- Assessments and evaluations of incubators has been a topic of discussion for as long as incubators have been in existence due to the fact that there has not been an agreement on how to determine good performance. This paper demonstrates the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) when studying performance of incubators. More specifically, it does so within the four dimensions of cooperation with universities, business networks, external funding and competence development on a sample of 16 Swedish incubators. We show that DEA enables us to measure non-numerical dimensions, and to simultaneously take into account the efforts made by both the incubator and the outcomes. Moreover, DEA provides benchmarks and, based on a model that divides the incubators into four different groups, illustrates the difference between the benchmark and the incubators' current situation.

- We examine the effects of foreign entry on productive efficiency during the Polish investment liberalisation. The performance of foreign acquisitions is compared to foreign firms entering the market through greenfield entry, as well as domestic acquisitions of privatised firms, domestic greenfields and remaining state-owned (non-privatised) firms during the period 19952000. We find that foreign privatised firms have realised larger productivity gains than all types of domestic firms and that this is not due to higher price-cost margins, which is consistent with the idea that foreign firms bring in firm-specific knowledge. Foreign greenfields have the highest average labour productivity, while foreign privatisations show the largest productivity increase.

- Using panel data derived from recent financial statements, we examine the relationship between changing creditor protection and leverage (and debt maturity) in a number of emerging market countries located in Central and Eastern Europe. We examine unlisted firms, which are more likely than listed companies to face credit constraints. Our main hypothesis is whether unlisted firms change their leverage and debt maturity as creditor rights increase. We confirm this to be the case at both the country- and firm-level; our findings are robust to alternative econometric specifications and inclusion of countrylevel and firm-level controls. We also find that legal origin is related to the level of debt and its maturity.

- One common solution to resolve poverty is providing microfinance to the poor. Microfinance has been claimed to positively impact the livelihoods of the poor through accumulation of social, human, financial, natural, and physical assets. This paper empirically examines if microfinance contributes to the reduction of poverty in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. Analysing household survey data collected in 2006, from Hoa An commune in the Mekong Delta area, it investigates if microfinance leads to accumulation of assets. It further investigates how poor women are enabled to adopt livelihood strategies that lead to poverty reduction. Information is collected by implementing a household survey. This is further supplemented with qualitative information from Participatory Rural Appraisal, interviews with key informants and focus group discussions with members and non-members of the microfinance programs in the area. The main findings suggest that the process of accumulation of assets, leads to creation of livelihoods that result in increased household income and poverty reduction.

- This article surveys, discusses and classifies methods for ex-post evaluation of the efficiency of competition authorities: court appeals, peer reviews, case studies, event studies, (authorities’ own) bottom-up calculations of consumer gains, deadweight-loss estimates, cross-country panel studies etc. Based on empirical estimates from other types of studies and on a simple oligopoly model, one conclusion is that many bottom-up calculations are based on exaggerated estimates of gains from cartel enforcement, relative to those from merger enforcement. Another conclusion is that authorities’ ex-post self evaluations are of limited value, relative to external evaluations.

- A well-functioning economy requires a well-functioning bankruptcy system. However, our knowledge of insolvency and bankruptcy is remarkably limited. This anthology brings together new international research from a wide range of academic disciplines – law, business administration, economics, history and economic history – and there is a correspondingly broad range of themes in the volume.One theme running through the book involves institutional change in the systems that have been created to deal with insolvency. How have they affected creditors and debtors? How have they affected the economy? And how have older regulations been adapted to the demands of new economic systems and organizational innovations?Another theme involves how lawmakers and people in general have explained the causes of insolvency and how they have viewed insolvents. In classical antiquity, insolvency was regarded as equal to theft from the creditor. That remained the dominant view for many centuries, and insolvents were subjected to harsh treatment. Beginning in the 19th century, there has been a process of redefinition, and bankruptcies are no longer regarded as a consequence of moral shortcomings but simply as economic failures.
