  • Mobile communications initiatives: Channels, content, conversation and trade mapping in Europe and the USA
  • 2016
  • In: OBS - Observatorio. - 1646-5954. ; 10:1, s. 201-217
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The global implementation of mobile telephony and the growth the smartphone and tablets market has galvanized the printed media industry into focusing on the design strategies with the purpose of producing and re-purposing content for these devices. This article presents findings on 14 digital news providers mobile platforms, among which 13 operate in Europe and one in the United States. The article analyzes similarities and differences in their initiatives with regards to how they provide news content for different channels, how they enable conversation, and also their approach to commerce. For this purpose, a mixed methodology was used, combining techniques for obtaining both quantitative and qualitative information. The cross-sectional content analysis focused on mobile news sites and apps. The findings show that mobile news content is mainly textual, but also includes pictures. There are limited possibilities for conversation, as the news providers do not take advantage of such mobile device features much. © 2016 (Alba Silva Rodríguez, Xosé López García, Oscar Westlund and Nancy Graciela Ulloa Erazo).

  • Technical Debt tracking: Current state of practice: A survey and multiple case study in 15 large organizations
  • 2018
  • In: Science of Computer Programming. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-6423. ; 163, s. 42-61
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Large software companies need to support continuous and fast delivery of customer value both in the short and long term. However, this can be hindered if both the evolution and maintenance of existing systems are hampered by Technical Debt. Although a lot of theoretical work on Technical Debt has been produced recently, its practical management lacks empirical studies. In this paper, we investigate the state of practice in several companies to understand what the cost of managing TD is, what tools are used to track TD, and how a tracking process is introduced in practice. We combined two phases: a survey involving 226 respondents from 15 organizations and an in-depth multiple case study in three organizations including 13 interviews and 79 Technical Debt issues. We selected the organizations where Technical Debt was better tracked in order to distill best practices. We found that the development time dedicated to managing Technical Debt is substantial (an average of 25% of the overall development), but mostly not systematic: only a few participants (26%) use a tool, and only 7.2% methodically track Technical Debt. We found that the most used and effective tools are currently backlogs and static analyzers. By studying the approaches in the companies participating in the case study, we report how companies start tracking Technical Debt and what the initial benefits and challenges are. Finally, we propose a Strategic Adoption Model for the introduction of tracking Technical Debt in software organizations.

  • A Model for Reflective Participatory Design : The Role of Participation, Voice and Space
  • 2015
  • In: 21st Americas Conference on Information Systems. - : Americas Conference on Information Systems. - 9780996683104
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper aims to contribute to the participatory tradition in health informatics by presenting a model for reflective participatory design emerging from qualitative fieldwork in a participatory project aimed to improve the health and wellbeing of older people in the northern periphery regions of Europe, through new mobile services. The model brings together two established processes in novel ways: systems development and user participation. Within each process three concepts are presented to facilitate discussion and reflection at the concept level, the process level and the integrated process level.

  • The Importance of Form Field Validation : Lesson Learnt From a Feasibility Study of an M-Health Application in Malawi, Africa
  • 2016
  • In: Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems Proceedings. - : Association for Information Systems. - 9789860491029
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Measuring adherence to clinical guidelines using mobile health (mHealth) technologies when form field validation is enforced or turned on could potentially be viewed as skewing the dataset, leading to 100% adherence to the clinical rule base. In theory, healthcare providers should fully abide by clinical guidelines, whether in paper or digital format, to ensure that the patient receives appropriate care. However, what happens when mHealth form fieldvalidation is turned off? As part of a feasibility study in Malawi, Africa, we explored this phenomenon. Switching off validation on the mHealthartefact served its purpose within the context of a feasibility study where a parallel paper-based clinical assessment process remained in place. The design of this technical artefact with the turnkey validation feature afforded us the opportunity to turn validation on and off seamlessly. Ultimately, from an ethical, clinical and technical perspective the optimum approach is to ensurethat form field validation is switched on. With form field validation on adherence to the clinical guidelines is enforced which minimises incomplete assessment and the potential for suboptimal clinical decisions that could adversely affect patient care.

  • Critical Infrastructure Network DDoS Defense, via Cognitive Learning
  • 2017
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Some public and private services are called part of the Critical Infrastructure (CI), which are considered as the most important services to protect the functioning of a society and the economy.  Many CIs provide services via the Internet and thus cyber-attacks can be performed remotely.  It is now very simple and free to find and download software, which automates performing cyber-attacks.  A recent example is that two teenagers, with close to no security knowledge, created an on-line business. They would run cyber-attacks (online booter service called vDOS, as reported by Brian Krebs) for a small fee. They reportedly earned over 600,000 USD in a short period of time by conducting a large number of automated DDoS cyber-attacks. Then Krebs was retaliated against, and the highest DDoS attack bandwidth ever recorded, 620 Gbps, was launched against Krebs. In this paper we show how cognitive learning can be used to significantly mitigate any effects of DDoS network attacks, against the critical infrastructure.

  • The Future of Work for Quality Management – Challenges in the Digitalized Era
  • 2018
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Purpose Digitalization provides both challenges and opportunities for Quality Management (QM). The purpose of this paper is to identify challenges induced by digitalization on current QM practices, in order to uncover the potential of how QM may support digitalization in organizations. This issue is addressed through an analytical framework that stresses two dimensions: first exploration and exploitation of digitalized QM processes and second value creation, which is performed by the customer or in interaction facilitated by the provider. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on a cross-case study design with interview data collected from 33 quality management professionals in four large Swedish organizations. Findings Six different challenges and corresponding roles are proposed for QM: The gardener involved in the design of the many different currently utilized technologies; the bridge-builder - a role that connects implemented digitalized solutions that enable the movement from human-to-human to a human-to-digital interface; the assistant a contributor to better value in the customer sphere for already implemented digitalized solutions; the architect including planning, designs, and reviews together with many different stakeholders; the connector focusing on the continuous management of value-in-use and open up for  opportunities for continuous interaction and value-adding;  and explorer drawing attention towards the challenges of the existing power structures.  Originality/value This paper contributes with empirical evidence on challenges induced by digitalization, an area often discussed but not as often studied empirically.  Further, the study identifies challenges of digitalization affecting both exploitative and explorative practices throughout an organisations value-creation process.

  • Latent Groups in Online Communities: a Longitudinal Study in Wikipedia
  • 2018
  • In: Computer Supported Cooperative Work. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1573-7551 .- 0925-9724. ; 27:1, s. 77-106
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Research on online communities has shown that content production involves manifest groups and latent users. This paper conceptualizes a related but distinct phenomenon of latent groups. We ground this contribution in a longitudinal study on the Finnish Wikipedia (2007–2014). In the case of experts working on content within their area of expertise, individuals can constitute a group that maintains itself over time. In such a setting, it becomes viable to view the group as an acting unit instead of as individual nodes in a network. Such groups are able to sustain their activities even over periods of inactivity. Our theoretical contribution is the conceptualization of latent groups, which includes two conditions: 1) a group is capable of reforming after inactivity (i.e., dormant), and 2) a group is difficult to observe to an outsider (i.e., non-manifest).

  • Timing It Right : Patients' Online Access to Their Record Notes in Sweden
  • 2018
  • In: Building Continents of Knowledge in Oceans of Data. - : IOS Press. - 9781614998518 - 9781614998525 ; 247, s. 336-340
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In Sweden, and internationally, there is an ongoing debate about the effects of national implementations of Patient Accessible Electronic Health Records (PAEHRs). The purpose of this paper was to describe the current situation in Sweden and compare this with the expectations on reasonable waiting time for information access of users of the Swedish PAEHR. Data were collected from publicly available resources regarding current implementation in the 21 county councils, contrasted with patient experiences, gathered from a national online survey. The results indicate that patients have high expectations on immediate access to information, while this varies greatly in implementation across Sweden.
