Medicine At A Distance In Sweden: Spatiotemporal Matters In Accomplishing Working Telemedicine
2011
Ingår i: Science Studies. - 0786-3012. ; 24:2, s. 43-62
Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat) abstract
This paper examines the accomplishment of making technology work, using the discourse around telemedicine in Swedish healthcare during 1994-2003. The paper will compare four projects launched in the mid-1990s and policymakers’ visions of healthcare through telemedicine. I will employ a sociotechnical approach developed within Actor-Network Theory that understands functioning technology not as something intrinsic but as an outcome of an ongoing process of negotiations. In the paper, I will extend the sociotechnical approach of what constitutes working technology to include spatiotemporal matters. I will also approach the closely related issue of space that has become a concern of Actor-Network Theory scholars interested in the accomplishment and continued workings of technology as it travels. In this discussion, an emphasis on fixed relations (network space) has been challenged by investigations into changing relations (fluid space). This paper suggests that in order to travel well, technology must be both fixed and fluid.⁰

2011
Ingår i: Studies in Health Technology and Informatics. - 0926-9630 .- 1879-8365. - 9781607508052 ; 169, s. 676-80
Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat) abstract
We examined the efficacy of a remotely based occupational therapy intervention. A 40-year-old woman who suffered a stroke participated in a telerehabilitation program. The intervention method is based on virtual reality gaming to enhance the training experience and to facilitate the relearning processes. The results indicate that Virtual TeleRehab is an effective method for motivational, economical, and practical reasons by combining game-based rehabilitation in the home with weekly distance meetings. © 2011 European Federation for Medical Informatics. Social media affordances in net-based higher education
2011
Ingår i: Proceedings of the IADIS International Conference on International Higher Education (IHE 2011). - Shanghai, China : IADIS Press. - 9789728939564 ; , s. 11-37
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat) abstract
This paper explores the attitudes, conceptions and use of social media in net-based higher education. By using statistical and content analysis of data generated by two surveys directed to students (n = 109) and teachers (n = 77) involved in net-based higher education, we explore how social media influence the design of learning context in net-based higher education courses. By applying the affordance theory, we describe actual as well as preferred use of social media from an educational, social, and technical perspectives. The results showed that the potential use of social media have not yet been fully found in the context of net-based higher education. However, the perceived benefit of using social media differs in relation to educational topics. The potential use of social media in net-based higher education courses is discussed.

Techno-socio-economic analysis report
2011
Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt) abstract
The main purpose of this report is to explore the socio-techno-economic key factors and activities of relevance for the development of a sustainable testbed federation in Europe. In this process there is a need of incorporating a business model framework for enabling decision making in value creation and value capturing. This study shows that the federation has great opportunities to reach a broad market via the key partners networks. In this federation a span of testbeds are involved which provides a large knowledge and resource base. By being involved in the federation, partners and customers get access to a great variety of technical competences as well as testing resources for remote tests. Through the use of the resources offered in the federation, customers can build their own virtual testbed which makes it easier and cheaper for them to perform tests before their technology enters the market.

Collaborative practice : an action research approach to efficient ITSM
2011
Ingår i: 1 st International & Inter-disciplinary Workshop on Practice Research.
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat) abstract
This paper addresses collaborative research as an action research approach. Many times action research is described as embracing one research organisation and one business organisation. We are challenging this view by introducing the concept of collaborative practice. A collaborative practice can be seen as a cluster of local practices and researchers working together. In this way, a collaborative practice should enable joint learning between, and joint development efforts for, several business practices as well as contributing to general practice and the scientific body of knowledge. Based on a case study within efficient IT Service Management (ITSM), the concept of collaborative practice and its relation to other adjacent concepts (such as local practice, general practice and scientific body of knowledge) have been characterized. Our results should be viewed as preliminary since they are gathered from an ongoing project.

Talking heads on the internet : social interaction in a multi-user voice based 3d graphical environment
2011
Ingår i: Proceedings of IRIS 2011.. - 9789521226489
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat) abstract
This paper reports on the finding from a qualitative study which investigated how long-termusers of Traveler, a voice-based 3D online graphical environment launched in 1996 and stillrunning, experience their social relations in relation to this specific cue-rich communicationtechnology. The paper describes the subjective perceptions of the technology-mediated socialexperience such as the experience of social atmosphere in the community, of onlinefriendship, of the meaning of the online social interaction in the users' offline lives. The paperalso discusses the importance of these subjective experiences for motivation to regularly useTraveler. Conclusions drawn from the study suggest that it is crucial for users to have theability to handle the technical functions of the program in order to function socially in theenvironment such as using the functions of the graphical program and using the voice channelin a social significant way. As a result, in order to have a positive and meaningful socialexperience in online it is critical for users to adapt to technical as well as to social factors. This process of adaptation is very important since the way functions are used was interpretedas social signals by users suggesting that social and technical aspects are intertwined in socialpractice. The paper describes this process of adaptation and the positive social effects of asuccessful adaptation.

Harnessing Handheld Computing – Managing IS Support to the Digital Ranger with Defensive Design
2011
Ingår i: Service-oriented perspectives in design science research: 6th international conference. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 0302-9743 .- 1611-3349. - 9783642206320 - 9783642206337 ; 6629, s. 62-76
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat) abstract
The recent years of development in mobile computing as powerful handheld computers and high-speed wireless networks creates opportunities for new user-groups in the mobile workforce to take advantage of mobile technologies. User-groups may be more or less geographical distributed and as a consequence more or less marooned when it comes to obtaining IT/IS support and this increases the complexity of delivering IT/IS support to these geographically distributed end-users. In this design paper the aim is to develop a design theory to manage problems in IT/IS support to the outbound user. Semistructured interviews were performed with developers and documents studies of an information system comprising handheld mobile computing devices for drivers. From the interviews, a design theory based on the implemented strategy of defensive design is presented. The six components of IS design theory by Gregor and Jones is applied as a theoretical framework for evaluation of the design theory.
