  • A framework for the constitution of modelling processes : a proposition
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Operational Research. - : Elsevier. - 0377-2217 .- 1872-6860. ; 145:1, s. 202-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Given that the quality of models significantly affects the outcome of their application, it is important to reflect on the process by which they are actually constructed. This is addressed by the proposed Framework for the Constitution of Modelling Processes, which is presented here along with a few examples of its practical application. This framework is founded on Projective Constructivist Epistemology and provides a generic description of modelling processes, including their purpose, behaviour and structure. The framework may serve as a meta-model for the understanding, classification, use and development of the many different contributions to the field of modelling. Over the past five years, the framework has been actively researched, developed and applied in a variety of practical contexts, including the public, military and business sectors.

  • Multimodal investigation of a business process and information system redesign : a post-implementation case study
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Systems research and behavioral science. - London : John Wiley & Sons. - 1092-7026 .- 1099-1743. ; 18:2, s. 181-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multi-modal systems thinking (MST) has emerged in recent years as an alternative scientific paradigm to the more established ones, founded on positivistic, hermeneutic and critical bases, respectively. Among others, MST offers a system researcher and practitioner the multi-modal theory as an analysis and design tool. An attempt to use this is presented in this article. More specifically, a situation where an implementation of a new business process, supported by a new computerized information system, has taken place causing some unpredicted and unwanted consequences is presented. This case is analysed with the help of multi-modal theory, leading to an identification of system design shortcomings. This exercise shows that the employed theory is a powerful tool for construction of multi-perspective models; it provides plausible intelligibility for why unexpected consequences emerged. Further, its use generated some heuristics for future systems modelling, analysis and design. The study also shows that the theory is ambiguous in its application; this in turn calls for its further development and operationalization.

  • On the Usefulness of the Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model of System Types for the Design of Business Systems
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Systemic Practice and Action Research. - London : Springer. - 1094-429X .- 1573-9295. ; 17:2, s. 75-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model of System Types distinguishes 3 fundamental empirical systems: deterministic, animate, and social, with regard to their purpose. It has been formulated as a meta-model to support understanding, selection, and formulation of management models and theories. It is argued here that this model is also valuable for the interpretation and design of actual, empirical business systems. A study of a malfunctioning business is presented and interpreted with the Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model, which supports this argument. Additionally, the study shows a pragmatic value of the proposed “Imperative of Goals Alignment” for the design of business systems, which is an operationalization of the Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model. Furthermore, the investigation illustrates the importance of clear goals and incentives in business design; and it supports the thesis of the Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model that management models and theories, founded upon empirical observations of deterministic and animate systems, impose limitations on the design of business systems.

  • Emergent functions in Intranet information management
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Knowledge Management in Electronic Government. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783540401452 - 9783540448365 ; , s. 186-191
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organizations and municipalities implements advanced information technology, intranets, in order to enhance information management within the organization.. This technology is implemented with great reliance on the technology aspect. New functions emerge as a consequence of technology, functions not planned for. This paper puts focus one such function, the key persons responsible for publishing on intranets. A descriptive study shows that these persons do exist and describes some problems they appreciate.

  • Digital divides revisited : towards a model for analysis
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Electronic government. - Berlin : Springer. - 9783540229162 ; , s. 289-292
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a model for categories of divides, and how these categories are interrelated. The factors are found by a literature study from different countries attempting to measure various divides. The model is based on earlier research on the ‘divide’ and includes: physical access, autonomy of use, know-how and motivation. Depending on the type of digital divide and the local situation, rectifying efforts must address the most crucial factor, which could be any of the four. The paper also introduces the nature and amount of different proposed divides, and relations among factors.

  • On knowledge management : a field study
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Internet-Based Organisational Memory and Knowledge Management. - : IPG Group Publishing. - 9781878289827 ; , s. 170-198
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is widely acknowledged that knowledge is one of the most important assets of today's organizations. According to Davenport and Prusak (1998), knowledge is often a company's greatest competitive advantage in a global economy. How to support the company's knowledge-intensive work processes (e.g., quality support, product design or strategic planning) is therefore becoming a vital issue in many organizations worldwide. Identification, analysis and characterization of the knowledge-intensive work processes become essential in order to qualify a discussion of how to support knowledge management processes. This chapter presents, discusses and reflects upon findings from a study of how highly skilled actors manage information and knowledge, i.e., how information is gathered from a wide range of sources, structured according to needs and relevance for the users, and disseminated to the relevant suppliers in the organization. The aim of the chapter is two-folded: first, to contribute to the general empirical body of knowledge about knowledge-intensive work, especially focusing on the central characteristics of the knowledge management processes; secondly, to initiate a discussion of which overall requirements we must set up for how knowledge management processes could be supported by means of information and communication technology. Knowledge-intensive work processes often concern collaborative problem-solving and mutual support that require effective ways of handling information and knowledge between different people, both in short-term and long-term situations. The distributed and dynamic nature of knowledge management work also imposes a high degree of complexity involving many different actors with different conceptualizations, interpretations, perspectives, needs, etc. of the knowledge produced and approached. The various actors have different perspectives on the concept of knowledge. The work needed to articulate knowledge and make information and knowledge accessible becomes extremely demanding and complex. Often face-to-face interaction is required. However, in complex and collaborative work settings the problem of articulating knowledge by rich interaction and communication is obvious. The actors are distributed both geographically and temporally. There is a need for computer-based mechanisms for interaction and coordination of information and knowledge (cf. e.g., Carstensen and Wulf, 1998).
