  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Speaker Classification : Volume I. - Berlin : Springer Verlag. - 978-3-540-74186-2
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on the detection of emotion in speech and the impact that using technology to automate emotion detection would have within the legal system. The current states of the art for studies of perception and acoustics are described, and a number of implications for legal contexts are provided. We discuss, inter alia, assessment of emotion in others, witness credibility, forensic investigation, and training of law enforcement officers.

  • Between connectivity and modality : reported speech in interpreter-mediated doctor-patient communication
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Connectivity in grammar and discourse. - Amsterdam; Philadelphia : Benjamins. - 9789027219251 ; s. 395-417
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • This paper analyzes data from doctor-patient interaction mediated by nonprofessional ad hoc-interpreters with a focus on the performance of ad hocinterpreters and their use of verba dicendi (“to say”, “to tell”, “to mean to say”). Our analysis of the Turkish and Portuguese language data shows that in both languages markers of reported speech are used both to establish ‘interactional coherence’ (Bührig 2002), and to express speaker stance. It seems that verba dicendi serve to especially emphasize the reliability of information provided by the doctor. In line with a general shift towards a more dynamic concept for the role of interpreters, our results also indicate that the different communicative functions of markers of reported speech should be part of interpreter training.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    •  The present article discusses toponyms in different languages referring to the same geographical location, making a distinction between similarity in sound (phonetic adaptation, name quotation, etc.) and similarity in sense (name translation, etc.). In the latter case, following Coates (2005), a distinction is made between semantic reference, onymic reference, and apparent etymological sense. The short theoretical introduction is illustrated with examples from bilingual or multilingual areas such as Southern Austria (Kärnten—with German and Slovenian place-names) and, particularly, Hong Kong, which exhibits an intricate interplay between two varieties of Chinese—Cantonese and Mandarin—and English, where, due to the funda- mental differences between the Chinese and English writing systems, particular attention is paid to the different Romanization methods for Chinese.

  • Interaction of syntax and discourse pragmatics in closely related languages : How native Swedes, native Germans, and Swedish-speaking learners of German start their sentences
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Researching interfaces in linguistics. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 978-0-19-9567264-9 ; s. 331-350
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • This paper investigates the interaction of syntax and discourse in two closely related languages, Swedish and German, and identifies language-specific distributional patterns and discourse-pragmatic differences concerning the clause-initial ‘prefield’ position of verb-second clauses. New corpus data indicate that Swedish has a much stronger tendency than German to place new information later in the clause. Swedish uses the prefield mainly for informationally given elements and expletives, whilst German regularly allows new information in clause-initial position. The stricter Swedish constraints on what can and does occur in the prefield have repercussions for L2 acquisition at the grammar-pragmatics interface. The paper discusses data from native speakers of Swedish learning German as a foreign language, showing that mastery of pure V2 syntax is well in advance of appropriate discourse-pragmatic use of that syntax. Syntactic and pragmatic transfer from Swedish results in L2 texts that are unidiomatic and not fully cohesive from a native-speaker perspective.

  • Funktionen von Modalverben in Überschriften von Zeitungsnachrichten : ein multilingualer Vergleich (Deutsch vs. Französisch, Portugiesisch, Spanisch)
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Pressetextsorten im Sprachvergleich = Contrasting text types in the press. - Hildesheim; ; Zürich; New York : Olms. - 3-487-12941-8 ; s. 185-202
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • This paper argues that in news headlines – owing to their high context sensitivity – modal verbs involve the reader mentally to a high degree. In order to understand the meaning of a headline containing a modal verb, the reader has to reconstruct the contexts selected by the author. He has to do this in the first place in interaction with his own contextualized stock of knowledge. Further, he will form a hypothesis about the degree of probability of the possible contexts. This process of reconstruction creates an expectation about the news itself. This basic function of modalverbs in news headlines is the same for the four languages considered in this paper (German, French, Portuguese and Spanish); nevertheless, there are some language-specific norms for their use and decoding. Themost salient example is the epistemic use of Portuguese poder ‘can’/‘may’and dever ‘must’ in the present tense.

  • Nonnative acquisition of Verb Second On the empirical underpinnings of universal L2 claims
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: The function of function words and functional categories. - Amsterdam & Philadelphia : John Benjamins. - 90-272-2802-7 ; s. 41-77
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • Acquiring Germanic verb second is typically described as difficult for second-languagelearners. Even speakers of a V2-language (Swedish) learning another V2-language (German)are said not to transfer V2 but to start with a non-V2 grammar, following a universaldevelopmental path of verb placement. The present study contests this claim, documentingearly targetlike V2 production for 6 Swedish ab-initio (and 23 intermediate) learners ofGerman, at a time when their interlanguage syntax elsewhere is nontargetlike (head-initialVPs). Learners whose only nonnative language is German never violate V2, indicatingtransfer of V2-L1 syntax. Informants with previous knowledge of English are less targetlikein their L3-German productions, indicating interference from non-V2 English. V2 per se isthus not universally difficult for nonnative learners.
