  • From Vision to Transition : Exploring the Potential for Public Information Services to Facilitate Sustainable Urban Transport
  • 2014
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Policy initiatives to promote sustainable travel through the use of Internet based public information systems have increased during the last decade. Stockholm, in being one of the first cities in Europe to implement an Internet based service for facilitating sustainable travel is believed to be a good candidate for an analysis of key issues for developing sustainable travel planning services to the public.Aim: This thesis investigates the past development of two Stockholm based public information systems and their services in order to draw lessons on how to better provide for a public information service geared towards facilitating  environmentally sustainable travel planning through information and communications technology. The overall goal of the thesis is to contribute to an understanding on how to better design and manage current and future attempts at facilitating sustainable travel planning services based on historical case studies.Approach: The thesis draws ideas from the concept of organizational responsiveness – an organization’s ability to listen, understand and respond to demands put to it by its internal and external stakeholders – in order to depict how well or not the two public information systems and their owners have adapted to established norms and values of their surroundings. Results: Overall, the findings from the historical case studies suggest that organizations attempting to provide sustainable travel planning to the public need to design and manage their systems in such a way that it responds to shifting demands on how to provide for information. Implementing and embedding new technologies involves complex processes of change both at the micro level – for users and practitioners of the service – and at the meso level for the involved public service organizations themselves. This condition requires a contextualist framework to analyze and understand organizational, contextual and cultural issues involved in the adoption of new technologies and procedures. Conclusions: The thesis concludes with a discussion on how the findings from the historical case studies may provide lessons for both current and future attempts at providing public information systems geared towards facilitating environmentally sustainable travel planning to the public. Historical examples and issues concerning collective intelligence and peer to peer based forms of designing, producing and supervising public information services identified throughout the study are looked upon and discussed in terms of their possible role in increasing the potential for public information services to facilitate sustainable urban transport.

  • The liability of politicalness : Legitimacy and legality in piracy-proximate entrepreneurship
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 22:4, s. 408-425
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores three entrepreneurial ventures that have evolved in proximity to online piracy. In reviewing the respective cases of Spotify, Skype, and The Pirate Bay, the argument outlines the radically divergent strategies with which the entrepreneurs have sought to legitimise their ventures and underlying technologies. The article concludes that: 1) the context of practices labelled ‘pirate’ are paradigmatic examples of fields in which entrepreneurs must work exceptionally hard to legitimise themselves; 2) in this context, it is crucial that the role of law is analytically isolated from the role of institutionalised legitimacy; 3) success in legitimisation is largely dependent upon the entrepreneur’s ability to demonstrate that the venture is governed by ‘the natural order’ of the economy. It is further argued that piracy-proximate ventures may contribute to the entrepreneurship field, inasmuch as they teeter on the border of being considered too disruptive, and thus suffer from a ‘liability of politicalness’.

  • Expanding the HCI Agenda in Healthcare
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems. - : IEEE. - 9781479944354 ; , s. 382-385
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Designing technology for use in healthcare, and its evaluation in the healthcare setting, deserves special attention because of the nature of the special context of use. Biological hazards and the risk of infection, issues of privacy and security, system response times, as well as human factors and patient safety are identified as areas deserving of special attention. We give examples and quote from clinician interviews for illustration, and we argue that increased focus from the HCI community on these areas will bring tangible benefits of health information systems to healthcare staff, and ultimately improve patient services.

  • Statistical Analysis of Requirements Prioritization for Transition to Web Technologies : A Case Study in an Electric Power Organization
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Software Quality. Model-Based Approaches for Advanced Software and Systems Engineering. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319036021 - 9783319036014 ; , s. 63-84
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transition from an existing IT system to modern Web technologies provides multiple benefits to an organization and its customers. Such a transition in a large organization involves various groups of stakeholders who may prioritize differently the requirements of the software under development. In our case study, the organization is a leading domestic company in the field of electricity power. The existing online system supports the customer service along with the technical activities and has more than 1,500 registered users, while simultaneous access can be reached by 300 users. The paper presents an empirical study where 51 employees in different roles prioritize 18 software requirements using hierarchical cumulative voting. The goal of this study is to test significant differences in prioritization between groups of stakeholders. Statistical methods involving data transformation, ANOVA and Discriminant Analysis were applied to data. The results showed significant differences between roles of the stakeholders in certain requirements.

  • Slow Tech : The bridge between computer ethics and business ethics
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings 11th International Conference on human Choice and computers, HC11, 2014. - Berlin/Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783662442074 ; , s. 92-106
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses the difficult task of implementing the concept of Slow Tech, that is,information and communication technology (ICT) that is good, clean and fair, in a businessenvironment. It investigates the democratic, environmental, and social challenges currently facingICT vendors. More specifically, it examines the opportunities available for these companies to useSlow Tech as a bridging mechanism between their Computer Ethics and their Business Ethicsstrategies, based on Corporate Social Responsibility. Last but not least, it highlights what some"next step" questions for further investigation and implementation might be and the challenges ofimplementing these.

  • Situational Method Engineering
  • 2014
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • While previously available methodologies for software – like those published in the early days of object technology – claimed to be appropriate for every conceivable project, situational method engineering (SME) acknowledges that most projects typically have individual characteristics and situations. Thus, finding the most effective methodology for a particular project needs specific tailoring to that situation. Such a tailored software development methodology needs to take into account all the bits and pieces needed for an organization to develop software, including the software process, the input and output work products, the people involved, the languages used to describe requirements, design, code, and eventually also measures of success or failure. The authors have structured the book into three parts. Part I deals with all the basic concepts, terminology and overall ideas underpinning situational method engineering. As a summary of this part, they present a formal meta-model that enables readers to create their own quality methods and supporting tools. In Part II, they explain how to implement SME in practice, i.e., how to find method components and put them together and how to evaluate the resulting method. For illustration, they also include several industry case studies of customized or constructed processes, highlighting the impact that high-quality engineered methods can have on the success of an industrial software development. Finally, Part III summarizes some of the more recent and forward-looking ideas. This book presents the first summary of the state of the art for SME. For academics, it provides a comprehensive conceptual framework and discusses new research areas. For lecturers, thanks to its step-by-step explanations from basics to the customization and quality assessment of constructed methods, it serves as a solid basis for comprehensive courses on the topic. For industry methodologists, it offers a reference guide on features and technologies to consider when developing in-house software development methods or customising and adopting off-the-shelf ones.

  • Computers, time and speed : Five slow tech case studies
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ICT and society. - Berlin/Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783662442074 ; , s. 122-135
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter examines briefly the notions of time and speed. It introduces the notion of Slow Tech:information technology that is good, clean and fair, and places an especial emphasis on technologythat is clean. This chapter does not delve deep into the Slow Tech concept. Rather, it highlights a setof arguments about why speed is not always important or necessary. People are now increasinglybeginning to think about much longer periods and phases that may extend at least as long as theexistence of human beings on the globe. As illustrations, the chapter explores five specific casestudies. Each comes from a different location, yet all describe global implications and challenges. One example is in fact a mathematical model. Two sites, in sympathy with the location of theHuman Choice and Computing 11 (HCC11) conference, are from Scandinavia – one from Onkalo,Finland, and a second from Svalbard, a northern Norwegian island. A further two cases are from theUnited States of America. The logic behind these five case studies strengthens the arguments aboutwhy − with the support of the Slow Tech concept − it is increasingly important for society and itsmany stakeholders to question the current information and communication technology (ICT)obsession with speed and rethink the relationships between society and technology.
