  • Why do insiders trade? : Evidence based on unique data on Swedish insiders
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Accounting & Economics. - : Elsevier. - 0165-4101 .- 1879-1980. ; 48:1, s. 37-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we examine if corporate insiders have other motives for trading besides exploitation of private information. Our results show that insiders’ portfolio re- balancing objectives, tax considerations and behavioral biases play the most important role in their trading decisions. We also find that insiders who have allocated a great (small) proportion of their wealth to insider stock sell more (less) before bad news earnings disclosures. Finally, insider selling is informative for future returns among those insiders who have the greatest proportion of wealth allocated to insider stocks.

  • The destination-management organisation and the integrative destination-marketing process
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: The international journal of tourism research. - : Wiley. - 1099-2340 .- 1522-1970. ; 11:3, s. 283-296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A main function of destination-management organisations (DMOs) is that of being responsible for marketing their destinations. Many destinations involve stakeholders of different kinds. DMOs often have modest resources, and this creates a challenge: how should the DMO manage their marketing activities and achieve an outcome that benefits both the individual stakeholder and the destination? This study describes how DMOs can mobilise resources among the stakeholders and identifies the processes leading to integrated destination marketing. Basing our conclusions on a case study, we find that DMOs need to develop both pragmatic and moral legitimacy in order to develop integrated destination marketing.

  • Profitability Performance of Supermarkets : The effects of scale of operation, local market conditions, and conduct on the economic performance of supermarkets
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Ever since introduced and rolled out on the market during the 1950's and 1960's the supermarket format of grocery retail stores has played an important role in the grocery retail sector in Sweden, as well as in other countries. Although the sector in Sweden has evolved into a sector harbouring various store formats, the supermarket remains the major one - about half of the total volume of sales currently goes through supermarkets. Issues referring to the economic performance of supermarkets, and its antecedents, are thus of interest not only to retailers, but also to consumers as well as to society, overall. This study contributes to previous research by explicitly addressing bottom-line performance of supermarkets, and by bridging different fields of research. With the structure-conduct-performance (SCP) paradigm as theoretical underpinning, a cross-sectional design is developed for the study, comprising the economic performance of 168 supermarkets. By pooling data from various sources a unique database is developed, providing prerequisites for a comprehensive investigation into the effects of scale of operation, local market conditions, and supermarket conduct on various aspects of supermarket performance, all the way to bottom-line profitability performance. The results show that profitability performance of supermarkets is a consequence of a complex network of relationships between various aspects of economic performance, scale of operation, local market conditions and supermarket conduct. The profit margin, i.e. the span between gross margin and operating costs%, turns out as the major determinant of profitability performance. The profit margin, in turn, is found related to productivity, which in turn is found related to the volume of sales. Scale of operation and local market conditions are found working themselves into profitability performance, via conduct and various aspects of economic performance. However, neither scale nor favorable local market conditions turns out as the determinant of high rather than low profitability performance. Among the most as well as among least profitable, there are small and large supermarkets, facing local markets of favorable as well as unfavorable conditions. Rather, the dividing line between the low vs. highly profitable lies in the interplay between market conditions and conduct. Results from analyses of internal and external characteristics of the least and most profitable show important dissimilarities referring to their interplay with local market conditions. As such, the study provides important implications for retailers, from a strategical, tactical, as well as operational perspective.

  • Creation of Social Exlcusion in Policy and Practice
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Social exclusion of vulnerable children and families is a serious concern for policy-makers and practitioners alike. This doctoral thesis explores the social construction of exclusion in the UK. The thesis explores both historical and current processes of interactions between the socially excluded populations and policy agents. The empirical findings suggest that the neglect of the children's rights value perspective in social policy, and the resultant practice thereof, may be counter-productive to combating social exclusion."... institutions perpetuate exclusion unofficially. Public Sector workers who reflect the prejudices of their society may institutionalise some kinds of discrimination"The Department for International Development (DfID), UK"it just kills you in the end.. especially because you don't know if you are doing more good than harm.. the worst decision for me is when I see the child should be removed from home but I know if I do that, he will never get the kind of therapeutic attention that he needs.. instead he will probably be in multiple placements and at the end of the day, it boils down to the choice whether you let him be abused by hi natural family or let the Government do it.. the abuse does not stop with intervention.. it's just the System that does it then..""Practice is about watching your back not about what can I do for this child"Excerpts from interviews with child protection social workers, UK"Decisions were made for us, we were tossed here and there like a worthless piece of scum"Excerpts from interviews with care-leavers, UKMayeda Jamal is a Doctoral student at the Center for Media and Economic Psychology at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), Sweden, and a Visiting Researcher at the Department of Organizational Social Psychology at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), UK. • Gaining External Knowledge : boundaries in managers' knowledge relations
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Knowledge Management. - : Emerald Group. - 1367-3270 .- 1758-7484. ; 13:6, s. 448-463
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate interorganizational knowledge exchange from the perspective of the individual manager/professional. The paper aims to study the kinds of relationships managers/professionals in SMEs are involved in and the way in which they construct boundaries within and around these interorganizational relationships enabling and hindering knowledge acquisition.Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on 31 interviews with managers and professionals in seven SMEs. Interviews focused on the interorganizational relationships they viewed as important sources of knowledge for themselves and their organizations.Findings – The study shows that managers/professionals gain vital knowledge from far more interorganizational relationships than those formally designed for knowledge acquisition. The most important sources of knowledge were relationships with suppliers and customers. The study also identifies five boundary dimensions – interests, interpretive frameworks, trust, private/organizational and priority – which respondents use in constructing boundaries within and around the relationships. These boundary dimensions represent important conditions for knowledge acquisition through the relationship.Research limitations/implications – The five boundary dimensions are generated based on a sample of SMEs in Sweden. They must thus be regarded as provisional and need to be validated in further research including larger organizations in different cultural contexts. Future studies should also focus on the dynamics of the boundaries and their interrelations as relationships evolve.Originality/value – This paper adds to research on interorganizational knowledge acquisition by taking an individual level perspective and identifying boundary dimensions through which the relationships and their knowledge flows are shaped.

  • The burden of hospitalised fractures in Sweden.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Osteoporosis international. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0937-941X .- 1433-2965. ; 16:2, s. 222-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to characterise the hospital burden of fractures in the Swedish population by age and gender. The number of patients and number of fractures were documented according to site of fracture, age, sex and duration of hospital stay for the whole population of Sweden in 1996. Fractures were additionally classified as osteoporotic according to fracture site. In 1996 there were 54,000 admissions for fracture in men and women aged 50 years or more, accounting for 600,000 hospital-bed days. Hip fractures accounted for 63% of admissions for fracture in men and 72% in women, for 69% and 73% of hospital-bed days, respectively. Fractures considered to be osteoporotic accounted for 84% of all hospital-bed days due to fracture in men, and 93% in women. More hospital-bed days were due to osteoporotic fracture than to breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. The number of hospital-bed days due to osteoporotic fracture was between the amount due to ischaemic heart disease and the amount due to stroke.

  • Adjustment in property space markets : Taking long-term leases and transaction costs seriously
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Real estate economics (Print). - : Wiley. - 1080-8620 .- 1540-6229. ; 36:1, s. 81-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Markets for property space adjust only gradually because tenants and landlords are constrained by long-term leases and transaction and information costs. Not only do rents adjust slowly, but space occupancy, which depends on historical rents, often differs from demand at current rent. This creates "hidden vacancies," vacancies that will develop in the future if market rent and the space demand driver are unchanged. That is, if current rent is greater/lesser than average rent, then hidden vacancies are positive/negative. Moreover, because of hidden vacancies, open vacancies and rent are not mirror images of each other. Thus it is necessary to estimate both rental and vacancy rate adjustment processes. We do this using annual data for Stockholm offices during the 1977-2002 period and simulate the response of rent and vacancies (open and hidden) to an employment shock.

  • The oil resources of Timor-Leste : curse or blessing?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: The Pacific Review. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0951-2748 .- 1470-1332. ; 21:1, s. 67-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Timor-Leste is among the youngest nations in the world. It began its independence under difficult circumstances: poverty is widespread, education is poor, the industrial sector is non-existent, and political turbulence is on the rise. On the positive side, future oil revenues are predicted to be substantial, which could potentially be a great help in Timor-Leste's struggle for development. This paper examines critically the possibility for Timor-Leste to use oil revenues to achieve economic development. It describes how difficult it is to estimate the future revenues because of volatile prices, territorial disputes, and insufficient seismological mapping. It continues with a discussion of the 'resource curse' - the difficulty of combining natural resources with economic development. Moreover, the particular challenges for Timor-Leste's development are dealt with at some length, as are possible ways to avoid the resource curse.
