Sweden with the aim of developing the region into a leading arena for the development of health technology products and services. Several projects together with these participants concern both research and technology transfer.An integrated gender and gender equality perspective in innovations within the health technology area is necessary in order to be able to meet the needs of an ageing population with quality innovations. The relevancy of a gender perspective is clear in relation to the fact that about 70% of all those older than 75 years are women. Older women are on average cared for in hospital twice as long as men, partly due to differing disease panoramas, but also because men are more often cared for in the home by a woman while the women who live longer more often live alone. With the expansion of home-help and home nursing new needs follow and it is likely that a gender perspective will become necessary for the development of products and services that can make daily life easier for the elderly. The gender perspective also has relevance from the point of view of care staff. New technology is developed for application within the health and care sector where the larger professional groups consist mainly of women. The technology, most often designed by men, is used by women. With this in mind it is clear that an important aspect of good innovations is that the end users are involved in the innovation process.Based on an awareness of the need for a more articulated gender perspective within the research environment, in order to meet the needs expressed above, an application for a gender inclusive R&D project was handed in to the VINNOVA programme Applied Gender Research in Strong Research and Innovation Environments. The G-EIS project (Gender Perspective on Embedded Intelligent Systems - Application in Healthcare Technology) was approved and started in 2009. The project involves researchers from the EIS research environment as well as representatives from companies and the public sector.The project participants are on the whole agreed on the need for a gender perspective in the R&I environment, but struggle with the meeting of two epistemologically opposed theories of science. The understanding within gender studies that research and production both create reality and are informed by it is not always accepted within the areas of natural science. Engineering and other technological sciences not only consider aspects of science to be separate from reality, but also seek positivistic proof in research, something not always possible in the more qualitative research of the social sciences. Researching how these two perspectives meet within this specific project is the topic of this paper.

  • A Comparative Study of Fingerprint Image-Quality Estimation Methods

    • One of the open issues in fingerprint verification is the lack of robustness against image-quality degradation. Poor-quality images result in spurious and missing features, thus degrading the performance of the overall system. Therefore, it is important for a fingerprint recognition system to estimate the quality and validity of the captured fingerprint images. In this work, we review existing approaches for fingerprint image-quality estimation, including the rationale behind the published measures and visual examples showing their behavior under different quality conditions. We have also tested a selection of fingerprint image-quality estimation algorithms. For the experiments, we employ the BioSec multimodal baseline corpus, which includes 19 200 fingerprint images from 200 individuals acquired in two sessions with three different sensors. The behavior of the selected quality measures is compared, showing high correlation between them in most cases. The effect of low-quality samples in the verification performance is also studied for a widely available minutiae-based fingerprint matching system.

  • Iris Pupil Detection by Structure Tensor Analysis

    • This paper present a pupil detection/segmentation algorithm for iris images based on Structure Tensor analysis. Eigenvalues of the structure tensor matrix have been observed to be high in pupil boundaries and specular reflections of iris images. We exploit this fact to detect the specular reflections region and the boundary of the pupil in a sequential manner. Experimental results are given using the CASIA-IrisV3-Interval database (249 contributors, 396 different eyes, 2,639 iris images). Results show that our algorithm works specially well in detecting the specular reflections (98.98% success rate) and pupil boundary detection is correctly done in 84.24% of the images.

    • The demands on decreased environmental impact from vehicles are resulting in a strong push for decreased engine oil and fuel consumption.Recent engine tests have shown a promising reduction in oil consumption when using cylinder liners with a smoother finish than the current plateau honing.One approach to produce smoother liner surfaces is to replace SiC ceramic honing stones with diamond tools. However, even though the diamond honing process results in higher productivity, improved quality control is needed to monitor the degree of cold worked material - “blechmantel” (German), and the resulting risk of increased wear and scuffing.A number of petrol and diesel engine cylinder liners have been mapped to be able to verify the quality and consequences, in terms of wear and function, of the honing process. A new mapping method, combining SEM images and quantitative image analysis with traditional 2D profilometry has been developed and tested in this study. The surface mapping method developed was employed before and after the test to study effect of running-in wear on the surface, features characterized with the SEM- and the 2D profilometer.The results show that combining SEM- and profilometric methods gives a good picture of the effects of varying the cylinder liner pressure and roughness. The core roughness decreases more for diesel liners than for petrol liners.. A probable cause is that the more severe diesel high pressure run-in conditions are able to effectively “truncate” the plateaux and remove residing plastically deformed un-cut honing residues while the less severe petrol liner conditions do not manage to remove the blechmantel and irregularities to an important extent.

Engine oil and fuel consumption are to a great extent controlled by the topography of the cylinder liner surface.Recent engine tests have shown a promising reduction in oil consumption when using cylinder liners with a smoother finish than the current plateau honing.One approach to produce smoother liner surfaces is to replace SiC ceramic honing stones with diamond tools. However, event though the diamond honing process results in higher productivity, improved demands of quality control is needed to monitor the degree of cold worked material - “blechmantel” (German), and the resulting risk of increased wear and scuffing.A number of petrol and diesel engine cylinder liners have been mapped to be able to verify the quality and consequences, in terms of wear and function, of the honing process. A new mapping method, combining SEM images and quantitative image analysis with traditional 2D profilometry has been developed and tested in this study. The liners where tested in a reciprocating rig of 8 mm stroke and with a frequency of 10 Hz, simulating the top-dead center conditions in a running engine.The tests where carried out in high- and low pressure conditions with smooth respectively rough liner roughnesses against PVD coated piston rings. The developed surface mapping method was employed before and after the test to study effect of running-in wear on the surface, features characterized with the SEM- and the 2D profilometer.The results show that combining SEM- and profilometric methods gives a good picture of the effects of varying the cylinder liner pressure and roughness. The core roughness decrease more for diesel liners than for petrol liners. In average (rough and smooth liners) the diesel core roughness decrease 265% while the petrol liners average on a 60% decrease. Blechmantel- and Irregularities ratio show a high sensitivity to varying conditions and decrease 1180% to 100% for the diesel liners while the parameters increase between 106% to 18% for all the petrol liners. A probable cause is the more severe diesel high pressure run-in conditions are able to effectively “truncate” the plateaux and remove residing plastically deformed un-cut honing residues while the less severe petrol liner conditions not manage to remove the blechmantel and irregularities in an important extent.

    • Flerbostadshus och lokaler utgör 80 procent av kundunderlaget i de svenska fjärrvärmesystemen. Nivån på framtidens värmeanvändning i flerbostadshus och lokaler kommer att ha ett starkt inflytande på fjärrvärmens framtida ekonomi och dess investeringsbehov. Som utgångspunkt för en planerad studie av framtida värmebehov har vi utfört en omfattande analys av dagens värmeanvändning. Underlaget utgjordes av anonymiserade enkätsvar till SCB:s energistatistik för flerbostadshus och lokaler avse­ende 2006. Enkäterna kom från 11253 fastigheter med totalt 77,6 miljoner m2 bostads­ och lokalyta. Med olika uppräkningsfaktorer har skattningar erhållits för hela Sveriges bestånd av flerbostadshus och lokaler på totalt 310 miljoner m2, så enkätunderlaget var stort jämfört med det totala beståndet.Värmeanvändningen analyserades med avseende på följande parametrar: fördelning, graddagar, byggår, ventilationssystem, genomförda besparingsåtgärder och samdrift mel­lan olika sätt för värmetillförsel. En separat studie har genomförts av vad som känneteck­nar hög­ och låganvändare av värme. Kyl­ och vattenanvändning har också analyserats. Resultaten visar att de individuella variationerna var betydligt större än de sys­tematiska förklaringarna från de analyserade parametrarna. Drygt 10 % procent av beståndet var höganvändare av värme, som använde mer än 200 kWh/m2. Den ge­nomsnittliga skillnaden i värmeanvändning mellan norra och södra Sverige var liten. I byggårsanalysen avvek inte miljonprogrammets årgångar dramatiskt, vilket ofta hävdas i den svenska energidebatten. FTX-­system i flerbostadshus medförde i genomsnitt en lägre värmeanvändning med 11 kWh/m2. Denna lilla skillnad indikerar att FTX­-syste­mens värmeåtervinning bara har en årlig verkningsgrad på 20­30 procent. Funktionen är dock bättre i lokaler, där verkningsgraden för värmeåtervinning skattades till om­ kring 50 procent. Slutsatsen från analysen av genomförda besparingsåtgärder under de senaste 10 åren indikerade att det är eftersläntrare snarare än pionjärer som utförde åtgärderna. Dvs. det var främst höganvändare som blev medelanvändare efter genom­förda åtgärder. Det fanns nästan 34000 värmepumparna installerade i flerbostadshus och lokaler. Hälften av dessa återfanns i byggnader som var anslutna till fjärrvärme. I samdrift dominerar dock användning av fjärrvärme, speciellt i flerbostadshusen. Typiska höganvändare var byggnader i Västmanlands och Norrbottens län, bräns­leanvändare, viss samdrift med el, kommunala lokaler samt liten fastighetsstorlek. Typiska låganvändare var byggnader i Halland, värmepumpar (men det berodde på metodfelet att enbart tillfördel användes som mått på energitillförsel), statliga lokaler samt stora fastighetsstorlekar. Fjärrvärmeföretagen kan hjälpa sina kunder att identifiera sig som hög­, mellan­ eller låganvändare, om kundregistren systematiskt kompletteras med uppgifter om bostads­ och lokalytor. Värmeanvändningen över nivån 150 kWh/m2 stod enbart för 13 procent bland flerbostadshusen och 14 procent bland lokalerna under 2006. Elimi­nering av fjärrvärmens höganvändare skulle således ge en begränsad, men signifikant reduktion av de totala värmeleveranserna. Våra 6 övergripande slutsatser från projektet blev:• Individuella variationer dominerar över systematiska orsaker till höga eller låga nivåer för den specifika användningen av värme i flerbostadshus och lokaler.• Några signifikanta systematiska orsaker har dock identifierats• Det finns behov av lokal mätning av el till värmeändamål, av vatten som ska bli varmvatten samt av värmeproduktion från värmepumpar• Fjärrvärmeföretagen skulle kunna hjälpa sina kunder att identifiera sig som hög­, mellan­ eller låganvändare.• Det finns på kort sikt en signifikant potential för lägre värmeanvändning i svenska flerbostadshus och lokaler• Effektivisering av byggnaders värmebehov kommer troligen att vara den domine­rande konkurrensutsättningen av fjärrvärme i framtiden

    • Classical reinforcement learning mechanisms and a modular neural network are unified for conceiving an intelligent autonomous system for mobile robot navigation. The conception aims at inhibiting two common navigation deficiencies: generation of unsuitable cyclic trajectories and ineffectiveness in risky configurations. Distinct design apparatuses are considered for tackling these navigation difficulties, for instance: 1) neuron parameter for memorizing neuron activities (also functioning as a learning factor), 2) reinforcement learning mechanisms for adjusting neuron parameters (not only synapse weights), and 3) a inner-triggered reinforcement. Simulation results show that the proposed system circumvents difficulties caused by specific environment configurations, improving the relation between collisions and captures.
