    • The following article presents and discusses four high medieval swords (12th to 13th centuries) deriving from the Uppland- (Uppsala) or the Värmland-region (Karlstad) in Sweden. Two of the Uppsala-swords were the main part of an exhibition (entitled “Svärd från Sveriges turbulenta barndom” or “Swords from Sweden’s turbulent childhood”) that was open to public from July 2007 to January 2008 in the Museum Gustavianum in Uppsala (Fyris UMF/B 74 and 78). The Värmland-sword (Nr. 17001-34945) is kept in the Värmlands Museum in Karlstad. The forth sword to be included was found near the town hall in Uppsala, but it is now kept in the Historical Museum in Stockholm. The archaeological and typological data of all the swords are presented here for the first time.The main focal point of the article is the examination of the hitherto unpublished epigraphic evidence, namely the metal inlay, gold and silver inscriptions on the blades. A comparison with specimens in Germany (Deutsches Historisches Museum, Zeughaussammlung Berlin) revealed a close relationship between the blade-inscriptions on the Swedish and the German swords), potentially even a provenance from the same workshop. By analyzing the letter sequences it was possible to categorize the inscriptions in three different subgroups (DIC-, SDX- and INNOMINEDOMINI-group). Although a definite reading could not be given, the intense examination brought to light arguments that led to the interpretation as religious invocations, probably addressed to Jesus Christ himself.

  • A comparison between written and spoken narratives in aphasia

    • The aim of the present study was to explore how a personal narrative told by a group of eight persons with aphasia differed between written and spoken language, and to compare this with findings from 10 participants in a reference group. The stories were analysed through holistic assessments made by 60 participants without experience of aphasia and through measurement of lexical and syntactic variables. The findings showed that the participants with aphasia generally received lower ratings than the reference group, but also that stories written by participants with aphasia were rated as easier to understand, more interesting, and more coherent than the group’s spoken stories. Regression analysis showed that syntax could predict several of the rated variables for the stories told by the participants with aphasia. Results point to the need to include writing training in language rehabilitation in order to increase the ability for persons with aphasia to participate in communicative situations in everyday life.

  • Aphasia and the process of revision in writing a text

    • Most of the previous research on aphasia and writing ability concentrates on the production of words in isolation. The purpose of the current study was to examine the process of producing written texts by clients with aphasia. By using keystroke logging, it was possible to analyse the participants' ongoing work during text writing. Results showed that the participants with aphasia composed their texts in what may be described as a linear way. Edits concerning syntax or text structure were almost absent in the subjects' data, but they spent much time and effort on revising smaller units of text, that is, letters and words, possibly as a result of changing their minds or not being able to realize their intentions. However, these changes did not always result in correctly written words in the final text. The findings are discussed in relation to current writing theories.

  • Bootstrapping Language Description The case of Mpiemo (Bantu A, Central African Republic)

    • Linguists have long been producing grammatical decriptions of yet undescribed languages. This is a time-consuming process, which has already adapted to improved technology for recording and storage. We present here a novel application of NLP techniques to bootstrap analysis of collected data and speed-up manual selection work. To be more precise, we argue that unsupervised induction of morphology and part-of-speech analysis from raw text data is mature enough to produce useful results. Experiments with Latent Semantic Analysis were less fruitful. We exemplify this on Mpiemo, a so-far essentially undescribed Bantu language of the Central African Republic, for which raw text data was available.

    • Funktionell grammatik är en grammatik som sätter språkets betydelse i fokus. Här ställs frågor som: Hur skapar och upprätthåller vi relationer med hjälp av språket? Hur använder vi språket för att förstå och beskriva våra erfarenheter? Hur utnyttjar vi grammatiken för att skapa flöden av information? Den funktionella grammatiken har rötter i den brittisk-australiske språkvetaren Michael Hallidays arbeten. Här presenteras modellen som helhet för första gången på svenska. Grammatiken illustreras genom ett stort urval exempel hämtade från olika sammanhang, bland annat sjukvårdsinformation på Internet, en ridlektion och ett panelsamtal i tv. Boken är främst avsedd för grundutbildningar i ämnet svenska, för såväl grammatisk analys som textanalys, men vänder sig också till forskare och språkarbetare av olika slag.

    • This thesis investigates the development of root and non-root meanings of modal verbs through an empirical study of the verbs må and kunna in Old Swedish. Modality is taken to refer domains in which possibility contrasts with necessity. In Old Swedish, må (magha) and kunna 'may' and kunna 'can' have the potential to express most of the meanings relating to possibility and necessity, as well as lexical meanings.The two verbs are investigated in an Old Swedish corpus consisting of legal and religious texts. Certain default correlations between type of modal and semantic and syntatic enviroments, which have been proposed in the litterature, are investigated.The result shows that må frequently expresses participant-internal possibility, 'ability' and deonic possibility, 'permission', whereas kunna is mainly associated with participant-internal and general external possibility. Of particular interest is the use of må in conditions, which provides evidence that this construction type may have played a bridging role in the development on non-root modality.Using the framework of force dynamics, the development of modal meaning is analysed as a metamorphical transfer of one consistent image-schema between different conceptual domains. the schematic components are described in terms of forces and barriers. The proposed transfer from a physical to a social domain and further on to a mental and a conversional domain provides a good account of the diachronic development.

Huvuddelen av rapporten redovisar en studie som visar i vilken omfattning bilder förekommer i alfabetiseringsunderivsningen och vilka olika typer av bilder det är frågan om. Analysen av vilka bild- och inlärarrelaterade faktorer som lärare tar hänsyn till vid sina val visar att deltagarnas förmåga att uppfatta bilder många gånger undervärderas.

    • Abstract in Undetermined Background: Individuals with aphasia often experience difficulties in writing. Word processors with a spell checker and a grammar checker can compensate for some of the writing difficulties associated with aphasia. Aims: To determine if writing difficulties associated with aphasia may be reduced by the use of a computerised writing aid when training patients. Methods Procedures: The writing aids used in this study were originally designed specifically for persons with developmental reading and writing difficulties and are based on statistics of frequent misspellings and phonotactic rules. Three participants with aphasia selected one of two offered writing aids. Written production during treatment and evaluation was recorded and analysed by keystroke logging. The study had a single-subject ABA design replicated across three participants. The baseline (A) was established by measuring four dependent variables. During a 9-week intervention phase (B) the dependent variables were measured once a week. A follow-up (A) was done 10 months after the training was finished. The dependent variables were: total number of words in a writing task; proportion of correctly written words; words per minute; proportion of successful edits. The results were analysed both visually and by statistical calculations. Outcomes Results: All participants experienced a positive improvement in their writing ability. Results showed individual differences; after completed training the first participant made more successful edits, the second wrote more words, had a larger proportion of correctly written words, and made more successful edits. The third participant's results did not show any improvement that could be statistically supported. Conclusions: This study showed that the computerised training facilitated the generating process and made the revision process more efficient for the participants. The results are important in that they indicate possible ways of designing writing treatment. However, they also show the need for careful analyses when evaluating different treatment strategies and in discussing what improved writing ability may be.
