  • Pragmatiska studier av meningsskapande
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Utbildning och Demokrati. - 1102-6472 .- 2001-7316. ; 17:3, s. 11-24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The overall aim of the article is to present a pragmatic approach for studies of meaning-making used in the articles of this issue. The approach, which is developed within the SMEDgroup (Studies of Meaning-making in Educational Discourses), mainly builds on the writings of John Dewey, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Michel Foucault. A common ambition for the researchers in SMED is to enable studies and discussions on questions concerning how meanings are made in people’s actions. Another ambition is to carry out these studies beyond assumptions of dualism, essentialism, causality and determinism. In this perspective learning and socialization are viewed in a communicative perspective. We argue in the article that our approach makes it possible, and important, to study meaning-making in action in different kinds of educational practices.

  • Children with hearing impairment : living with cochlear implants or with hearing aids
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0165-5876 .- 1872-8464. ; 75:6, s. 844-849
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective The aim of this study was to enhance knowledge about the life circumstances of children with cochlear implants or hearing aids, regarding daily functioning and attitude to the impairment. Methods Data were obtained from 36 children with cochlear implants and 38 children with hearing aids via study-specific questionnaires with fixed answer alternatives. The questions covered (1) usage of aids and related factors, (2) hearing in different everyday situations, (3) thoughts about the children's own hearing and others’ attitudes to it, and (4) choice of language. The data were analyzed using SPSS, and presented via the theoretical frame of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, Child and Youth version (ICF-CY). Results Children with CI and HA functioned equally well in daily life, but there were also certain differences. Symptoms from neck and shoulders were more common among children with hearing aids than among children with cochlear implants (p < .001). Children with hearing aids used their aids significantly less often than those with cochlear implants (p < .001). The participation variables showed that children with hearing aids had significantly more hearing problems in team sports (p = .033) and outdoor activities (p = .019), in comparison to children with cochlear implants. The two groups had similar thoughts regarding their own hearing, mostly considering it not to be a problem. They also did not generally think that other people found their hearing to be a problem. Conclusions Children with cochlear implants and children with hearing aids have, in some aspects, equally good functioning in everyday life situations. However, certain differences were found in dimensions of functioning, regarding neck and shoulder pain, usage of aids and sign language, and hearing problems in some activities.

  • Children "Left Behind". : A study on children of migrant women in Sri Lanka.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Women and migration in South Asia : health and social consequences : workshop proceedings, 9th to 11th February, 2009, Colombo, Sri Lanka. - Uppsala : Department of Women's and Children's Health, Uppsala University. - 9789197867719 ; , s. 114-126
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents partial findings of an ongoing study in Sri Lanka, on children to female migrant domestic workers in the Middle East. The overall aim of the study is to contribute to a contextual understanding of the impact of the mother’s migration on children’s living conditions and everyday life by identifying factors that may worsen or alleviate the condition of being left behind. One emerging factor is the number of migration cycles of the mother. The leading questions are: How do households cope with the responsibility of caring for the children in the face of recurrent migration cycles of the mother? Are the solutions found always in the best interest of the children? Preliminary results indicated a clear relationship between the number of migration cycles of the mother and the level of tolerance and capability of the children’s caretakers in fulfilling their role, which ultimately puts the welfare of the children at risk.

  • Uncertain Future for Kyrgyzstan's Drug Control Agency
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Central Asia-Caucasus Analyst. - Washington : Johns Hopkins University, Central Asia-Caucasus Institute, Silk Road Studies Program. ; 8:13, s. 10-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Kyrgyzstan’s Drug Control Agency is a key entity in counter-narcotics in Central Asia. The DCA has the status of a law enforcement agency in its own right. It is nevertheless affected both by international and domestic politics. It is entirely funded by the United States, and continued uncertainty regarding Kyrgyz-U.S. relations makes continued funding for the DCA uncertain, just as it the contract is coming up for renewal. Domestically, the DCA suffers from the weakness of its operations in the South, the main locus of drug trafficking. Rumors over imminent changes in leadership further contribute to the DCA’s uncertainty
